he Truth About Saidin and the Taint

by Phlaneri: 2002-11-23 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

Premise: The taint is the souls of the Hundred Companions.

The Basis for this theory falls on several notes:

(please for give the spelling. I am terrible at it)

1. We know that Tel'Aran'Rhiod is the home for the departed "heroes" that will be called back to fight the last battle. Yet in that entire number we have no channlers. So as it is not likely that there has ever been a heroic channler in all of time, we have to look elsewhere for where they are. The Source.

2. We know that almost every person who learns to channel in the series at some point does something they did not know how to do. A notable episode being where Egwene ties off a flow of Saidar to keep a ball of light going and then Elayne sees her do it and copies it. Then Egwene learns how to do it from watching Elayne. This sort of thing happens all the time with Rand. Jordan gives us the plausable reason for this being that Rand has the Soul of LTT in him and that's how he does it. But what of the others? All channlers have the feeling that they could "Loose themselves in the flow". I think this is a true reflection of what might happen.

3. The One Power is always described as the essence of life. What if it actually is life. What if the Life energy of the channler gets caught up in the flow of the OP when they are channeling and when the flow of power returns to the source after channeling it takes a little of them back with it. It might contain vague impressions that with several thousand channlers over the history of time would become almost thoughts themselves or at least instint.

4. During the Attack on the Dark One at the end of the AOL we know that the dark ones counter stroke made every man there immediately insane and the rest of the male channelers in the world followed soon after. The Males who were with LTT immediately set about the breaking of the world with the One Power, drawing amounts of epic proportions. In one case drawing so much that when they died the city around them was leveled by the explosion. In another it drove into the earth so hard that a mountain was raised out of the ground (LTT). This would likly be the most extreme uses of Saidin in all of time done by the insane. From Cadsuane we know that many men who go channel start to hear voices right before they go insane. While many crazy people begin to hear voices these men might actually be hearing the thoughts of one or several of the previous male channlers. This would begin to drive anyone insane after a time. This explains anyone going insane after that point. This effect might even grow more pronounced after a time due to the addition of more insane channelers to the mix.

5. The only way this theory would hold water in reference to WH would be that rand actually cured the insanity off the OP by fighting it with the insanity of Shadar Logath. Part of a cathartic healing.

An interesting addition to this theory is based on the theory The Circle of Thirteen - the Forsaken and the Dark One by Caraiaan in the misc theories.

6. Caraiaan supposes that the "True Power" DO's oposite of the "One Power" that the Creator uses. If that is true it might lend weight to my thought that the OP is made of life energy as the TP would almost have to be made of Destruction energy.

Thats my Theory. Let me know what you think.

Well, the first point you make is slightly incorrect. Lews Therin Telamon is a Hero of the Horn and a channeler. But I don't think this necessarily diminishes your idea. Although I have always pictured the power as a separate entity than the soul. We do know that the ability to channel is attached to the soul, so that might lend credence to your theory. Although Rand describes sensing the taint like oil on water, not a mix and the soul idea you are putting forth seems to suggest that it would be more mixed than just a surface covering. Maybe you could explain how that applies to your idea? It seems like we would need to know more about the nature of the taint to really verify what you are suggesting, fun thought, anyone else have comments?

I have just one question about this. It's known that the taint is the DO's counterstroke to the seals. If the DO responded by ripping out the companions souls and leaving them in the OP, why didnt he keep them for himself? He prob would have loved LTT's soul, as then he would know that, come the time his prison is broken again, there is no one to fight him.

Counterpoint to your theory is the books say that the Hundred Companions broke the world so they didnt go insane RIGHT AWAY. It took a while from the taint on saidin.

I hate my ingorence so much now. Ok.... Sorry for any confusion on my part. The surviving Hundred Companions and LTT DID go insane right then and there at Shuy Ghoul. They went nuts, started breakin the world. There numbers got added to by the male Aes Sedai drawing on saidin. Eventually they all died from the Rotting Disease caused by the taint. Ok.... Again, sorry for any confusion. If you want to see that this is true look at The World of Robert Jordans The Wheel of Time on page 82. FORGIVENESS MASTERS!

Callandor, I don't think that that is quite true. Some of the channelers died after they went insane by drawing two much of the power, remember that all the AS warn novices about drawing the power?

And, I think that in the Black Tower, one man died from drawing too much saidin.

And Phlaneri, the destruction energy from the DO is debateable, seeing as that those Chosen that channel it still live.

Oh it is true Therilon. BWB Page 82, Chapter 8, The Breaking of the World:

**Lews Therin and the sixty-eight survivors of the Hundred went insane on the INSTANT, perhaps not even knowing that their attempt to seal the Bore had been successful.** (caps added by me)

LTT his living crew popped a major gasket right then and there at Shayol Ghul and it justwent downhill from then on.

I am NOT saying that if a man channels tainted saidin that he will go nuts instantly, far from it that is from the accumulation of drawing on the taint over a period of time. I am saying that for LTT and his remaining Hundred companions ONLY, that they went crazy instantly.

Here is what I think

I think that the taint is because of the fact that only male channelers sealed the dark one. I think the seal is a lot like a block that someone forms on another channeler. I think that the seal is just a block on the DO. Like when Rand was in the box at Dumnai Wells he stretched THROUGH the barriers and then flexed and shattered each knot. I think this is what the DO is doing with the seals. The Taint wasn't a concious counterstroke by the DO I think that it is just him pushing against the seal. It says somewhere in the series that It helps when a male channeler links with a female. I think that in order to full seal the DO BOTH sides must be used. This way each protects the other and re-enforces the other, preventing the taint. This is supported by the fact that the forsaken have "black threads" on them that blocks the taint. I think it was Samael that described it as the taint rolling off his link to the DO, or something. This shows that to block the taint you need a second power to protect you.

Anyway, there it is.
