    Interview: 2012

    Supahamir (19 February 2012)

We also meet three other people who can travel between the worlds, two of whom we've met before (one in Elantris and one in Mistborn), who are apparently trying to track Hoid down.

    Brilliant, just brilliant.

    robdizzledeets

This really makes me excited to meet Blunt from Dragonsteel.

    Peter Ahlstrom ()

Blunt is NOT from Dragonsteel. :)

    Footnote

Brandon later said that Blunt is from White Sand.

Can anyone with access to Shadesmar learn how to worldhop?

    Brandon Sanderson

In theory. Getting to Sel is really tough...

    Stroniax

Can people from one are of the cosmere Ruturn to the place from the cosmere where Awakeners are from (forgot the name)?

    Brandon Sanderson

Meaning, can they travel to Nalthis, where Warbreaker takes place? Yes, they can.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    mycoltbug

Are there any ramifications beyond leaving one's world behind when they world hop to other worlds? IE physical ailment, aging, time travel lag X1000

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    mycoltbug

Is there a magic system that best allows people to world hop between worlds?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, but it isn't needed. Some do help more with understanding how to traverse the Cognitive Realm.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    mycoltbug

Are there any world hoppers that we should recognize as world hoppers in anything other than tWok beyond Hoid?

    Brandon Sanderson

They aren't recognizable, and aren't intended to be, as of yet. There are some around, however.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Odium's_Shard

Can magic systems from one world work in any given other?

    Brandon Sanderson

For some, it will take quite a bit of work, but it's possible to get them each to work. Sel's magics are regional, and so they are going to be tough. Scadrial's magics are the easiest.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    E. Hyde

Since we generally don't see inhabitants of your worlds refer to their planets by name, where do the names come from?

    Brandon Sanderson

From world-hoppers, Shards, and those who know about the cosmere.

    Interview: Oct 30th, 2012

    Lance Alvein

You said to not travel to Shadesmar on Sel. Is this a consequence of Odium Splintering Aona and Skai?

    BRANDON SANDERSON (paraphrased)

It is indirectly related to the splintering. There is a clue to why it is dangerous in Way of Kings.

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

What are some characteristics of and how many other wordhoppers are there that we have seen excluding Hoid, Demoux, and Galladon.

    Brandon Sanderson

You gave me really good wiggle room on that one. Obviously the other person with Galladon and Demoux.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Right, the one from a future book.

    Brandon Sanderson

His characteristics are… What is he like? Some people have read his book so they know what he's like…

    Chris King (Miyabi)

    Which book is he from?

    Brandon Sanderson

    He's from White Sand.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Okay, that's one I have but have not gotten to.

    Brandon Sanderson

It's only mediocre so don't worry about it. Let's see what other worldhoppers I want to give you clues about… There’s a Terriswoman running around, if you keep your eyes open.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

I have to read it, everything.

    Brandon Sanderson

Who else do I want to talk about… Words of Radiance has a couple good ones, that will be pretty obvious.

    Footnote

The Terriswoman worldhopper was later revealed to be in Warbreaker though her identity is still unknown.

    Interview: Mar 29th, 2014

    Herowannabe

    When Sazed

    Brandon Sanderson

You do know that I've got a character in one of the books named Bowen? [Clarification: My name is Bowen. He said this while personalizing our books]

    Herowannabe

    Really?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. He's actually been in the books so far, but not by name. He's one of the Worldhoppers. If you go look and talk to them they may have identified him, some people who have read.

    Herowannabe

Thank you for naming a character after me!

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. I did it. He's from White Sand. I wrote the book in '98. Yeah, he's one of the Purelake guys.

    Herowannabe

    Is he Blunt?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, yeah. [...] (later) So yeah, Bowen, you'll have to see because when I redid the linguistics for the world, his name I think got changed. I think it's now Baon. But in the very first draft of the very first book I ever wrote his name was Bowen. And the reason I think I changed it - is because he's a bowman. And I'm like I can't name the bowman—the archer—Bowen. That's kinda dumb. But in my head he's still Bowen.

    Herowannabe

    Anyway, my question...

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Rhandric

Is Vasher trying to find Nightblood?

    Brandon Sanderson

Vasher misses Nightblood and feels responsible for him.

