    Interview: Apr 15th, 2013

    Reddit AMA 2013 (Verbatim)

    ryanthelion ()

I know that you are very meticulous in developing your stories. Were the shardblades, shardplate, Mistborn cloaks, or even Nightblood from Warbreaker developed in a similar fashion, or is it a more organic process to making cool weapons and armor? How do you blur the line between what makes sense, and what is just plain fun?

    Brandon Sanderson

There are connections in the things you mentioned above, though I don't want to speak of specifics yet for risk of spoiling future revelations.

As for blurring the line between what makes sense and what is fun...I err on the side of the fun. However, part of my meticulous planning is about how to make the fun make sense. I feel that is part of what makes this genre interesting. I decided I wanted to do a story about the Knights Radiant, with the Plate and Blades. From there, I spent a long time thinking about what would make those kinds of weapons reasonable and important to a society.

You can do anything, but do try to focus on laying your groundwork and being consistent.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2012

    BRANDON SANDERSON (paraphrased)

This further explains why Vin required more than normal power to push/pull the metalminds from the Lord Ruler, because of their proximity to his soul, via the Spiritual Realm.

3.) The amount of investiture is relatively low on Scadrial, whereas worlds like Sel and Roshar are pushing around "high power" according to Brandon. I interpreted this to mean that hemalurgic spikes and metalminds have low amounts of investiture compared to Shardplate and Shardblades.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2012

    BRANDON SANDERSON (paraphrased)

Brandon said that theoretically you can push/pull Shardblades and Shardplates but you would need to wield an incredible amount of power. One example he gave that could so such as a thing is that if you were a Mistborn wielding the full power of the Well of Ascension, you could push/pull Shardblades/plate

    NALESEAN:

I hope everyone enjoys the question I got to ask.

    Thanks,

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Kaist

Are the lighteyes descendants of the first people who took the Shards after the Knights Radiant abandoned them?

    Brandon Sanderson

I'm afraid I have to RAFO this too.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Zenith

Szeth mentions that Lashings don't work with shardplate (on?). Is there any way to get around this (As in, lashing with shardplate on, or lashing people with shardplate on), and, if so, does it have anything to do with the Knights Radiant and/or their ideals?

    Brandon Sanderson

This has to do with the nature of the magics in the cosmere. They interfere with one another. Something that contains a lot of power--we call it investiture--resists the efforts of magic to influence it. A strong spirit can interfere as well.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    PricklyBear

Is there a functional/structural difference between modern-day Shardplate and the stuff the Radiants wore? Did the Radiants have to use infused gems to keep their suits going or could they just 'breathe in' Stormlight and feed the suit off of their 'inhaled' reserves?

    Brandon Sanderson

Something is different. You will find out what.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    E. Hyde

Will we see illustrations of Shardplate and/or blades in the next Stormlight Archive book?

    Brandon Sanderson

Shallan will likely be doing some sketches from dueling grounds where Sharbearers fight.

    Interview: Nov 6th, 2012

    Question

Shardplate, does it have to be fitted by a smith or does it just kind of magically...?

    Brandon Sanderson

    It magically fits to you.

    JOSH

Iíd like to see it fit to someone three foot tall.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

If itís within reason, it can fit.

    QUESTION

But they do weld stuff to it to it?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

They weld stuff to it to ornament it.

    QUESTION

    But that doesnít really stick?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

It wonít stay, it can get cut off and things like that. Yeah, and they paint them and things.

    QUESTION

So the actual color is gray, right?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Dalinarís color is the actual color.

    QUESTION

He doesnít have it painted, yeah. Itís kind of stone, right?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Itís not really stone, itís more like a deep metallic, like an unbuffed steel sort of metallic. A dark charcoal metallic.

    Interview: Nov 6th, 2012

    Question

So we actually had a question. So the Shardplate, so like if you were to break up the Shardplate shirt first and then start regenerating it over a short person would it regrow to full size?

    Brandon Sanderson

A little person? A little person could probably find a way to get their Shardplate to regenerate to their size.

