Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Miscellaneous Theories

I'm not sure if this is a theory or a question. I've just discovered the WOT on the web so this may have been discussed already - if so forgive me. In LoC it seems to be established that men cannot detect the ability in other men, p. 112: Taim channels and "Rand could feel the power in Taim, though only a small amount, and could see the thin flow of Fire the man wove. The flame brought a startling relief to Rand, startling because it was proof Taim really could channel." this seems to show that male channelers cannot detect the inherent ability in other men. then on p. 116-7 Rand has Taim seize saidin in order to sense how much Taim can hold - again another indication that the inherent ability is not detectable, only when power is actually being held.

later - after Nynaeve Heals Logain, he tells her "You know, I saw a man once who will cause more trouble than I ever did. Maybe it was the Dragon Reborn I don't know. It was wqhen they took me through Caemlyn after I was captured. He was far away, but I saw a. . .a glow and I knew he'd shake the world." (p.602, LoC)

The only other time someone has seen a "glow" surrounding a character is Nicola detecting the ta'veren ability in Mat when he rides into Salidar. Also, in (from what i recall) when we've seen male channelers detecting others holding itis only while holding and a sense of how much they can handle. So, how come Logain sees a glow around Rand when he is just hangin' out on the palace walls and being a pesky tourist? Has this already been discussed to death elsewhere? if not, why should it matter that Logain can see ta'veren as it is a "minor Talent" and pretty worthless since all the AS and pretty much evreyone else in RandLand seems to know that Rand, Mat & Perrin are ta'veren. There can't be too many others walking 'round. Thoughts orcomments?

Good thought, I hadn't considered the male channelers having talents also. It makes sense and is most likely true. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be, the glow references support your idea well. No one has mentioned this yet.

Logain can see ta'veren. This is pretty obvious. Remember, Siuan Sanche can see it, and she described Rand as blazing like the sun.

To Pagemaster: my question of why Logain might be able to detect ta'veren is left unanswered and is not as obvious as you stated it. The reasons I believe so are found below.

Yes, I do remember that Siuan Sanche can see ta'veren – from TGH - however what is the reasoning for Logain to be able to see ta'veren???

By that I mean, for Siuan's sensing that is pretty clearly for plotting reasons – till then Loial has told us that ta'veren exist and from what we know it becomes clear that the boys are indeed ta'veren but Siuan's Talent is the first confirmation. From what we are told in the book & the Glossary, detecting ta'veren is a “minor Talent” and really not that significant so why is it that obvious that Logain should have that ability??? As I stated earlier, half of RandLand knows the boys are ta'veren so Logain all of a sudden proclaiming “these Emond Field boys are ta'veren” would not make a huge impact, no? so my original question of why would he be able to see them is still left unanswered.

Something I thought about after my original posting: male/female channeling & Talents seem to be different i.e. Healing works differently for Flinn & Yellow Ajah AS (CoS) Travelling for Egwene & Rand are different (boring a hole in the pattern as opposed to creating similar spots to pass thru) so why should they be necessarily the same for detecting ta'veren? (and yes, that contradicts my original posting – but it was a question to begin with so....)
