    Interview: Jul 19th, 2005

    Week 5 Question

Did the Dark One or Ishamael, either one, have a say in the placement of any or all of the other Chosen once they were released, or did they all just carve out power bases of their own choosing?

    Robert Jordan

They carved out power bases of their own choosing based on various criteria, one of which I will reveal. (Others are definitely RAFO!) For the most part, Ishamael excepted, they set out to create worldly power for themselves using the methods they favored in the Age of Legends. That is, Moghedien worked from the shadows using subversion, Sammael, Be'lal and Rahvin attempted to seize control of national governments and so on. The theory behind this was that once the Dark One broke free, those with the largest worldly power bases would be rewarded most.

    Interview: Oct 25th, 1994

    Question

Can the Power really be used to make you different? [This arose as part of a discussion of Illusion ("Mirror of Mists" is an old name for the same thing).]

    Robert Jordan

Illusion is illusion. Doesn't fool the sense of touch, so you have to be really subtle (such as Moghedien's disguise) to avoid detection.

    Question

So Sammael couldn't make himself taller?

    Robert Jordan

He could make himself look taller, but he's not interested in looking taller. He wants to be taller. Besides, any sufficiently experienced man would be able to tell that it was illusion.

    Question

So the Power really isn't capable of genetic reconstruction? (Like, for example, making you taller.)

    Robert Jordan

Maybe, in the Age of Legends, someone might have been able to pull it off, if they were really skilled. Might have.

    Question

Like Aginor? He seemed to be the expert among the Forsaken on that.

    Robert Jordan

Aginor was d**n good, but he wasn't that good.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Brandon Sanderson (8 April 2011)

You know, Nynaeve, it would have been 'wrong' and all, but I'd totally have forgiven you if you'd just offed Moghedien in the palace.

    REDHAIRBEAST

What about Traveling? Cuendillar? And all the rest?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

I'm not following you. What are you asking about?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Oh, you mean "If Moghedien died, we wouldn't have these things." True, true.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

But at the same time...they keep just letting the Forsaken get away. Ah, well.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Now I'm imagining Nynaeve towing Moghedien out with her and bringing her to the White Tower for justice—only to find Elaida in charge...

    HERIDFAN

How did Moghedien know about sad bracelets [Domination Band]? Semirhage said in The Gathering Storm that they were made after the Forsaken were imprisoned.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

I believe Moghedien said she'd been doing some research about the Breaking and had learned about them.

    SLEEPINGHOUR

There's been some debate about Moghedien's strength in the Power since she and Nynaeve were equal in The Shadow Rising, but...

    SLEEPINGHOUR

...Nynaeve hadn't reached full strength as late as The Path of Daggers. Is Moghedien the weakest of the Forsaken?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Honestly? I'd have to look it up. I don't know off-hand how Cyndane fits into things now. Still powerful, but not as powerful.

    TEREZ

Cyndane is still the strongest female; that was made clear in Graendal's POV in The Path of Daggers. Just weaker than Lanfear.

    SLEEPINGHOUR (9 APRIL)

Yeah, I was mostly just curious about the considerable gap between Moghedien and the strongest female Forsaken.

    SLEEPINGHOUR

There was a lot of debate on RAFO.com on whether Elayne and Egwene are close to Moghedien since she's so weak.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Brandon Sanderson (8 April 2011)

This might be old news, but people keep asking me about it. Yes there ARE Dreamers among the Forsaken. Male and female.

    AUSTIN MOORE

One male AND one female Forsaken are Dreamers?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

There are multiple Dreamers. At least one male and at least one female.

    Footnote

This might have been in response to the previous conversation about Moghedien. She and Lanfear are the top candidates for the female Dreamers, and Moridin is the obvious choice for the men, since skill in Tel'aran'rhiod and skill in invading others' dreams seem to be concurrent with the Talent of prophetic dreams. See here for more details.

    Interview: Jun 16th, 1995

    Robert Jordan

When Moghedien ripped out Birgitte from Tel'aran'rhiod she "short-circuited" the Pattern, by bringing in an adult "in the flesh" instead of letting Birgitte join Gaidal Cain the "normal" way. He said also that Gaidal Cain may not have any role to play in Tarman Gai'don. ["may"—consider that—my note]

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

Ask how it was that Moghedien got to Shayol Ghul instantly...was it the Dark One using his twisty powers or was it a function of being all a dream?

    Robert Jordan

It was a dream. Moghedien, by the way, used to be an investments councilor until the FTC got on her case.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

Can you use the True Power in the stedding?

    Robert Jordan

Ye....er...RAFO. You must be a stone cold fanatic to want to use the True Power. Moghedien is terrified of it. Avoids it.

    Footnote

In 2005 he said no, and this is backed up by a report from Thus Spake.

