It was someone he recognized. The other Forsaken are out, any of them who could have gotten that close to Rand would have taken an extra 5 minutes to kill him as well. Yet it must be someone who could dispose of the body easily as he was just inside the door to the courtyard where Mat and Aviendha were sitting and there had to have been servants in the palace walking around. The only answer to both of these is Slayer. He could easily have entered the palace from T'A'R and then taken the body back into T'A'R with him.

Asmo is dead, but RAND AL-BLOODY-THOR doesn't know it. Just because of that fact, I'm pretty sure that somebody -- maybe Taim, maybe a Forsaken -- will use the mask of mirrors to appear as Asmo. They'll think that it will let them talk to Rand, but instead they get balefired back to the AoL as a traitor (RAND doesn't know it's not Asmo!). Darn I want that to happen.

I predict that even if in the next book we get a signed confession by one of the characters that he or she killed Asmodean, a videotape of the event, AND a viewing by Min that that person killed Asmo, we'll still argue about who did it.
