ld Man on Barrel is Probably Jain Farstrider

by J.P.: 2001-02-18 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Who is Noal and why is he in Ebou Dar?

If you compare the descriptions of the old man on the barrel and Noal Charin from Winter's Heart (WH), you discover they are nearly the same.

Barrel Man: "It was a scawny, white-haired fellow lounging nearby in the shade. Mat looked at him questioningly, and he grinned, showing gaps in his teeth. His stooped shoulders and sad weathered face did not fit his fine gray coat." (354,ACoS)
Noal: "The speaker was a stoop-shouldered, white-haired old man with a large hooked nose planted in the middle of a sad face with a bundle slung on his back." (355, WH)

Similarities: Both mention stooped shoulders, white hair, and a sad face.

Barrel Man: "The old man tapped a gnarled finger against the side of his beak of a nose. Both looked to have been broken several times." (354, ACoS)
Noal: "He took care with the gnarled hand the other man put in his. It was all knobs, as if every bone had been broken at the same time and had been healed badly." (356, WH)

Similarities: Both mention gnarled hands and the beak nose description of the barrel man matches with the large, hooked nose in the first quote describing Noal.

Barrel Man: "His stooped shoulders and sad weathered face did not fit his fine gray coat. Despite a bit of lace at his neck, he was the very picture of hard times." (354, ACoS)
Noal: "Noal's coat appeared to be of good quality, though, at least in the dim light, and he did have his lace." (359, WH)

Similarities: Both mention good quality coats with lace.

Barrel Man: "...and he grinned, showing gaps in his teeth." (354, ACoS)
Noal: "...he laughed mirthlessly, showing gaps in his teeth. (356, WH)"

Similarities: Both have gaps in their teeth.

Barrel Man: "His hands no longer possessed the strength or flexibility for swordwork, but the two long knives he had carried for well over thirty years had surprised more than one swordsman."
Noal: "He was sliding a very long dagger into a sheath beneath his coat." (355, WH) and "His broken hands had handled that knife well enough" (362, WH)

Similarities: Both use long knives and know how to use them well.

Also, note that Mat seemed to recognize him ("His weathered face looked familiar, somehow, but Mat could not place him." (355, WH))

With all these similarities combined with Mat seeming to recognize him, it is clear that the Barrel Man and Noal Charin are one and the same. Now, why I think Noal is probably Jain Farstrider:

1. The age matches (Noal is old and Jain should be about 70 now)

2. Barrel man has a messed up mind, or at least memory, consistant with the last sighting of Jain Farstrider.

3. Noal "told stories before going to sleep, stories that Harnan and the other Redarms seemed to swallow whole, ever the one about some place called Shibouya, supposedly beyond the Aiel Waste, where women who could chlenld had tattooed faces, over three hundred crimes carried a penalty of death, and giants lived under the mountains, men taller than Ogier, with thir faces on their bellies. He claimed to have been there." (538, WH) If I remember correctly, The Travels of Jain Farstrider had a similar description of the lands beyond the Aiel Waste and Jain Farstrider is the only person known to have gone there and returned.

4. Noal says "I've seen great men laying plans, and villains dark as the Pit of Doom, too." (539, WH) To have seen these thing, Noal would have to be well traveled and probably an important person to know of great people's plans. Jain Farstrider matches this desciption well.

5. Noal is a mysterious character traveling with Mat, and knowing the series, there is probably something important about him.

6. RJ often adds characters by exposing them to one of the main characters in a seemingly unimportant role before they meet with the main character again (ex. Min, first seen in TEOTW, but not a major character until much later on, Aram, Elayne, etc.). The Barrel Man encounter matches this pattern well, and Noal needs something to make him interesting.

Now that it seem Barrel Man= Noal Charin= Jain Farstrider, what does it mean to the story? Noal may act as Mat's advisor and guide. Jain Farstrider's knowledge of lands beyond the Aiel Waste and Graendal's trying to make Sammael look to the lands beyond the Aiel Waste in Threads Woven of Shadow, LoC suggest that eventually something is going to happen in the lands beyond the Aiel Waste, and it is probably going to involve Mat. Also, Seanchan and Shibouya could be close together (the world is round) and traveling to Shibouya could involve Mat's Seanchan troubles. In addition, if any of the main characters goes to Shibouya, as I think one will, it will probably be Mat, since Perrin is busy with the Shaido and Prophet, Rand is always busy, Elanye is busy governing Andor, Nynaeve is with Rand and generally does not go anywhere by herself, Min wouldn't want to leave Rand in the condition he is in after WH, and Egwene is busy with the power struggle in the White Tower. Mat !
is the only free character, and also will be pursued due to his kidnapping of the Daughter of the Nine Moons.

