    Interview: Oct 18th, 1994

    Question

When Morgase thought "two beautiful children", was she thinking of Gawyn and Elayne or Gawyn and Galad?

    Robert Jordan

    Read the book.

    Interview: Oct 19th, 1994

    Compuserve Chat (Verbatim)

    Ben & Chris

There is a big influence (already mentioned) from wide ranging source materials. This is a great deal of fun, tracking down all of the various sources whilst reading. Is there a reason that the Arthur and other Avalon legends are referred to so much. Gawyn, Morgase, et al.?

    Robert Jordan

They really aren't referred to any more than many other legends and myths, but they're simply more recognizable to most Americans.

    Footnote

RJ was probably hinting that the Americans are generally the least 'cultured' and the least likely to recognize the foreign legends he drew from, Norse and Slavic mythology (very prominent), etc. The Arthur legends are probably better-known elsewhere (i.e. Britain, France).

    Interview: Oct 25th, 1994

    Question

    What about Gawyn?

    Robert Jordan

Well, all the information he can find indicates that his mother's dead. (First the rumor, then it apparently got confirmed when he reached Cairhien.) Rand probably killed her. His sister is missing, maybe dead. Rand's involved again. He released the woman responsible for finding Rand because he loved Egwene. Egwene is tied up with Rand, who killed his mother and is probably responsible for his sister's disappearance. Why do you think he's under any stress?

    Tony Zbaraschuk

[Even Rand thinks that Morgase is dead.]

    Interview: Aug 30th, 1999

    Sastan

In Lord of Chaos when Elenia told Rand that Morgase and Tigraine weren't cousins, Rand felt really relieved. Was it because he thought there was something wrong having a relationship with his second cousin?

    Robert Jordan

Well he's not sure exactly how close his relationship to Elayne might be, how close his blood relationship might be. That's what he wanted to find out. He's in love with her and he'd really like to get it on with her but on the other end, he thinks he's gotta stay away from her to keep her safe. And on top of that, if she comes to stay, and god he might be related to her, and you know, how close is he? What is the relationship? He doesn't know. For all he knows there might be some way that he's as good as her brother. He's gotta find out. But he's gotta find out without letting anybody know why he wants to find out or even really that he is trying to find out.

    Sastan

But if he finds, because Galad is his half brother and also Elayne's half brother, won't he find anything wrong with that?

    Robert Jordan

No. The way the mother-father relationship works is different. He has a blood relationship to Galad. He has no blood relationship to Elayne. None. At least not close enough to be counted by anybody except by how many lines of connection you have to the family of Andor.

    Sastan

The reason that Morgase got her throne was because she was the most closely related to Tigraine.

    Robert Jordan

That's part of it. You gotta be closely related to put in a claim. After that it becomes political. In a way almost like... More like a republic than a democracy in that the electorate is limited. And in this case, the electorate is limited to the nobles. How many nobles can you get to support you. And she was able to get enough, finally, after something very close to a civil war to gain the throne.

    Footnote

Sastan claimed this question in his own report.

    Interview: Aug 30th, 1999

    Sastan

I managed to ask him about the issue of Rand and Elayne, asking why Rand felt so relieved when he was told he was not closely related to Elayne.

    Robert Jordan

RJ explained along the lines of how this was a quest that and alone could solve, that he needed to find out without anyone else knowing about it. He did not, however, say that it was settled that Tigraine and Morgase are not cousins. Even when I asked him a second time, he refused to say. Yet he did say, when I asked, that he did not consider Rand and Elayne's relationship through Galad to be of importance, or that they were related by blood. I agreed with the second part.

    Interview: Oct 4th, 2005

    Robert Jordan

For Gyrehead, Foretelling is not related to strength. The weakest possible channeler could Foretell as strongly as Elaida or Nicola, or perhaps even more so, depending entirely on the strength of his or her Talent for Foretelling.

The three Red Sitters were sent into exile in 985 NE under Marith Jaen.

Yes, Morgase has slowed, and that is exactly why there is so much emphasis on her looking only ten years older than Perrin when she has children the ages of Elayne and Gawyn.