    Rhandric

How many worldhoppers have we seen?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, I haven't kept track, you've seen quite a few. There's one from Mistborn, did you catch him? I don't think people have really picked out the Terriswoman yet, who makes her way into them, but they're mostly not supposed to be noticeable yet, until you get to know them as characters and you look back and be like "oh that was that person."

    Rhandric

Is it the Terriswoman I think it is?

    Brandon Sanderson

I don't know which Terriswoman you think it is.

    Rhandric

    Tindwyl?

    Brandon Sanderson

    No.

    Kurkistan

Speaking of the Terriswoman, is she the nurse in Warbreaker?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Has she already popped up?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

When are we gonna see a published copy of [White Sand]?

    Brandon Sanderson

We're working on a graphic novel of it right now.

    Question

    Who's gonna do the art?

    Brandon Sanderson

We have four or five people who have sent us pitches, and we are looking through them to decide who we want to use.

    Question

Can you put me in one of your novels? I'm a three-fingered Irishman who speaks four languages.

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, write me an email that says "I'm a three-fingered Irishman who speaks four languages," we'll see what we can do. [...] Who did you think Hoid was, in White Sand?

    Question

Hoid is not a real person, he did not start life as [can't make out].

    Brandon Sanderson

No, who did you think he was in White Sand?

    Question

I don't know yet, I'm not that far.

    Phantrosity (Tor.com)

    Question

Demoux is the only world hopper we've seen that inherently ages. Is there something about world hopping that makes someone not age?

    Interview: Mar 6th, 2014

    Question

Do you know how you're going to write how Hoid goes between worlds?

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2013

    Question

Are there going to be other characters other than Hoid that will be crossing over between books?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, in fact there are characters in the way of kings...(essentially mentions the known Ishikk interlude worldhoppers). I told people that there is a Terriswoman in Warbreaker somewhere, I believe that would be somewhat hard to spot. That one, I don't think you will be able to pick out until you see her later on and then go back and say 'wait a minute'.

Did the Lord Ruler know how to worldhop?

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Question

The prevailing theory on the 17th Shard is that Hoid worldhops using Shadesmar. Could you confirm or deny that?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hoid has indeed gotten between worlds before through Shadesmar.

    Question

And would you be willing to give us a hint as to how he does that?

    Brandon Sanderson

There are hints in the books. There is a hint in the very first cosmere book I released [Elantris]. Which I thought was a huge hint, but so far I haven't seen anyone talking about it.

    Argent

    Really?

    Brandon Sanderson

Mmhmm. I thought that once people started figuring the cosmere, they would see the massive in-your-face hint I put in that book, but so far, as far as I know, no one has. [Some chat about Brandon's tendency to drop sneaky hints and how he likes doing that] Now, the one [hint] about the map, that one I don't think is obvious. I know people have been trying to figure it out. It's something fun once you figure it out, but it's not something huge and obvious. The Elantris once was, like, enormously "HIIINT!"

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2014

    Question (Paraphrased)

    Is Mraize a worldhopper?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Yes, he's been to a few planets, highly supervised by his babsk.

    Question (Paraphrased)

So what planet is she [Iyatil] from?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, that's kind of a hard thing to say. She has three planets she's "from". For example, she's living now on Roshar, but then she's from a different planet, but that's not the planet that her people are from.

    Question (Paraphrased)

So there was a mass exodus to that planet?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not exactly. If you were to find a Japanese American, where would they say that they are from? Her people did not have a mass exodus.

    Question (Paraphrased)

Have we seen mass exoduses before?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, there are some in the cosmere. There's a mass exodus that is mentioned in one of the interludes in The Way of Kings.

    Question

I'm not sure if it was duralumin or something but the Feruchemical ability to store Connection, is that how Hoid worldhops? It stores Connection to another world?

    Brandon Sanderson

It's a good question, it doesn't have anything to do with worldhopping but what it does do is once you have worldhopped you can change your Connection to which planet you are on, which helps you with magic systems.

Also, what about the three individuals we know to have traveled to and from Sel? Did they use the Shadesmar anyway, or have they accessed an alternate method of worldhopping?

Is it possible for spren to move from one planet to another?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is possible for them to get to other planets. They are tied to certain realms… A lot of them reside in the cognitive realm and are pulled into the physical by their bonds--

    Brandon Sanderson

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, that is one of the Elsecaller powers.

