Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Miscellaneous Theories

In CoS, one of Mat's men mentions a fog in the Rahad that ate people. There were strange things in it that snatched and bit. Call me crazy, but this sounds a lot like the fog that hit the rebel camp and resulted in Padan Fain getting Rand with the SL dagger. This seems to suggest that something more was at work than mere bubbles of evil (if you can call evil rising from the Dark One through the pattern mere anything).

Bubbles of evil supposedly rise from the Dark One with no real purpose in mind. They latch onto the pattern and cause unnatural and harmful effects, but probably not effects intended by anyone in particular. These two effects are remarkably similar, which suggests the work of a person.

Only two people readily spring to mind as possible causes for the carnivorous fog. These are Sammael and Moridin. Both have interests in the Rahad. Sammael was searching for the wise woman cache and probably sent the gholam after Mat (he told Carridin that he would send someone to deal with him). Moridin sent Moghedien to the Rahad on some errand (that's where she was when she tried to BF Nynaeve). Both have been seen in general region of Cairhien and thereabout (I think that the most will agree that the man swathed in fancloth watching Sammael and Graendal is Moridin). Sammael seemed to know about Rand's disablement awfully quickly. However, use of the TP explains why neither Rand nor Cadsuane and Co. didn't sense channeling, and that indicates Moridin, though not disqualifying Big Sam. Perhaps they are working together. It might explain the appearance of the man in Shadar Logoth at the end of CoS. Perhaps Moridin was watching to make sure that Sam's plan work! ed, or perhaps he double-crossed him and was watching to make sure that his plan failed. An any case, such an alliance might explain Sammael's seeming willingness to abandon his own territory.

Other possiblities for an instigator which are possible, though unlikely, include Padan Fain (he's developing powers about which we know very little and the fog sounds a lot like Mashadar. Also, he had every motive for creating something of the sort to get at Rand), Osan'gar (included only because some have speculated that he might be Dashiva or another Asha'man), Mazrim Taim (who IS Demandred and who has promoted to the rank of Asha'man only those who will swear to serve the DO or maybe himself with the possible exception of Dashiva (Taim was very insistant that Rand have an Asha'man advisor and looked irritated, amazed, and, despite himself, somewhat amused at Rand's choice of Dashiva out of all the Asha'man, rather like Demandred would considering his opinion of LTT's incredible luck)), or someone using the Bowl of the Winds (I don't know if anyone had the opportunity).

This is a lot of speculation based on very little information, but I think that it all makes sense.

Hmmm...I had always considered the fog as work of Padan, but now that you mention that fog in the Rahad. If Moridin happen to be following Rand and saw him fighting and losing would he spring up the fog so Rand doesn't ruin any plans and again would he do the same in Shadar Logoth. You have made a great connection here between the two. I would say your most likely candidate as you have pointed out would be Moridin, it make sense. I can't believe I missed the fog thing...cool.
