he Three Oaths in Battle

by Travis Davis: 1998-09-22 | Not yet rated

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Where will the next Seanchan attack occur?

I have an interesting observation about how the capturing of Aes Sedai will be the downfall of the Seanchan army. If Seanchan think they are bolstering the number of damane for battle, they are in for a big surprise because the Three Oaths will not allow any(excluding Black Ajah) Aes Sedai to take an active role in battle. The only way the Aes Sedai could kill for the Seanchan would be to have their lives endangered, but putting the Damane in the front lines of the battle wouldn't be sound military strategy. If the Seanchan don't realize the limitations of Aes Sedai Damane it will end up costing them a battle.

This would be a very argumentative discussion. Some might say that while in the Adam the AS might feel as though her life is threatened and in that sense can channel to save it. Or maybe the A'dam can override the oath rod? Good observation...what does everyone think?

It is a very good question as to whether or not one ter'angreal can override another.... You would think that one of the older ter'angreal would override a newer one. I have always wondered if the a'dam was rediscovered when it was made during Artur's time, or if that was never around in the age of legends. It would certainly explain why Moggy didn't understand what it did. But the nine oath rods those survived the breaking. Maybe because they only use one, it can be overridden, but somehow I think that the a'dam would be lesser than an oath rod. Maybe it's one of those little ways that evil triumphs over good, 'cause good is dumb? Maybe being leashed and not obeying is threatening to one's life--at least it is to one's stomach, and that overrides the oaths?

The tree oaths isnt a new thing. the Seanchan is sertainly aware of them. And they have captured aes sedai, so i think they can overwrite the oaths.

Travis, you think that the downfall of the Seanchan will be the Three Oaths, however, I don't think so. Logically, in the Age of Legends, where everything is peaceful, and Aes Sedai were making all these ter'angreal, they wouldn't want to permantently bind someone against their will. I think that you can take oaths back using the oath rod. Otherwise, how can the Black Ajah lie? I think that initiates to the Black Ajah can unswear their oaths on the Oath Rod, using Ishy to get it for them (he was free pretty often). They might even swear some of their own oaths. The main way for the Seanchan to find channelers is to either capture Egwene or the White Tower. Because the position of the White Tower is constant, they would probably try for that. Once in possesion of the Tower, they could get Aes Sedai to unswear the Oaths.

In regard to the Oaths or the A'dam being stronger in TGH, I think, the Seanchan were talking and they said that they couldn't get Pura (formerly AS) to lie no matter what they tried, so that would make me assume that the rest of the oaths would stay in place as well.