    Interview: Jan 14th, 1997

    Thomas Howard

Why couldn't Moghedien escape the leash with the True Power?

I'm just going to quote the whole response to this:

    Robert Jordan

"The a'dam would perceive any [emphasis mine] power use and treat it accordingly."

    THOMAS HOWARD

I don't know about you, but this seems to support the idea that one must be able to channel the One Power in order to use the True Power.

    Footnote

In case it isn't obvious, the Domination Band is not just a 'male a'dam'—there are several fundamental differences that we already knew about before The Gathering Storm.

    Interview: Jan 14th, 1997

    Thomas Howard

What the hell is up with balefire (in regards to Nynaeve and the boat)?

The main issue with this was whether or not balefire burned inanimate objects back through time in addition to living creatures.

    Robert Jordan

According to Mr. Jordan, yes it does.

    Footnote

Moghedien attempted to balefire Nynaeve when she was in a boat in Ebou Dar in A Crown of Swords Chapter 31. And Brandon has confirmed that even inanimate objects have threads in the Pattern.

    Interview: Oct 24th, 1998

    Chris Mullins

I asked RJ, at the Palo Alto signing, if Moghedien was raped by Shadar Haran in A Crown of Swords.

    Robert Jordan

His reply was, "Yes. Amongst other things."

    Interview: Oct 24th, 1998

    Drew Gillmore

Chris used his moment with the Creator to open himself up to a huge RAFO, but his question was answered. Chris asked if Moghedien had been raped by Shaidar Haran.

    Robert Jordan

The answer was "Yes, among other things."...

...Another interesting point that may just be my interpretation of things, is that someone asked if Lanfear had been raped as well, right on top of the Moghedien question, and he answered right away with a "No". It could be any number of explanations, but it seemed to me that it was a given that Cyndane was Lanfear from the context of the conversation.

Like I said, just my interpretation.

Someone else who was paying more attention could fill in here.

Is there any way to escape a Mindtrap other than death?

    Robert Jordan

To be released, you can be released from it.

    Interview: Dec 9th, 2002

    Dragonmount

What is your reaction to Robert telling people that all of the major female characters are partially based off of you? Doesn't that worry you a bit?

    Harriet McDougal Rigney

No, it doesn't worry me. I am immensely flattered by it. And a bit amused. The cross wife who says, "you forgot to take the garbage out again": Is this REALLY Moghedien? Goodness!

    Interview: Jan 15th, 2003

    Bradley Staples

Can you explain a bit about the properties of the World of Dreams? Such as when Nynaeve forced Moghedien to drink forkroot tea, which caused the Forsaken to fall asleep. But within that same book, the Wise Ones tell Egwene that drinking tea will in Tel'aran'rhiod will cause no effects upon the body.

    Robert Jordan

It's a strong matter of belief. If you believe something like that will happen to you, then it can and does.

    Bradley Staples

[I wonder why Moghedien believed that though, if she one of the best of the (Forsaken) in Tel'aran'rhiod]

    Question

Also, what about wounds and pain? Causing pains/wounds though an intermediate source—such as stabbing one with a dagger made in Tel'aran'rhiod—causes lasting pain. Yet if one were to simply cause the other to feel that pain directly, it fades upon reaching the waking world.

    Robert Jordan

No it doesn't. If you feel pain in the World of Dreams, in Tel'aran'rhiod, then you have that pain in the waking world. Tel'aran'rhiod IS real in that respect.

    Bradley Staples

[More along the same, I forget wording. But I wonder why pain would stay, if Egwene's healing didn't? Belief again?]

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2005

    Isabel

Will Nynaeve be able to make cuendillar?

    Robert Jordan

I doubt it, it is as much talent as it is strength. And I don't think she has that talent.

    Isabel

    And can men make cuendillar?

    Robert Jordan

Yes. But they wont use the same weaves the women use, so they will have to figure out how to do it themselves unless they can get it from one of the male Forsaken, if he happens to know it. It is an oddity that Moghedien even knew how to do this, it's just her fascination with things that are valuable.

    Interview: Oct 11th, 2005

    NaClH2O

When I finally got up to the desk I asked, "After Moghedien was mindtrapped, Moridin said that had she not managed to do some good by accident, she would have been dead. What good was Moridin referring to?"

    Robert Jordan

His answer, "I RAFO'd that on the blog".

    NaClH2O

So the three direct questions I asked him all got RAFO'd.

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2009

    TheWindRose

Are there any Forsaken around Elayne?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon paused for a moment, then said: So many people are trying to figure out where Demandred is, I am not sure I can answer that.

    Samadai

Forkroot and I both said no, not Demandred. We were talking Cyndane or Moghedien. Then we said, for example, some postulate that Sylvase is Cyndane.

    Brandon Sanderson

He said, "No, Sylvase is not a Forsaken and was never intended to be."

