    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

I was wondering if you had, off the top of your head, any one-armed Herdazian jokes.

    Brandon Sanderson

(laughs) Only the obvious one. How do you get a one-armed Herdazian out of a tree? You wave.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

I do have to know—how many cousins?

    Brandon Sanderson

It depends on what your definition of cousin is. By Lopen's definition, basically all of the people—there are a lot of cousins. He's counting like fifth cousins, like, dating his sister or his mom's sister—that's a cousin.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

Is Lopen still going to have one-arm jokes? That's my big concern.

    Brandon Sanderson

He's always going to have one-arm jokes. He's probably going to have to come up with some two-arm jokes.

    Interview: Aug 13th, 2014

    Noah Hill (Goodreads)

Is there any chance we will have a deeper backstory for Bridge 4 members? Maybe an anthology or something with short stories that detail backstory for Rock, Lopen, etc? That would be amazing!

    Brandon Sanderson

I do intend to dig into some of them a little. (Rock, for example, is currently plotted to have a viewpoint sequence in a later book.)

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Question

In regards to the one-armed Lopen - which arm is missing?

    Brandon Sanderson

I have always imagined it as his left, but I don't know if I ever said or canonized it.

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Question (Paraphrased)

[Comments about how awesome Lopen is.]

    Brandon Sanderson

Lopen is a very special dude. I planned, and I don't know if I'll get to it, but I planned an in-between books short story called King Lopen the First, King of Alethkar. And I am hoping I'll get a chance to write that and stick it somewhere for you guys. Because if you see in the end, he is claiming he was king for a while. You will find out why.

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Question

Why can Stormlight heal Lopen's arm, but can't heal Kaladin's scars?

    Brandon Sanderson

Because a lot of the healing in the cosmere works on principles of expectation and how you envision yourself.

    Question

So Kaladin has accepted the scars.

    Brandon Sanderson

And Lopen never accepted the one arm. It's one of these ties when I built the magic systems that I wanted certain threads to run through them, so when I eventually have them being used in the same books, there will be consistency among them, so they won't feel like everything's just thrown together. So, the intention and expectation, for instance, in Warbreaker. What you want to have happen, the expectation, the way you are thinking about things, all that influences what actually happens. Very important for most of the cosmere magics.

    Interview: Feb 24th, 2016

    Cadmium

Who cut Lopen’s food for him while he was one-handed?

    Brandon Sanderson

(Laughs) Well, I’d have to say he doesn’t need anyone to cut his food for him, he’d just kind of grr, arrgh (pantomimes, stabbing something on table with fork and ripping into it with teeth) Because he’s The Lopen right, and he can take care of his food himself. Great question. Very unique.

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2015

    Question

I've been listening to the audiobooks of Stormlight. There are some really great character voices. Have you told him how to do the characters?

    Brandon Sanderson

I have not told him how to do characters. I leave that to him. I give him pronunciations.

    Question

So the Australian Lopen is all him.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, the Australian is all him. Which is weird, because they're, they're based off of Hispanic cultures, so, hearing the Australian - but at the same time, they're not Hispanic, because there are no Hispanics on Roshar, so an Australian's probably just as accurate as anything else. But yes, I intended the Herdazians to have a Hispanic flair to them.

    Interview: Nov 22nd, 2016

    BYU Bookstore (Paraphrased)

    Question

    unknown

    Brandon Sanderson

Lopen was actually considered to be the king of Alethkar for about 15 minutes. When his family was hiding Elhokar, his family did not want to lie about harboring the king, so they convinced Elhokar to renounce his kingship for about 15 minutes until the search ended. During that time, Lopen was considered to be the king.
