think it was Demandred. He had means, motive and opportunity.

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Asmodean's Demise

Firstly Demandred = Taim. There is lots of evidence for this, LTT insistance that Rand should kill him every time he shows up, his 'so called aiel' line as he remembers what they were like in the AOL. This would give him ample motive, as Asmodean could reveal him as a fraud to Rand if they met. Plus of course the Forsaken are quite keen on trimming each other, especially Asmodean who has been 'cut' from the DO. Demandred seems to be working most closely with the DO."

As for means, well nobody's found a body yet, and I don't think there will be one to find. For a traitor such as Asmodean, the DO isn't going to go any half measures. The lack of a body indicates one of two things, that there is either no body or it is hidden. the only reason to puposely hide the body would be to raise doubt in Rand's mind that Asmodean was dead.. It's hard to see what thats going to achieve. The only sure way, and the DO would consider it fitting, would be to balefire Asmodean. Then you get Rand paranoid, and wipe treacherous Asmodean out of the pattern. Of all the candidates we only know of one who's been given permission to use balefire. "WOULD YOU UNLEASH BALEFIRE IN MY SERVICE, DEMANDRED" The others would be wary of using such drastic measures.

Opportunity is a bit more tricky, but Taim / Demandred does seem to have a ear in most things. With his ability to travel he could easily get to Asmodean. Its not impossible that he heard second hand about Rand's gleeman and could of put two and two together. The forsaken knew by then that Asmodean had changed sides. Its more likely that he has nurmerous spys in Rand's camp, perhaps an Aiel or two.

All the above fits with Asmodeans final moments, he opens the door. "You!" in a surprised voice. Well he was looking for wine and found a former cohort from the AOL, I'd be surprised

I'm sure this theory has many holes. One being that Asmodean seemed to be lost, so did he bump into his killer by chance? Sorry its a bit long, its my first post.

No problem whatsoever...take a look at my theory about Asmodean's killer, it is rather long. I think you have pointed out some good stuff here, but as you said at the end and what still confuses me is how did the killer place themselves right where he was going...it almost seems like he surprised someone?

I'm about to outpour quite a lot of stuff, sorry. Ok I said before it was Demandred, well I've changed my mind, so please bear with me.
In the Loc prologue Demandred's discussion with the DO all but rules him out. When the DO says that Asmodean has died the final death Demandred is surprised that the DO 'seemed to know more than he'. So Demandred didn't know he was dead. However, earlier in the prologue Demandred says
"Lanfear has vanished without a trace, just as Asmodean did "
At first glance that would seem to be a stronger indication that Demandred doesn't know what happened to Asmodean, however look at the language: ..just as Asmodean did.. Why the use of the word 'did' compare it to "Lanfear has vanished without a trace, just LIKE Asmodean" or "Lanfear has vanished without a trace, just as Asmodean HAS" both would indicate that both Asmodean and Lanfear were still vanished. The way the sentence reads to me indicates that Asmodean DID vanished, but that Demandred now knew where he was. This would still fit in with his surprise at hearing of Asmodeans death. He knew where he was but the DO knew more, that he was dead.
OK so who killed Asmodean. Who knew where he was. Well Demandred did, but who would Demandred tell. So far in the books we have seen little sub groups among the Chosen, where they meet eachother.
Aginor + Balthamel,
Lanfear + Graendal + Rahvin + Sammael.
Demandred + Mesaana + Semirhage +Graendal
Graendal + Sammael (after R + L unavailable)
If you again go back to the prologue you see:
"Graendal says Moghedrien failed to meet her as agreed. Also yesterday"
so Demandred was talking to Graendal before coming to ShayolGhul. Later when Mesaana, Semirhage, Graendal and Demandred meet 'still Demandred kept silent, stood there studying them. No, not Graendal. Semirhage and her' Don't Forsaken normally watch each other like hawks, why the sudden relaxed mood around Graendal. Also from that meeting, Graendal does arrive very quickly after Demandred. Coincidental? Graendal doesn't seem shy about spreading her 'loyalties' around, of all the forsaken she's been seen with the most of the others. Sammael, Demandred, Lanfear, Mesaana, Rahvin, Semirhage, and Mogehedien. So she would be quite capable of linking up with Demandred, even though she's still 'involved' with Sammael. The situation may also have made her decide to make new connections, (allthough it could have been a long 'alliance') Picture the scene the Rahvin, Sammael, Graendal, Lanfear alliance is in tatters. Rand erases Rahvin, Lanfear goes for a trip with Moiraine, Sammael's hardly the most stable of playmates so she links up with Demandred, who's got a plan -Taim. Demandred tells her where Asmodean is (or possibly Graendal could have been the one to tell Demandred, but her base of operations is further away Arad Doman) perhaps there is a plan, Graendal agrees to kill Asmodean, but Demandred doesn't know when she's going to do it. More likely she goes off her own bat, travel to Caemlyn, balefires Asmodean, and leaves. Does she do this to protect her new ally Demandred - perhaps, more likely for the higher standing it puts her in with the DO. After the event she makes a trip to Shayol Ghul, and is promisedNa'bliss. If you look at her background, what the other forsaken say about her:

she'hides things in plain sight'
she's 'direct, likes using force, but one sure step at a time'seems to fit in with this little scheme.
ALTERNATIVLY She's in Caemlyn for her own purposes, which will become clear in tPoD (watch out for the enamoured) and comes across Asmodean by mistake, then frys him. I think I've done this one to death. The Demandred knowing bit is just slightly dodgy, and the rest not much better. So to sumup:

Graendal did it, Demandred her unknowing accomplice oh by the way, if Lanfear's out of finnland all bets are off.