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2009

    SteelBlaidd

Did Egwene squeeze Moghedien for information on the Dream World?

    Brandon Sanderson

That was our First MAFO (Maria And Find Out).

He also said that Egwene is a powerful Dreamer and it seems unlikely that she didn't squeeze her for the information.

    MARIA SIMONS (VIA LUCKERS)

This one is basic enough that I feel pretty confident that Egwene would have certainly asked Moghedien about Tel'aran'rhiod. Egwene threatened to execute Moghedien if she lied; I would think that with the knowledge that Egwene gained from the Aiel Wise Ones she might use that as the occasional test, and see where it went. I think that Egwene asked Moghedien about pretty much anything that popped in her head.

    FOOTNOTE—LUCKERS

Maria claims the right to amend this later.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2010

    Ted Herman

Can a Dreamer access Tel'aran'rhiod if trapped by an a'dam?

    Brandon Sanderson

At first, Brandon said yes, but then he qualified that with 90% chance of yes.

    Footnote

In 2013, Maria stated that there was nothing in the notes on this, but she believes one cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while collared.

    Interview: Apr 17th, 2011

    Terez (herid)

When you said some Forsaken are Dreamers, you meant they have prophetic dreams, right? Or are they just Dreamwalkers?

    Brandon Sanderson

I did mean Dreamers. People have been trying to pin me down on that one.

    Terez

Yeah, everybody has been like convinced that you were just confused...

    Brandon Sanderson

...that I was just confused. No. I meant Dreamers. I DID INDEED MEAN DREAMERS.

    Terez

I know you did, but...just verifying.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. And I’m like 95% on that one. We’ll put an asterisk on it. I actually sent Maria deeper into the notes, but I know at least one is, and I’m pretty sure one of each gender is.

    Footnote

The most likely candidates seem to be Moridin, Cyndane, and Moghedien, who are undeniably the most skilled at getting into people's dreams and using Tel'aran'rhiod. These talents seem to go together, and all three of them are still alive as of Towers of Midnight (out of five remaining Forsaken).

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

How did Egwene easily break free from the a'dam placed upon her in Tel'aran'rhiod by Mesaana when the a'dam placed upon Moghedien (a mistress of Tel'aran'rhiod) was so effective?

    Brandon Sanderson

This got Brandon thinking hard but he RAFO'd it in the end but he did say 'are you a Theorylander?' which did make us laugh. :)

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

In Towers of Midnight in Egwene’s confrontation with Mesaana, how was Egwene able to override the a’dam when Moghedien had so spectacularly failed to do so earlier?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon accused me of being a Theorylander then thought for a bit. He explained that, while the answer might not give anything away, he was loath to go into detail in case it could be used to work out other things yet to come. So, regretfully, he gave it a RAFO.

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Luckers

Can someone who is leashed by an a'dam touch Tel'aran'rhiod?

    Brandon Sanderson

*blinks at me* Umm. That's a really good question.

    Luckers

I ask, because it's odd that Moghedien never tried to use the dream to escape, or to capture someone in Salidar and compel her to free Moghedien in the waking world, or anything like that.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, that's a good question. I'd guess no, but you can MAFO that.

    Maria Simons

I believe that you cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while leashed, but I can't find anything in the notes that states so outright.

    Footnote

When Brandon was first asked this question in 2010, he said "90% yes". In 2013 (after Luckers' 2012 interview), he said it was "not outside the realm of possibility". Maria answered the question later in 2013.

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Luckers

Are the Tel'aran'rhiod precepts enforced, and did breaking them expose Birgitte to what Moghedien did?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, not as far as I know, and I’m pretty solid on... I went through the notes on Tel'aran'rhiod heavily in the course of my work on the Wheel, so yeah.

    Robert Jordan

(from Drew Gillmore's report): Chris used his moment with the Creator to open himself up to a huge RAFO, but his question was answered. Chris asked if Moghedian had been raped by Shaidar Haran. The answer was "Yes, among other things."

    Mike Steeves

Praise be to Jordan, allowing us to close out that question.

He also mentioned that Myrddraal aren't sterile, but that they would make a woman sterile.

    Interview: Feb 9th, 2013

    KiManiak

While collared, would Moghedien be able to use her dreamwalking abilities to compel a sul'dam or someone else to release her from the collar?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon answered (paraphrasing again) that that is not outside the realm of possibility.

    Footnote

In 2013, Maria stated that there was nothing in the notes on this, but she believes one cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while collared.

    Interview: Apr 20th, 2013

    Terez

So how is it that Egwene was able to override the a'dam in the dream world when Moghedien couldn't? Was she just not as good as she thought she was?

    Maria Simons

Yeah, pretty much. She thought she knew everything, but you know, when Perrin went in and was, "It's just a weave..." it kind of changed the parameters.
