    Interview: Dec, 2010

    T.t

    1. Are Kaladin's parents still alive, and if so, are they actually mad at him?

    2. Do dead parshmen turn into Chasmfieds?

    3. What is the dark-glowing sphere?

    4. What did Szeth do to become a Truthless, and is there anything else involved in being a Truthless that we haven't seen?"

    Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads)

    1. Yes, they are still alive. RAFO.

    2. No.

    3. Major big RAFO.

    4. Szeth was perceived as betraying his people in a fundamental way, and you will learn more about that when his book comes along.

    Interview: Sep 22nd, 2012

    Zas

That's it. Oh wait, we can do this ridiculous one. There's this crazy off the wall theory that Parshendi are dead people brought back to life.

    Brandon Sanderson

Interesting. There will be Parshendi viewpoints in the second book, and you will be able to see a lot more of that.

    Question

Are Parshendi like a hive mind sort of culture?

    Brandon Sanderson

They are not a hive mind. I thought people might assume that.

    Question

But because of the singing, it seems like...

    Brandon Sanderson

There is a connection. It's more Union than Hivemind. You know about Jung?

    Question

    Not particularly.

    Brandon Sanderson

Jung's philosophy was that all people are connected.

    Question

    Oh, like the dream psychologist?

    Brandon Sanderson

I believe that collective unconscious was one of his terms. So it's not hive mind, but there is—there's something the Parshendi can tap into.

    Question

    With the singing?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, like with the singing, where one sings over here, and one sings over there, they are actually in beat with one another even if they start at different times. So there is something there, a connection.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    E. Hyde

I asked if assassination is common among the Parshendi, since they have a tradition of what assassins are supposed to wear.

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon said (and I'm paraphrasing) that the Parshendi are a lot more unified than they used to be, and back when they existed as a lot of separate tribes (he didn't say how long ago this was), raids and assassinations were a fairly regular thing.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Question

In The Way of Kings, is Assassination a common thing in the Parshendi culture, because it seems odd that they would have a specific custom for what assassins wear?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is something that happened quite a bit more in the past than it does now. But yes, you will find out much more about them. They are now more unified, but they used to be a bunch of different tribes, and they would send assassins into each other's camps.

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2013

    Reddit AMA 2013 (Verbatim)

    Nepene ()

You've mentioned several philosophical concepts used in the writing of your books, like Jung's collective unconsciousness, Plato's cave. Could you expand a bit on your use of those in your books, and whether you think it is necessary to use philosophy to make a good fantasy world?

    Brandon Sanderson

I don't think it's necessary at all. The writer's own fascinations—whatever they are—can add to the writing experience. But yes, some philosophical ideas worked into my fiction. Plato's theory of the forms has always fascinated, and so the idea of a physical/cognitive/spiritual realm is certainly a product of this. Human perception of ideals has a lot to do with the cognitive realm, and a true ideal has a lot to do with the spiritual realm.

As for more examples, they're spread through my fiction. Spinoza is in there a lot, and Jung has a lot to do with the idea of spiritual connectivity (and how the Parshendi can all sing the same songs.)

    Nepene

Not completely sure where Spinoza comes in. I guess the shards are part of the natural world and have no personality without a human wielder.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes on Spinoza there, and also the idea of God being in everything, and everything of one substance. Unifying laws. Those sorts of things. (Less his determinism, though.)

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2013

    Reddit AMA 2013 (Verbatim)

    samwisevimes ()

I'm rereading Way of Kings and I had a question about the Parshendi, do they have a negotiating form? I ask because it seems that they must have shifted forms before/just after the betrayal and are now stuck in war form, but if they had the ability to negotiate before why not now?

    Brandon Sanderson

More of this will be answered in book two. They aren't 'stuck' in warform, but do have limited options.

    Yados

Between the Parshendi and the Alethi harvesting gem-hearts, how long has it been since a Chasmfiend got to finish pupating?

    Brandon Sanderson

Aha. I wondered if someone would ask that. Much like whaling in our own world, there is a big ecological price building for what is going on here. You are right to worry about this.

    JamesW

Are there non-human races on Roshar, or non-humanoid races that are sentient?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Parshendi are not human, but you probably already knew that. The two races of Aimians are not human either. There are many races of sentient spren. From there, it depends if you call something like Ryshadium sentient or not.

So, do the Parshendi need a highstorm to change forms?

    Brandon Sanderson

They do, good guess! Excellent question.

    QUESTION

    Do they eat?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

    Do they eat? Yes.

    QUESTION

So, they eat like grains and stuff like that?

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2012

    Question

Is the city that the Parshendi are in Urithiru?

    Brandon Sanderson

In the Way of Kings, Jasnah tells Shallan that Urithiru is not on the Shattered Plains. So either Jasnah is incorrect or that is not Urithiru.

    QUESTION

In other words, you’re not going to tell me?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

I’m just clarifying for you so that you have all the information you need in order to make judgements and ask questions.

    Footnote

    Brandon pronounced Urithiru like "You-rith-ir-oo".