    Interview: Jun 20th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

He also mentioned these awesome suits of armor and like 6 foot long swords that he called "Shard Plate" and "Shard Blades." Apparently, they are the only relics left over from the time when mankind originally did have magic. Also, in the mythology of this world, mankind originally lived in heaven. However, a race of beings called (I think) the Voidbringers conquered heaven and basically cast mankind out to the earth. They made war on them again and tried to cast them out to hell, but mankind devised These Shard Blades and Shard Plate as a method of fighting the Voidbringers and were able to push them back. He also mentioned that the world is currently basically dominated by those who have these magical items, and one person with a suit of shard plate and a shard blade is basically the equivalent of an army. When I asked him if these were related to the Shards of Andonalsium at all, he said, "Maybe." He also confirmed that the Stormlight Chronicle (Way of Kings) takes place in the Shards universe.

The reason Way of Kings is called the Stormlight Chronicle apparently has to do with the massive hurricanes that come through every few days. If you leave a gemstone out during the storm (and affix it to something so it won't blow away), it will gain magical properties. One of these is that they give off light, called stormlight. The other that he mentioned is that they can be used kind of like a battery, and are used to power the Shard Plate Suits.

That's all I remember about the Way of Kings right now, maybe I'll remember something later.

    Footnote

The name Stormlight Chronicle has been changed to the Stormlight Archive.

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

And the last one we have here is: Is it possible to use a soulstamp to give shardplate life or at least achieve a robotic status?

    Brandon Sanderson

Wow, it is really, really hard to invest things that have already been invested. Let's just say that, it is really hard to do that. Part of the reason why it is difficult for instance to Push or Pull on something that is inside of somebody because the investiture is interfering and you would have that similar problem doing anything to shardplate with any of the magics.

    Interview: Oct 1st, 2013

    Question

Did all orders of Knights Radiants use Shardplate?

    Brandon Sanderson

It was available to all of them, and they could (all) use it. Many Knights (not Orders) chose not to. There were Knights who were not soldiers and had not interest in wearing Shardplate.

    Interview: Oct 5th, 2013

    Question

Is there any other canonical way to refer to a set of Shardplate and a Shardblade other than Shards, so as to not confuse them with the Shards of Adonalsium?

    Brandon Sanderson

They call them just Shard(s). It is a little confusing, because there are other Shards, but they don't know about them. I call them a set, but there is no canonical way to refer to them.

    Interview: Mar 29th, 2014

    Herowannabe

Iím curious, Iíve got a list of various cosmere bits of metal, and I wonder if you would rank them from like 1 to 10 or easy to difficult on how hard it would be to steelpush on them?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Okay.

    Herowannabe

So, like metal inside a personís body?

    Brandon Sanderson

It depends on how strong the investiture in them is.

    Herowannabe

Is that going to be the answer for all of these?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Probably. :)

    Herowannabe

How about a spike charged with Hemalurgy? Not in a person.

    Brandon Sanderson

Not in a person? It depends on how strongóyeah. A spike is moderatelyóin the realm of these sorts of thingsómoderately easy to push on, because a spike does not rip off very much investiture. Only enough to short circuit the soul, and it loses that over time. So I would put that at the bottomówith the top being very hardóto be one of the easier things.

    Herowannabe

How about a metalmind? A feruchemy metalmind that is "full."

    Brandon Sanderson

That is going to be middle of the realm. Generally easier than, for instance, a shardblade, which is going to be very hard.

    Aaradel

But a shardblade isnít actual metal. Ish?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ish. Is Lerasium a metal? Yeah.

    Herowannabe

So would that be the same for Shardplate, too?

    Brandon Sanderson

Shardplate and blade are very hard. Blade is probably going to be harder. [...]

    Herowannabe

    Halfshard? Like a halfshard shield?

    Brandon Sanderson

Halfshard shield is going to be in moderate.

    Herowannabe

Nightblood? I imagine is going to be very difficult.

