eaching Towards the World Again

Previous Categories: The Dark One's Touch

If you follow the pattern from the earlier books, the Dark One seems to always be focusing his personal efforts towards a Major Project. First it was to lock the seasons in winter. When the Green Man put a stop to that, the Dark One shifted gears and stopped the seasons in the eternal summer. It took the heroes awhile, but they eventually fixed things with the Bowl of the Winds. With the seasons moving naturally on to spring now, it seems likely that the Dark One has begun to focus his efforts somewhere else, and it stands to reason that the next Project should be even better than those before due to his increased freedom. My guess is that his new Major Project is the ghost phonomenon.

Although it seems fairly innocuous so far, the seasons locking weren't a big deal at first either, so we might just be seeing the tip of the iceberg here. Who knows, by the middle of next book, there could be all sorts of specral sightings from Saldea to Shara. If Rand decides to do something about it, I just hope he remembers the perils associated with "crossing the streams" that he learned about in Shadar Logoth with his and Moridin's balefire bolts.

This idea seems to be gaining some momentum around Theoryland from various users. While I think it is apparent that the DO is able to touch the world more "fully", I don't know that the ghosts are something "evil". Someone says that a ghost attacked, but so far, the ones that we have point of views of, are simply spectral viewings of soul like beings walking around. What is the purpose you would propose of this new Project of the DO's?

When the DO locked the seasons, it didn't seem evil at first either. In fact, people were probably pretty happy at the beginning of the last summer since they'd had such a rough winter. If the ghostly phonomenon continues to grow, we'd see a lot more towns like So Harbor, which seems like a fairly sizable place, become abanonded, weevil-infested shells of their former selves.

Not only are the people in the town just a bit rattled to say the least, but I'd imagine that the economics of the area aren't doing all that great now either. If a large number of additional locations suffer the same effect then it would pose more problems for a world already ravaged by war and civil strife in nearly every nation. Of course, if the ghosts do start getting hostile in the next book, that could make it even worse. According to the guide, the DO wore down the populace by infecting their emotions and culture for years before striking, and this could simply be a part of that softening up process. That the DO likes to use mental warfare just as much as physical can be seen by the fact that over half the Foresaken specialized in that sort of thing.

In TLoC, the DO wanted to "Let the Lord of Chaos Rule." This could simply be a continuation of that; I think having dead relatives walking around your house might cause a little bit of chaos, especially if the ghosts are hostile.

On the other hand, the ghosts could be something Fain is doing, or it could be a sort of new Shadar Logoth; the dead walking reminds me of TEotW when Rand, Mat and Perrin were in Shadar Logoth, and of the illusion that Fain created when he attacked Rand in Winter's Heart.

Something caught my attention. in the whitecloak camp at the begining of cot. valda smells something really bad, but can't locate the source of the odor. then all of the sudden, it is gone. I wonder if this might be an effect of the dark one?

I believe it was pointed out that this smell was a clue to the fact that somebody opened a gateway to or from the blight... meaning that a forsaken is with valda's troops
