ot So Fast, Lews Therin Is A Great Possibility

by Ratoncito Gris: 1998-06-14 | Not yet rated

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Who helped Rand in Shadar Logoth?

My theory agrees with some of the others: The man was Lews Therin. As how he was separated from Rand, The answer is a bit complicated, so sit, relax and go on reading: When the two balefires melted, Rand saw everything doubled. The resonance was so big because he and LTT were the same person that's why he couldn't detect his channeling. When the two balefires melted, Rand and LTT got separated in two different persons. Due to balefire's special characteristics, LTT was thrown to the past, just in time to help Rand, and to throw balefire to Mashandar, and to cross the streams with Rand... etc. This is a paradox (how could LTT and Rand cross the streams in the First time?), but balefire can affect events that have already happened in the past. I think that balefire CAN produce important paradoxes that's the reason it's so dangerous for the pattern. If you have read all this, my congratulations. If you really have understood it, my amazed congratulations again. Sometimes I'm not sure I understand it myself. P.D. English is not my first languaje, so this will probably have some spelling or grammatical errors. I'd think it would be better if you if you edited it before putting it in your page.(The Little Grey Mouse).

Oscar, I would like to believe this, but David Petty who wrote above you does bring up the point about the description of the person who helped Rand, do you have any rebuttal.

I agree that Lews Therin helped Rand, and the paradox theory makes sense. I had not been able to explain how they seperated before. To strenghten this argument, I can add a couple of ideas.

1. As was already mentioned, Rand has not been hearing Lews in his head lately. Add to this, Min's viewing of a man merging with Rand. How the merging of Lews and Rand affects their relationship I do not know. Are their concionesses still seperate, or is that merged too? Anyways...

2. The man did not embrace the source the source until Rand did. Actually, they did it at the same time. If they are merged, this could explain it. Lews cannot touch the source until Rand does, or else, being one person the source fills them both when one reaches for it.

3. The resonance from the crossed weaves of Balefire would cause the paradox. I do not debate this point. However, I have not been able to decidewhether it is ! the backlash of the severed weaves that causes the resonance, or some sort of mirror effect. We know that severed weaves have an unfortunate tendancy to snap back on the wielder. The strength of the flows of Balefire could definitely cause damage in their recoil. However, since Balefire erases the target from the Pattern before it is actually hit...? Does this erase the flows before they whiplash back into Rand and the man? If this is so, what causes the resonance? It could be a side effect of colliding balefire that has do with the shock of their weaves being erased. However, I keep toying with the idea that it has something to do with the people wielding the power more than anything. If you watch Star Trek, you have heard of Matter and Anti matter. When the two come in contact, BOOM! Think of Lews as a reflection of Rand. An Anti-Rand drawing on the anti-true source. When their flows come in contact...BOOM!, double vision. I am not saying there is an Anti TS, it! is just the best way to explain things.

4. The man knows Rand has knowledge about the Forsaken, and encourages him to use what he knows about Sammael. It is not widely known that Rand knows details about the Forsaken. Lews would because the knowledge came from him. This alone is not proof, but it is a fact that fits with the theory.

5. Just because the man looks about Rands age does not mean he cannot be LTT. Where does it say that he has to look the same age as when he died. Maybe Lews is reflected as he looked when he was Rands age. He is merged with Rand after all.

6. The man disappears after the encounter. He did not have time to get out of sight around another corner once he entered the alley. Rand did not feel the source embraced so he could not have made a gateway. If they truely are merged, then Rand would have had to hold the TS for Lews to make a gateway (which Rand would not feel). But Rand did not hold the TS. I have not really made ! much of an argument, but I hope I have brought up some interesting theories.

The helper's hair was black (CoS hardcover pp 656-658)- whereas in EoTW - Prologue LTT looks in a mirror and sees whitening hair that is no longer brown (that is not verbatim, but close) - suggesting he once had brown, not black, hair.
