Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Who is Tam al'Thor?

The more I think about it, the more I believe that Tam was a Warder at some point. Look at the two main instances where Tam gets to slaughter Trollocs(TEoTW and TSR?). In both battles he cuts through the Trollocs like they're standing still. Now who else do you know of that can handle Trollocs that well? The Shienarins and Warders, and most Shienarins aren't as proficient in combat as Warders are. Another possibility is that he may have had a Warder as a close friend. Take Rand for example, he fought as well some of the best Warders before he was bonded because of his training with Lan. Maybe the same is true for Tam, he was just Warder trained. That could also explain how he knows so much about Aes Sedai. Where there's a Warder there's almost always going to be at least one Aes Sedai. Maybe I'm not seeing this from every angle but I think is a pretty acurate hypothesis. Give some feedback.

I agree, Tam's reactions, ect. were to good for just a common soldier. I believe he was taught by a Warder as you suggested.

Well.....Warders aint actually the only ones that is handy with the sword. There is a lot of experienced soldiers and blademasters to. The void isnt that hard to learn, so Tam isnt necessarily trained by warders. But he did fight in the aiel war, right in front of the White Tower in fact. He may have met a warder who just told him about the void. For the rest he probably were like Rand, Galad, Gawyn and Aram a talented swordsman who trained alot.

You have done a fair job of supporting my theory in an indirect sort of way. Look at your first three examples: Rand, Gawyn and Galad. All three were Warder trained. Now look at your last example, Aram. If my theory about Tam is correct, then Aram was(for all intents and purposes) also Warder trained. I agree that the Flame and Void could be picked up through conversation but that unique deadly grace and the forms used by the Warders and Blademasters would require a good deal of dedication on Tams part and equal dedication from the teacher. It's not exactly the kind of stuff you just pick up along the way.

You want blademasters that were not warder trained? Lets see: Sammael and BeLal (Iseiously doubt them beeing warder trained), that Seanchan dude Rand fought in THoV, that noble guy he fought in the rebel camp in CoS. It shows that anyone who train or fight alot gets pretty good, the Aiels(with spears, but they would probably by just as good with the blade if that had been their weapon of choise), the Borderlanders, the Warders, old veteran soldiers and nobles that gets good trainig. Remember that the ones I mentioned were to be counted as talented swordsmen have beaten blademasters with much more training!

My apologies for not replying to Mosleths next argument sooner. You've given some excellent examples here. Though I retain my opinion of Tam being a Warder or Warder trained, I concede this argument to you. Mosleth has made me consider something about the Warder grace. If you notice, only Warders and the male Forsaken have been described with the tell tale "deadly grace". Perhaps that grace stems from the One Power. Though Warders don't use the One Power, the Bond itself is created with the One Power. Maybe the "deadly grace" is one of the benefits bestowed upon Warders as a result of the Bond and male Aes Sedai have it because they use the One Power?