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

If Taravangian made the Diagram, and telling the future is of the Voidbringers, is that a bad sign?

    Brandon Sanderson

It depends on if you're speaking culturally or actually magically.

    Question

    Magically, I guess.

    Brandon Sanderson

Because he would claim to you that he did it all with strength of mind and no magical influence other than enhanced mind. That's what he would tell you. And so in that case it would not be—culturally they'd look very weirdly at it, but spiritually he would say it's not of the Voidbringers.

    Question

    Right. He would say that.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Uh-huh.

    Question

    Brandon Sanderson

Historically, the Parshendi were not made Knights Radiant, or the parshmen weren't.

    Question

    Can they become squires maybe?

    Brandon Sanderson

Historically they did not, but it's not impossible.

    Interview: Mar 4th, 2014

    Brandon Sanderson

I also asked him about capitalization. He talked about how in modern English, capitalization is boring and doesn't happen often enough, referring back to the Victorian era where they would just capitalize Important Words. I asked him about parshmen vs Parshendi and he said that the Parshendi were a nation. I also asked about skaa vs Noble but he didn't answer (I think he just forgot or missed it, I worded it with lots of unnecessary words and people are loud) but it would be safe to assume a similar reason.

    Question

Do you hear the Parshendi song as you write it?

    Question

Both Parshendi and Horneaters are able to see spren ordinary humans can't. Is there a connection between these abilities, or do they come from completely different sources?

    Question

Have we seen all four of the genders for the Parshendi?

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Question

Can the forms of power of the listeners be treated as opposite / equivalents of the Orders of the Knights Radiant. Could we consider Stormforms to be anti-Windrunners?

    Brandon Sanderson

You could consider it that way, but there is not a one-to-one analogue.

    Question

Because it looked like the powers of the voidforms are kind of like anti-Surges...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, yes, there is definitely something there, but again I say, it's not a one-to-one correlation. They are not going to be exactly opposite.

    AhoyMatey

Are the Parshendi at the village the only Parshendi there are? Besides the parshmen?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Parshendi as a people were all at Narak. Barring any scouts and things like that. That doesn't mean that there might not be any other Parshmen out there that have bonded spren, but they would not have been part of this nation – any more than if you found another human that they may not necessarily be American.

    Outis

Given that Investiture is Investiture, would there be potential Investiture of like, kandra to Parshendi using Hemalurgic spikes?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hemalurgic spikes can be used on any planet.

    Outis

Would it be potential for Parshendi to develop a form using the spikes?

    Brandon Sanderson

Wow, that would be a really weird hack of the magic system that would be theoretically possible. But that's a really weird one. I had never even considered that one. Parshendi adopting other Investiture could happen, the spikes is not one I've considered.

    Avatar_Yung-Thug (Reddit)

    Hi Brandon! Love your work!

Quick question: I had a hard time "hearing" the Parshendi's singing in my head while reading The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. Are there any real world examples you drew from you could give me so we have a better idea of what they sound like to you?

    Brandon Sanderson (Reddit)

It was tough, as I didn't want to constrain their language in English to a certain rhythm, as I felt it would be too gimmicky on the page. I used Hindu chants in my head, though, so that might help.

    Question

What happens to the spren the Parshendi bond when they switch form? So if they’re in soldier form, and they switch over to mate, what happens to the spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

    The spren is released.
    Question

So when they took on void, they didn’t kill their previous spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, they don’t kill when they - No. That’s a good question.
    Question

Do those spren evolve in any way into something else?

    Brandon Sanderson

Those spren that they are bonding with are generally what we call non-sapient spren, and so, no, and also the spren are barely aware that they’re bonded - the spren, the non-voidspren. Like when they’re bonding, generally what’s happening is how...It’s a symbiotic relationship, right? And the spren that get bonded to them, it’s just kind of, Oh, this is my life now! This is just normal. This is what’s happened. The same thing happens with spren involved in greatshells and things like this. This is a natural part of the natural cycle for those spren.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

A dullform Listener is indoors when the Everstorm passes over, will they be transformed into a Voidform?

    Brandon Sanderson

No. It depends on the strength of the boundary between them, but it is possible for them to...Being transformed, taking new forms, there is a measure of will behind it, meaning for instance, even when Eshonai took the new form, she had herself open to taking a new form. By the time she didn’t want to, it was too late. But she had made the decision, even though she’d been kind of misled in some ways. If a parshmen were even in the Everstorm, and aggressively didn't want this to happen, I'm not saying they won't, but there is room for discussion whether or not they would change there. But also one who DOES want to, and there's only a pane of glass and things like that, then yeah.

Is there a relationship between the Parshendi and the airships?

    Brandon Sanderson

The relationship is that I assumed when people saw the picture they would think Parshendi, and that was an intentional red herring. Or red and black herring. We spent a lot of time on that picture, I was like it has to look like that people, but it can’t be straight up like “Oh! This is what we’ve seen before here!” So we went back and forth on it a lot.
