An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

laida's foretelling

by kyuss: 2003-03-01 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Prophecies, Foretellings, and Talents

I'm an avid WOT fan and am starting my third read-through of the series. I've been reading theoryland for a while, but haven't posted much.

Anyway, I haven't seen anything about this b4, but apologies if it's been mentioned: Elaida foresaw herself presiding over the destruction of the Black Tower. However, I remember that when I read the foretelling in the first place, it seemed vague and open to interpretation. I'll have to check the quotes, but something tells me the Black Tower will continue to flourish (as Taim predicted). Perhaps Elaida will destroy the white tower.

Sorry that I don't have the answer per se, but what do you all think her foretelling means? Will she destroy the Black Tower, the White Tower? The most liekly explanation, given the cleansing of Saidin, is that the Towers will merge and work together - the clues are there - and this could be the answer. However, if I recall her foretelling involved the BT in flames.

I welcome your thoughts

Thanks for your input Kyuss. It would be very useful (and necessary to really break it down) to have those quotes. But if I remember correctly, Elaida's foretelling speaks of Aes Sedai walking the grounds and that the Black Tower would be destroyed (as in the area that is the Black Tower.) The sisters walking the grounds can easily be interpreted as those who are already there as captives. The destruction is most likely going to occur between factions within the Black Tower. Elaida's assumptions concerning the interpretation of her own foretelling are notoriously incorrect and bloated.

Yes Tamyrlin, and the next part of the Foretelling is that the Dragon shall feel the Amyrlin's wrath and kneel before her... or something like that- of course, this refers to Egwene, not Elaida.

"The White Tower will be whole again, except for remnants cast out and scorned, whole and stronger than ever. Rand al'Thor will face the Amyrlin Seat and know her anger. The Black Tower will be rent in blood and fire, and sisters will walk its grounds. This I Foretell." ACoS Prologue.

With the current BA hunt going on in the White tower, i would asume that that is the "remnants cast out and scorned", and the solidification of the Rebels and the towers Aes sedai would be the " The White Tower will be whole again...whole and stronger than ever".

As to the Black Tower, i belive that it will be Taim's faction vs. Logain's faction that cause the tower to be "rent in blood and fire", and the part about the sisters walking the grounds refers only to the bonded Aes Sedai that Logain's follers have.

The expelled people I always wanted it to be the Red Ajah and the Black but I would settle for the Black too.

The sisters walking definately is a reference to the bonded sisters, but I think its something more later on like the combining of the White Tower and the Black Towers due to the clensing of the taint on saidin and Ewgenes order to ask a truce with the Ashaman.

i dont think that casting out the black ajah fits. i would much prefer executing the evil skanks, before i would lose them on the world. though maybe a binding, that they can never work directly or indirectly to free the dark one. and can only use the one power in defense of life and against shadow spawn. must use the op to help random peeps, and whatever else you wanted to throw in for fun. like making them wear livery.

Could "remnants cast out and scorned" refer to the implementation of Egwene's plan to allow Sisters to "retire" into the Kin? Technically such Sisters would be "cast out" of the Tower and given the prevailing Aes Sedai attitudes toward all other channelling traditions, I'm certain that they would be subjected to a certain amount of scorn.

Even a binding wouldn't make the Blacks safe--the oaths can be removed. Does anyone know if the same rod the oath was taken on must be used to release the oath? Maybe that's why they're numbered.

A BRILLIANT IDEA!!! make them swear on the oath rod, never to remove their oaths. If they tried it would either be impossible or kill them... how fun!

Hmm, that sounds like fun. Though maybe I'd do,

"I will never knowingly aid the Dark One in any way whatsoever.

"I will only use the One Power against shadowspawn, by the loosest definition of the word.

"I will speak not one word that isn't true.

"I will never make a weapon for a man or woman to use against another man or woman.

"I will do a random good deed at least twice a day unless physically unable.

"I will never remove these oaths, and even if by some accident it happens, I will still abide by them.

"I will follow the spirit of these oaths and not just the letter."

Then you can add, say, two other fun ones. With nine oaths, those bloody BA will be dyin' pretty soon!

And good riddance!!!!!

"I will never remove these oaths, and even if by some accident it happens, I will still abide by them. "

the second part of this one won't work for the simple reason that if the oaths are removed, they're gone and nothing can make you keep them except your own good will.