    Footnote

The most interesting thing about this is that, depending on the number of people in the Elsecaller order, there may have been quite a few Worldhoppers from Roshar throughout history. i'm surprised they weren't more Cosmere-aware if that was the case, but maybe they always just stuck around Roshar? I wonder how many Elsecallers are on other planets....

    Brandon Sanderson

There are hints in the names on the map of Shadesmar.

    Footnote

Since getting this answer I found out a few more things about this on the 17th Shard. It looks like previous WoB confirmed that there are hints in the names of things on Shadesmar somewhat related to Worldhopping, and we also know that the Expanse of the Densities is a planet that we already know. Interview: Nov 22nd, 2016

    BYU Bookstore (Paraphrased)

    Djarskublar

So, say you have a gold/gold Twinborn and they worldhop to Roshar and they study the magic and do the whole Khriss and Nazh thing for a while so that they know a lot about the magic, but they've also left themselves a lot of options with what they can do. So then they manage to pull up a gold shadow of them having actually become a Surgebinder and then kind of meld themselves with that shadow a bunch, could they change their Cognitive Identity enough so that they could, like, tap a lot of Gold and grow the spren and actually be a Surgebinder?

    Brandon Sanderson

Unfortunately, no. It's a good question, but no. That won't work for a couple of reasons. One of which is simply creating Investiture is not something that can happen, right?

    Djarskublar

They are a gold Twinborn, so they can tap a lot of gold...

    Brandon Sanderson

They can tap a whole bunch, that's true, they can do that, but simply having it is not gonna create a spren because the spren is from a different god, right, a different Shard.

    Djarskublar

So if they had Regrowth cast on them, would that do it?

    Brandon Sanderson

hems and haws for a second.

    Djarskublar

A really, really big Regrowth like in the middle of a Highstorm.

    Brandon Sanderson

Hmmm, this, you are getting to the realm of plausibility at that point. I still don't think gold is the way to do it. I think you just get all that Investiture. It would become sapient by you sticking a whole bunch of Investiture, and then you can bond to that. But it's not like people gain what you would have done. Does that make sense? That's just what's going to happen, is you're gonna, you can create a, potentially create a spren that way, but you are more likely to end up with something like Nightblood. But you could potentially create a spren, but I mean you're just gonna end up...

    Djarskublar

So there are more optimal ways to do that?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, go bond a spren. (evil grin of course)

    Djarskublar

But you can't easily bond multiple, and if you did this you could maybe get multiple.

    Brandon Sanderson

Nyeaaahhh... The spren still has to choose. If you want to be a Surgebinder, the choice is being made. You can't fake your way into it. Decision and Honor are too much a part of Surgebinding for you to be able to fake your way into that. Other magics you might be able to do that. Other magics that don't require, like, Surgebinding works because a piece of Honor or Cultivation or a mix has chosen you specifically. There is will from the actual Investiture involved in it in Roshar.

    Djarskublar

    Okay.

    Brandon Sanderson

So it's not something you can cheat your way into, right. But cheating your way into Breath might be easier, right.

    Brandon Sanderson

The 17th Shard is about nonintervention, but they're not doing so great a job, seeing as they took the common cold to Roshar.

    Question

    no question specified

    Brandon Sanderson

The "how-did-Vasher-get-to-Roshar" thing will be explained. For now, we know that Vasher got tired of "sucking souls" and, through previous study with a group of scholars, knew how easy it was to get Investiture on Roshar (same way he knew what a Shardblade was so he could try to replicate it (and we all know how that turned out: Nightblood)). With this same group of scholars, he figured out how to get into the Cognitive realm.

    Interview: Sep 6th, 2016

    Question

I asked whether spren, particularly those bonded to a Knights Radiant, could worldhop,

    Brandon Sanderson

and he said that it would be very difficult for them to.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

I want to know how Hoid travels between worlds. Or, if you won’t tell me right now, will we ever find out?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hoid has traveled between the worlds by getting in one Shardpool in Shadesmar and coming out a different one. So that is one method he has used to travel between the worlds. The worlds are connected through Shadesmar. Um, things that people don’t think about as much reflect very minorly in Shadesmar, so most of the space between planets is cut out, and there’s some weird, twisted geography going on there.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

So if I’m a Surgebinder and I have my own Cognitive entity with me, can I go off-world with that and [have] everything continue to work in exactly the same way? Because we’ve seen Cognitive entities that--

    Brandon Sanderson

So...taking a Cognitive entity off-world is hard. So, Surgebinding, if you can find out how to make it happen, remember, the Investiture is keyed to Connection. This is why Kelsier is--Oh, sorry, spoilers! When a certain somebody [laughter] getting off Scadrial, because he basically was a spren by that point so…[laughter] So, yeah Surgebinding would work off planet, but you’d have to get the spren off first. It’s hard to do. Well, Cosmere-wide it’s not hard hard...You could learn how.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

Has Denth ever been to Scadrial?