Regarding the percentage of women who could test for the shawl, it would be 62.5% of the bellcurve. I'll leave the maths to you for an idle moment. The question doesn't really apply to men, since the Black Tower accepts anyone who can learn to channel, but if the White Tower limits were applied, it would be roughly 65.4% of the bellcurve. Although, considering the effectiveness question, they should probably set it at the same 62.5%. Again, the maths are all yours. Regarding the levels of male strength, while the weakest man and the weakest woman would be roughly equivalent, you might say that there are several levels of male strength on top of the female levels. Remember to integrate this with what I've said elsewhere about effectiveness, though.

    Interview: Oct 27th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson

He also said that the series' ending puts certain threads in perspective. For example, Morgase, my least favorite character, apparently turns out to be less annoying than she appears. Also, fans will better be able to understand the importance of some of the lesser-liked books, like Crossroads of Twilight.

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2009

    Samadai

RobMRobM had me ask three questions. Will we find out where Morgase learned the Two Rivers speech? Will Tam end up with a wife? Was Kari al'Thor related to Morgase?

    Brandon Sanderson

RobM you get the triple RAFO award.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2011

    RobMRobM

Will we find out in A Memory of Light just how Morgase became familiar in her youth with Two Rivers speech patterns?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, we won't. It would have been part of a book that will most likely not be written, so we will probably get to find out in the Encyclopedia.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Terez

At this point, Brandon started signing my books. I recorded the conversation while he was doing it, so from here on out it's transcribed. I always ask for something unique, but this time around bossman insisted the HCFFs should ask for a unique personalization—probably because Brandalization kind of decreases the value of signed books!—so Brandon took it as a matter of course. I asked for Zombie's infamous love pentagram.

    (start transcript)

....you have to draw a pentagram....and then, you know, you can start with Moiraine on one tip, and then just follow it around, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

Uh-huh. Okay, yeah, that is...I do remember that. Okay. So.... (draws two lines) Can I even draw a pentagram?

    Terez

Now, they go up to the middle...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, now they go up like this...

    Terez

    ...right...

    Brandon Sanderson

    ...like that, and then across.

    Terez

    (laughs) Yes. It's perfect.

    Brandon Sanderson

    And then Thom...

    Terez

No, nonononono! Because, like, Moiraine connects to Thom here...

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, it goes like that! I see what it is...

    Terez

    Right, right. Yeah.

    Brandon Sanderson

    I see.

    Terez

    And then Thom connects to...

    Brandon Sanderson

    ...to Morgase.

    Terez

    Right.

    Jennifer Liang

Is this like the hook-up quadrilateral?

    Terez

    It's a love pentagram. (laughs)

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, and then Morgase is not going to be Tallanvor....

    Terez

    Gareth...

    Brandon Sanderson

Morgase is going to be Gareth Bryne, and then Bryne is going to be Siuan....

    Terez

    And then...

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, Siuan and Moiraine, pillow-friends! Right, yeah....

    Terez

...and then Siuan comes back to Moiraine! Yeah!

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yeah, yeah, okay.

    Terez

    It works perfectly.

    Jennifer Liang

Yeah, the Wheel of Time is basically one big hook-up chain. (laughter)

    Terez

Well, I thought this was special, cause it's like...it's not a love triangle; it's a love pentagram.

    Jennifer Liang

    Yep.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, okay. Again, sorry for my handwriting.

    Terez

And then you have to draw a heart.

    Brandon Sanderson

    (draws heart and sparklies)

    Terez

(laughs) That's great. Now for the questions!

    Brandon Sanderson

    Alright, now for the questions.

    Terez

    Alright.

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2013

    Reddit AMA 2013 (Verbatim)

    stagfury ()

I just finished A Memory of Light about a week ago, I've been wondering...whatever happened to Morgase? She was never mentioned in the prologue when Talmanes was fighting through Caemlyn, nor was she around when Elayne found out what happened to Caemlyn. Did she just die during the initial strike by the Darkfriends/Black Ajah?

    Brandon Sanderson

She lives. She spend some time helping the refugees; I may have mentioned it, or I may have forgotten. One challenge with this last book was finding a place for so many characters. Some, like Morgase, I decided to deal with in previous volumes and leave only brief mentions in the final book.