    Brandon Sanderson

Very hard. Of all the things youíve listed, heís the hardest. Far beyond even a shardblade.

    Herowannabe

Far beyond metal inside a person?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, depending on how invested the person is.

    Aaradel

If someone was invested as much as Nightblood Iím pretty sure itís going to be very difficult.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, for instance, the Godking, at the end, with all of those Breaths. Pushing on something inside of him? Getting through all that? Gonna be REAL hard. Average person on Scadrial? Youíve seen how hard that is. A drab? Much easier.

    Herowannabe

That was actually going to be my next one- No, sorry, not a drab, a Lifeless.

    Brandon Sanderson

A Lifeless. Lifeless are kinda weird, because theyíve had their soul leave, but then theyíve had a replacement stuck in, in the form of Breath, which puts them in a really weird position compared to a Drab, which has had part of their investiture ripped away, but the majority of it remains. So anyway, Iím going to give you one more. Pick your favorite.

    Herowannabe

Okay, a soul-stamped piece of metal.

    Brandon Sanderson

A soul-stamped piece of metal is going to be on the lower, easier side. Not a lot of investiture going on in a soulstamp.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    RIT

Alright, glowing Shardplate and retractable helmets. Is that a similar origin of the Shardblades—

    Brandon Sanderson

There's a similarity, but they are also very different.

    RIT

Yeah, I noticed they do seem like advanced fabrials, because Adolin just keeps going on and on about how they're all interchangeable and how they all feel comfortable after a while, and it doesn't have the same kind of thing with the Shardblades.

    Brandon Sanderson

No, it doesn't. Though a Shardblade, used for a long time, will change shape slightly.

    Interview: Mar 18th, 2014

    Graeme Flory

    2. Shard plate and shard blades can win wars, what would you have made out of shard to win the battles in your day?

    Brandon Sanderson

These are very inventive questions. What would I want made out of this stuff? Someone once suggested a Shardpen. But no, a Shardpen isn't going to work any better than a non-Shardpen. I would say a Shardphone. If I could get a phone that never broke and everything always worked perfectly on it—or a Shardlaptop, that would be awesome.

    Interview: Aug 9th, 2014

    Jeremy

How much can you explain about Dalinar's armor and how he was able to "mentally unlatch his gauntlet"?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

This is definitely something a regular person couldn't do with regular armor. You can see in his visions hints of how the armor used to work. This is similar to Shardblades, and more will be revealed later.

    Interview: Aug 13th, 2014

    Question

Does Shardplate have one general style as a pattern, or do different types exist (like European armour vs. japanese armour), as the different kingdoms have different cultures?

    Brandon Sanderson

Different types exist, but it's more along order lines than cultural ones. (That said, a person's culture could certainly influence their armor.)

You are totally going to get a RAFO. You are asking good questions.

    Interview: Mar 20th, 2014

    Outis

    Will Allomancy affect Shardblades?

    Brandon Sanderson

It cannot affect Shardblades. Well, cannot is a strong term. Things with innate Investiture are much more difficult to affect by any of the magics at all. Which is why it's very hard for Szeth to bind people or lash people wearing Shardplate to the ceiling. In the same way Allomancy wouldn't be able to push on it without some help. Duralumin with a strong Push would probably do it.

    Outis

I was just wondering if it was actually metal.

    Brandon Sanderson

It is metalish--it's metal enough for Allomancy to work on it.

I was just curious about Shardplate. In one of the books you said it was seamless like there weren't any chinks in it anywhere.

There are chinks but there is no direct line to the skin. So like if you see a slit, there's another little plate behind it.

    Question

In the book [Way of Kings] you discuss that if you were to lose a piece of Shardplate you have to regrow the part back, or else someone takes it and tries to regrow the entire plate. One thing that has been bugging me for a while now is if you were to take a small piece of the armor, such as a glove, and fuel it with stormlight to regrow the whole armor, does it retain the original armor? Like does it retain how it looked before, the glove? So it just transfers over?
