    Interview: 2010

    Máté Csarmasz (13 August 2010)

Does Tear's name have anything to do with the English word (tear), or is it a coincidence only?

    Brandon Sanderson (13 August 2010)

Robert Jordan said he got names from mythology or, sometimes, they just sounded right. It might have just sounded right.

    Interview: Aug 25th, 1996

    Greebs

Cool. We [Notice that I'm trying to create the impression that there is more than just me there ...safety in numbers etc.] were also wondering about the size of the cities...how big is Caemlyn for instance?

    Robert Jordan

[Thinking] Let's see...Well Tar Valon is 500,000 people and cities like Caemlyn and Tear are around 300,000 or so. I've envisioned a seventeenth century society and you've got to remember that for those times 300,000 would be huge. [I'm nodding and trying to look intelligent.] Some Asian cities of that period had populations near one million but nothing in Europe was even close.

    Interview: Jul 14th, 2006

    Robert Jordan

By the way, I've seen posts various places suggesting that I've had Trollocs using gateways in previous books. I think this stems from the attack on the Stone of Tear where I speak of Trollocs and Myrddraal "leaping out of thin air." This was not meant to convey gateways—no openings in the air were mentioned—but rather the suddenness of their appearance. A cliche, I know. Later, in The Shadow Rising I think, I explained that they had been smuggled into the Stone using barges and wagons.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2011

    Fiddler

How would you compare Murandy's forces to those of Tear?

    Brandon Sanderson

(Paraphrase) If Murandy had any significant forces, would they have needed to hire the Band?

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Luckers

Okay, so the warding on the Great Holding in Tear... it’s just, Moiraine, Mat, Rand, the Wonder Girls, all come and go with ease, yet Mesaana speaks of there being a nasty warding that stopped her getting in, and there is no sign that Be’lal... I mean, why wouldn’t Be’lal have taken the fat man angreal?

    Brandon Sanderson

*nodding before I finished* MAFO. That was something I was going to look into myself, because it stumped me during my last re-read. I never got round to it... you haven’t seen the size of the pile of notes, they are huge, and most of my time... I have to give over to things that are involved in what I’m working on. Sometimes though, I do just go into them purely for fan interest.

    Luckers

I would love to have an afternoon alone with the notes. *another fan nods fervently*

    Maria Simons

It is my understanding that Rand put that warding on when he was getting ready to leave Tear. As for Be’lal . . . well, he was one of the Chosen; what need had he of an angreal to go up against an untrained sheepherder? That’s my best guess, anyway.

    Interview: Oct 22nd, 2016

    Question

So WoR mentions a particularly bright star known as the Tear (a reference to a tear shed by somebody named Reya) is that "star" actually one of the other planets in the greater roshar system, if so is it Ashyn or Braize?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO.
