eparate continents

by Arette Nenatiar: 2001-01-02 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

I have been wondering for a while that did the continents of Randland separate during the Breaking or have they always been apart. The Guide doesn't say a word aboat that.

There are channelers in the main continent, Seanchan and Land of the Madmen so there must have been contacts once.

I don't remember reading a scene from books, that would have mentioned cities that existed on the other continents. But because we don't know the specific places of the cities in the Age of Legends, we can't be sure of it. For example the only thing that's left of Tzora is a glass plate. But that plate isn't in the main continent. If it isn't under the sea, could it be for example in Seanchan?

I don't have any idea aboat this one, but because it has bothered me very long time, I decided to ask your help. Tell me what you think!

Well, we believe that our world's land used to be one...so, since RJ seems to be talking about our world in a different age, then it would make sense that at one time they were one and now they are not...a thought.

I dont think the continents did separate during the breaking. The Athan-Miere took to the seas because they weren't moving like the land was. If the continents were being moved further apart, the sea would have been as much a maelstrom as the lands, so the Athan-Miere would not have fled there. Tzora, I think, is probably the waste. If a blank plate of glass is left, it will easily be covered by dust etc. leaving a barren land. Since glass doesnt create particularly good land for growing stuff, it would create an environment almost like the waste(I think).

The BWB does say, "All overseas travel was by sho-wing," which implies more than one continent in the AOL.

There was a lot of geological change during the breaking -- new mountains and land were there used to be seas and such. When Rand is following the Shaido to Cairhein, there is mention of Docks high on the side of a mountain, and Asmodean comments on the changes.

When consider all of the references to the changes and the breaking -- Shayol Gul used to be an island, etc -- I get an impression that there was a lot of uplift and subsidence, but not much lateral movement of the continental plates.

I cant get a quote on it, but I remember someone saying how the Mountains of Mist was like the Worlds End for the people of Randland and how Arad Doman down to the Shadows Coast was all under water.

I agree with Weird Harold, about the Sho-wing comment, but another thought is maybe they were only connected thinly, causing many inland seas. Just something else to think about. Or maybe there were more non connected contenents, that went underwater like atlantis. You never know, unless Jordan spells it out in simple to understand words that is.
