An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

he Grey Power

by Shadow Bane: 2003-06-21 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Padan Fain

Now for as long as the Wheel of time has turned there have been two constant powers. The first, the Creator, is the 'good' being. The second is the Dark One who is the 'bad' being from which all evil stems.

Every age the DO and Creator fight with one another using champions like the Dragon (We know this from the many quotes of the Dragon fighting the DO times without number). But in this turning of the Wheel something unexpected happened.

Now for the purpose of this theory I will call the DO's power the 'black' power and the creators the 'white' power. White and black have fought for ever and there was never a medium (gray). But with this turning of the Wheel a new evil TOTALLY SEPERATE from the DO's evil was created. This new evil, Shadar Logoth, is unprecedented. There has never been another evil ever before so the pattern doesn't quite know what to do about it.

I believe this new evil is the greater of the the two existing evils because-

1)ALL beings used to fear Shadar Logoth even Halfmen and such

2)Fain/Mordeth can control df's

3)Fain/Mordeth was able to control the Machin Shin a creature of the taint- thereby making it a creature of the DO (the taint is the DO's residue)

This new evil is the grey power neither black nor white. Now peculiarly Fain is a **fusion** of the two evils. He seems to be getting the best powers of both.
ecause this has never happened before Fain will be the being to represent the grey power, the same way the creator does the white and the DO the dark. Fain is unlikely to ally with either Rand or the forsaken because he hates both so at TG he will most likely lead his own Force to attack both sides. If this theory is true(and i am assuming it is for now) Then TG will not be a battle between Rand and the DO it will be a battle between Rand, the DO and Fain.

I know there is a theory out there that fain will become the next DO, but I dont think this is probable because Fain is of a different Power. Fain will become a new constant, or Fains evil will become a new constant in Randland. I don't see why this isn't possible but you probably will so let me know what you think I want to find out what holes I have left in this theory.

I don't know that you can make a case that Padan Fain is a mix of both powers. He is a different black power. The minions of the DO's black power fear him and his power because he and it can steal their souls, and they will be lost to all other powers. I agree that Fain will play an important part in the end, and his evil may continue on into the next age, establishing itself. Maybe the next age is a battle in which the DO and Creator join to destroy your "grey" and my "other black" power. But I think you are jumping the gun on saying that Fain's power has never existed. If the Pattern repeats itself, and has for an unknown period of time, and if the "grey" power, as we know, was something that came from the hearts of men, why isn't it likely that Aridhol has happened in another Age or another turning, and then just been destroyed in the process of Age changes?

Dont forget the third constant - T'A'R.

Fains powers are unique because the match he has become a form of man made evil which means he cannot be a constant. P.S grammar eat your heart out - you get the drift.

Fain is special for THIS Age alone, RJ said so. So, I take that to be 2 things:

1) Fain wont become a new power, but will play a key roll.

2) He will die in this Age.

Shadow Bane: 2003-06-27

But do you think TG could be Fain vs. DO vs. Rand?

5

Callandor: 2003-06-28

Not LITERALLY vs. the DO, but he wont be going totally against Rand. He still hates the DO.

Now we know for interviews that RJ wrote part of the EotW as a tribute to Tolkien. Now in the LotR there were tree main characters. Frodo, Golem, and the Dark Lord Sauron. Now I presume that must people who are reading this series have read the LotR.

In the WoT series we have three main focus point characters; the Dragon Reborn, Fain and DO. Here is how I imagine the LB will happen. Rand will fight the DO or its avatar and will start to lose. Right before the final victory Fain will interfere and the reaction between Fain's evil and the DO's will be the catalyst for the resealing of the Bore.

Shadar Logoth's evil was very effective in combating the taint. Why not use the same trick twice? Using the evil of the DO vs the evil of Fain might be the key for Rand to win.

Perrinshammer-

A very interesting idea you should right a theory it has potential. A lot of people see Fain as the Gollum character so it is quite possible.

SL evil is not in medium position between th black and the white powers to be "grey power". Why SL not being only another part of the Dark Power? I think Fain?Mordeth is evidence that Shayol Ghul and the whole domain of the Nae'blis are not the only part of the dark power. The bubbles of the evil are anothed evidence for it.

Considering Tolkien analogy: Fain/Mordeth is not plainly Gollum. Maybe Gollum+Shellob and more Shellob then Gollum.

Murrin: 2003-11-03

Fain also has elements of Saruman, in that Saruman wants to oppose Barad Dur (joining with Sauron was just a backup in case he couldn't get the ring for himself), as well as opposing the good guys. Fain is like this because he is an independant evil, opposing the Shadow while also abandoning the Light.
