An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

ady in Blue: Who are you?

by Antalya: 2001-02-20 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Moiraine: Where is She Now?

In Winter's Heart, Elayne sees a woman with dark hair and a blue (cloak I think) heading into a shop with a bag.A woman with an, "ageless face." While Elayne concedes that it could be a woman who ages well like Zaida, could it be... that wonderful Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, Moiraine Damodred?!

While she might have to be "rescued", as other people have theorized, (many of those theories seem pretty good!) why can't such a strong-willed woman escape "Finnland" on her own? Why isn't she in action? Well, Moiraine is pretty crafty-perhaps she wants to assess the situation first. And who says she isn't in action? You never know with her. Of course, I might be reading too much into a casual encounter, but it would be Jordanesque to include someone like that, whether she has significance or not, just to yank our chains and rattle our brains.

Hey, I don't write the books-I just read them!

I re-read the book a week ago and noticed that reference and thought that it could be Moiraine. I agree, this idea that she needs Thom to rescue her from finnland is ridiculous. Moiraine knows ten times as much about these worlds than Thom would. She is capable of making a deal and Lanfear and Mat were both kicked out of their land, so why keep Moiraine?

Well...

If Elayne didn't recognize her, why do we think this is Moiraine? If she was in a new body, why would dark hair or an ageless face matter?

The rescue idea comes from the vision of Thom pullin Moiraine's blue stone from a fire. We know she's with the Finn, and we know music... Thom's specialty... is a Finn weakness.

This one is simpler than you're trying to make it.

To counter the Elayne not recognizing Moraine thing - They (did/may have) met in the Stone of Tear, but it was never mentioned that they spent as much time together as others. As a result, Elayne wouldn't have been able to recognize Moraine

It could easily have been Marillin Gemalphin, who is sighted around Caemlyn repeatedly from LoC onwards - The Aes Sedai who helps cats, the woman the Saldaean cannot put and age to, the woman entering the shop - It goes on until we start getting the PoV of Daved Hanlon, who works for the same person as Marillin.

Aside from the fact that Elayne never spent much time around Moiraine, she was pretty preoccupied at the time, if I remember correctly. Also, why couldn't Moiraine have woven a subtle illusion around her face to alter her features slightly?

While it's possible that Moiraine could have woven Illusion, or the Mask of Mirrors, to disguise herself, I don't think she did. IMHO, I don't think she knows the weave. That particular weave is something that Moghedien teaches to the girls, and apparently no one else (that we know of) knows how to weave it. Also, wasn't the AS working with Hanlon for Lady Shiane Falion, not Marillin? I thought Marillin was with Temaile and the others.

I read most of the previous posts, so I apologize if anything is redundant.

At this point we're not sure if Moiraine is dead or alive. We do know that the doorway melted and her bond to Lan is no longer there. There are probably numerous reasons as to what happened, but I put forth that she was severed from the source when the doorway melted (as was Lanfear).

Now what would she wish for?

1. To be able to channel again (maybe even with more power than before)

2. To have knowledge to equal or best the AS of the AOL.

3. To leave? Probably not. I think her third would be something else because I don't think that she new that through this door you had to negotiate your exit before your wishes. She most likely wished to be alive long enough to be at the LB and is being kept alive in Finn'land so that she is alive long enough but unable to get there without help.

She could very well be "held" as Lanfear was, or the lady in blue. RAFO ;)

I think Arbryans reasoning is sound enough, but I don't really think so. Why would Moiraine(Or Lanfear) burn out just because the doorway melted?. I think Moiraine is Alive, probably in finnland, and coincidently I think Lanfear died at the hands of the Finn. I know all that "held" stuff is used to prove that they didn't kill her but really if you had to think of your own death, and had an Ego like Lanfear - you would not for one second admit to having been killed. I would still think that Thom has to enter finn land and CHEAT them - that is the thing Thom does as well as Moiraine(deasdeamar is bisicaly deception which in turn is cheating)

I think that Jordan would have been a bit more obvious than this. As someone said before, there were other Aes Sedai in the city, and the quote seems a little too obscure for my liking. It is definitely possible, but I will wait for another hint before I start dancing with excitement that Moiraine is alive.