In summary, I believe the Barrel Man is Noal Charin who is Jain Farstrider. I think he will advise and guide Mat in a trip to the lands beyond the Aiel Waste.

I had to include yours, even though most people believe him to be Jain Farstrider, because you developed your theory so well. Others could learn from your example.

Now that is a cool idea I had not heard, going to Shara. Although, RJ has said that he may make a quick mention about it but he won't go into Shara in length so it would seem impossible to send a ta'veren there without spending a good amount of time there.

I agree that Noal is one or the other, but I don't think he could be both the barrel man and Farstrider. I have always believed that he was Farstider, but the amount of evidence you have given is changing my mind. There are far too many similarities between Noal and barrelman, compared to between Noal and Farstrider.

Thank you for this, as it has changed my perspective.

What you didn't put into the theory, was that the Barrel man was watching the two Black Ajah and trying to figure out what they were doing. Farstrider was known for capturing at least one Darkfriend.

Plus, according to Ishy, Farstrider was hounded by the Shadow. If I remember correctly, he was pursued by Ishy himself. Something like that would tend to make a guy want revenge against the Shadow. He could have been watching the two BA sisters because he happened to recognize their actions as what they truely are, evil.

Good job on this theory. I myself have always been conviced as the three always being one and the same, especially since he has a fogged memory. That can happen after a lot of torture. Thumbs up!!!

I have never liked the Noal=Jain Farstrider because I always assumed he was the barrel man (similarities and timely appearance by Mat side after checking him up in the street). Plus, I have always assumed man-in-the-barrel was a darkfriend or at least that was my impression when I read man-in-the-barrel first appearance. He seem to be following the black under orders from smbody (forsaken, I assumed). That, and the gholam, and he knew too much about the darkfriends internal hierarchy, and just the timely appearance.

**Plus, I have always assumed man-in-the-barrel was a darkfriend or at least that was my impression when I read man-in-the-barrel first appearance.**

Don't know how you got that impression then. Should re-read A Crown of Swords, Chapter 17, The Triumph of Logic. The word Darkfriend or Shadow or anything of the like isn't even mentioned in the section for Noal; it's just that we know that he is watching the house where Falion and Ispan are staying, which undoubtly makes the goldsmith who truely owns it a Darkfriend. Noal is of course trying to remember something important and refers to not having much time.

**He seem to be following the black under orders from smbody (forsaken, I assumed). That, and the gholam, and he knew too much about the darkfriends internal hierarchy, and just the timely appearance.**

Why he's following them is quite vague. He doesn't mention orders -- just little time left. He could easily be following them of his own accord.

And what about the gholam is suspicious? He didn't even know anything about it (by all accounts) until Birgitte explained it to him in Winter's Heart.

And what hierarchy? He mentions Carridin and knowledge about Mili Skane but that's it. He doesn't mention Falion and Ispan, we just know he's watching them (but he does know they are Aes Sedai). It's hardly knowledge of the hierarchy, and can easily be knowledge he's accumulated by simply watching Carridin and Falion and Ispan.

I believe you are confusing the old Barrel man that is undoubtedly Farstrider, with the one-eyed Darkfriend who poses as a begger named Old Cully (the one who attacks Mat later on in A Crown of Swords).

And there is of course the sinking possibility that Farstrider is a Darkfriend, or under orders from a Forsaken.

The Foz: 2009-11-29

I think this theory is right on the money and in one of the later books Noal says he is Farstrider's cousin, which is clearly an attempt to cover up a slip he made in talking about Jain Farstrider. I would develop the theory further though. I would make the leap to stating that Noal/Jaim Farstrider can channel. The knarled old hands and dexterity of the man do not match up and sounds all too like "Mirror of the Mists" disguise work to me. It also makes a lot of sense that Farstrider could channel, and of course could Travel. I would speculate that Noal/Farstrider will be of importance to the story before the end. I don't think he is a DF or a Forsaken, although he may be being manipulated by a Forsaken. If I was to make a wild guess, I would say that Noal is an Aes Sedai from the Age of Legends, perhaps one of the Hundred Companions who also ended up trapped in SG along with the Forsaken. In The Gathering Storm, Rand/Lews Therin muses about one of the Hundred Companions who was caught in the blast that sealed the DO's prison. I can't recall the name that was dropped, but it did mention that this charachter was a master of research, and in the making of Terangreal in particular. My guess is that Noal is this person, released before the Forsaken from the DO prison, and who has been instrumental in the sruggle against the blight ever since, has been hopping from Stedding to Stedding to lessen the affect of the taint but has been unable to avoid becoming at least partially mad. I seem to recall there is mention in the EOTW of a mysterious and very unwell who took refuge in Stedding Shantai, who I believe to be Jaim Farstrider, who was being hunted by Ishy at the time.