    Brandon Sanderson

So Scadrial is one of the planets that’s easier to get to, in Cosmere terms. I will say this: he did not travel the Cosmere widely. But Scadrial is one of the easier ones to get to - he spent a lot of time on Roshar, and did not travel widely.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

The two Shards on Sel were kind of pressed into the Cognitive Realm. Is that what makes travel there so difficult?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. Because you usually travel through the Cognitive Realm, but that’s not exactly what you want to be doing on Sel.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

Is it possible that someone could have gotten to the Cognitive Realm on Scadrial without the Well of Ascension?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Question

    ...Can we know how?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, how many Shardpools would Scadrial have?

    Question

Two, so the Pits of Hathsin would be so?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. So you’ve adopted the term “Shardpool.” That was never really my term, but I’ve started using it. What happens with a Perpendicularity is large concentrations of Investiture, particularly purely attuned to one of the Shards, will create an access point. You’ve seen another one--

    Question

    Yeah, yeah I know these.

    Brandon Sanderson

You know which one I’m referencing?

    Question

    Yes.

    Brandon Sanderson

That you didn’t see a Pool from?

    Question

    Oh wait… [Laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, he knows, so… We’ll move on.

    Question

    Why??!! [general protest, laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, fine. Umm, at the end of Words of Radiance.

    Argent

There has to be one there because Jasnah has to leave somehow, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, but Honor’s Perpendicularity moves.

    Question

    Woah...so...Highstorm?

    Brandon Sanderson

    [hems and haws]

    Question

So, I don’t know if this is a RAFO sort of question, but you call them Perpendicularities, will we see this sort of thing created?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, Perpendicularities can be created. You’d need a ton of Investiture. But, basically what Jasnah does is create a little mini Perpendicularity and slips herself into the Cognitive Realm.

    Question

So it’s just a question of skill, not a question of--

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. It’s hard to pull off...but some of the powers are built to do it.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

So we know some people can survive going through Perpendicularities, but we also know, like, when Rock talked about the lake that people swam in, that Hoid came out of, he [Rock] said that some people who swam in it died. So, who can and can’t survive a Perpendicularity?

    Brandon Sanderson

So, you should not take much of what Rock says. When he says they swim in it and they die, they just went through the Perpendicularity. They just don’t come back; what would you think if someone swims and doesn’t come back; they have drowned.

    Question

    So pretty much anyone can?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is not traumatic to go through most Perpendicularities.

    Question

So it depends on where, who and when?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Uh huh.

    Question

    Okay, that’s good to know.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

Have we seen cameos of Heralds on other Shardworlds?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds are tied to the system by the magic that permeates them. They could not leave. It’s part of the magic. Some would call them Cognitive Shadows, right? Whether they are or not. ‘Cognitive Shadow’ is a very ambiguous term in the Cosmere. It means, basically your soul-- Investiture replaced your soul, and permeated your soul, and your soul continues to exist, but you are usually Invested with something, that’s tied, and you’re basically like pure Investiture then. You’re tied to the thing you’re Connected to. Most of the things that you’re gonna see like that, traveling is going to be very difficult, unless you know how to do it. You have seen people do it.

    Question

    Who?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Vasher.

    Question

    Sure, sure.

    Brandon Sanderson

You have seen people do it.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

So, why did Hoid in Secret History have to ride on another person to get to the Well, when that person could float on--

    Brandon Sanderson

Sooo, what he’s floating on is a Cognitive Shadow, it’s a spirit, it’s not an actual person.

    Question

    Do we know them?

    Brandon Sanderson

You don’t know them, don’t worry about them. But see, he’s using that as a boat because it’s easy to sink through the mist. And if you notice, he has to coat his oar with Investiture in order to move him. So yeah, he’s floating on a person’s soul. It was so much easier with the Pits, but that’s because there were boats and things.
