An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

or All of You Who Think The Seanchan Are All That

by Shaq: 1998-07-18 | Not yet rated

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Where will the next Seanchan attack occur?

The point of this series is not the Seanchan, and they will never be its focus. The WoT has so far focused on an obviously age old struggle between the DO and the Creator, and has concerned itself with those beings who are caught up in the whirlwind this struggle always creates. The Seanchan are simply another factor that both sides must deal with. They are not evil they may seem so at times, especially to the main continent's characters, but they are simply so different that their danger might as well be considered evil (see Birgitte's description of the Eelfinn and Aelfinn to Perrin in front of the Tower of Genji in TSR--the same applies here). Since they are not of the Shadow, the Shadow must deal with them as it does all other peoples. They are not the key to the victory of the Light either if they conquer the continent they will not win tarmon'gaidon as Rand's second trip through the Portal Stones in TGH states ("the world's new masters [the Seanchan]" fall to the Trolloc Armies). They are powerful, and if Rand had never become the man he is today, they would have plucked the main continent like a grape. Want to know who will stop the s-guys? It will be a combination. The sul'dam, though they can kick butt, are not a match for the Asha'man--no female channelers are. If Rand must face damane, they will be there. What about all those soldiers? The Aiel!!! They are the most powerful fighters in the world, no matter what grolm and loparsthe Seanchan may use. Remember in TDR, when a handful of the Aiel face 3 Myrdrall? "Dance with me, Nightrunner" they chant. Aiel are almost fearless, they are born fighters, and they are the only peoples on whom both the Trolloc War armies and Artur Hawkwing himself (remember who the Seanchan are) splintered their teeth. If Rand must force them to submission, I think the Asha'man and a few HUNDRED THOUSAND fearless warriors will do the trick. If the situation ever goes that far. I still believe Mat is the key (there is too much evidence supporting a connection between the Daughter of the Nine Moons and the Seanchan). Regardless, the world will come to a "peace" before the Last Battle--very simply, a land divided or a land controlled by the Seanchan could not win when the DO can once again reach the pattern. Rand's "peace of the sword" will reign until the Trollocs come. The "great battle" that Nicola talks of may be the Last Battle, but I think what will come after tarmon'gaidon, if we ever glimpse that world in this series, won't really include a Seanchan conquest more than it will another Breaking. --sorry that was so long, but I needed to say it--

Well...I would say you are absolutely right that the Seanchan are not the focus and will never be. Although, two women linked are a match for any male Aes Sedai and 13 women linked will bring down the house. Also remember, the Seanchan train their Aes Sedai to kill just as efficiently as Taim has trained the Asha'man, I believe you underestimate the Seachan power in this aspect. Not to be overbearing, but please read RJ's Balticon interview April of 1996...it is to long to include but he responds to the issue of "peace" in Randland and pretty much says that not only will there not be peace there will continue to be more chaos, and more chaos. And Nicola's foretelling even states that the land will still be divided even after the DO is defeated....Okay I've spoken enough, just when my name is used in someone's opinion I feel like I should speak up.

I agree with Shaq that the Seanchans arent in focus, but they are pretty close. So close that Rand uses one of their spears as a septer. An open war with the Seanchans could probably ruin all chanses about winning against the DO. The handfull of aiels who in the TDR faced tree Fades, didnt fight them, so we dont know how many of them who would have died. The Seanchan is perhaps almost as good as Aiels in battle, remember the Fortress of Light. And! We dont know the actual force of the Seanchan, how many soldiers, suldames and beasts do they have? I think the only solution is peace, made by Mat. HE WILL LEAD THE SEANCHAN! P.S. Mat isnt wery found of Aes Sedais either.
