An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

ina and the others

Previous Categories: The Young Sitters

I'm on my second time through the series, already on CoT again, and something hit me between the eyes. In Winter's Heart, we find out that Elyas Machera is indeed bonded, to an Aes Sedai named Rina. She keeps her bond masked so neither of them know where the other is, but he is still bonded. Then, in the prologue of CoT, we find out that one of the young sitters, the one chosen by the Green Captain-General or whatever, is an Aes Sedai named Rina, who is too young for the post. Now, this is just a hunch, but perhaps the young sitters are all connected in some way to a talent or gift that none of the others have. Of course, assuming this is the same Rina, that leaves us with only one option to go by, having her warder be a wolf-brother. But then again, we don't have any more idea why they would be hand-picked by the heads in BOTH the rebels AND the tower. That's starting to freak me out.

I hadn't noted the connection between Rina and Elyas...but I am not sure that we should come to believe that it has anything to do with the Young Sitters...although, if something happens to her, I wonder what Elyas would do, or if she unmasked the bond.

Don't think we've been introduced to enough talents/special features to assign one to each of the young sitters, or if there were, we'd have seen said abilities/special features far earlier in the series. Also, Rina could be a shortened form of his Aes Sedai's name, thus not necessarily the same Sister.

Actually, i dont know what book or where, but somewhere i think it said that Verin used the nickname Rina.

Ve-Rin-a. And we know her last warder died 10 years ago, who's to say she didnt bond a new one, she never said she didn't. only that she still grieves for her old warder.

And who better than a brown to bond a wolf-brother, (lets see what happens now) and We know Verin is strange and has alot of tricks up her sleeve (Compulsion and masking bond) would also explain how she knew Perrin was a wolf-brother right off the bat, and why she knew about the choice of Axe and Hammer. Elyas wolf-brother, Tel'Aran'rhiod, Coriannin's ter'angreal ring, and Dreamers. All fits together really well if you ask me.

**All fits together really well if you ask me.**

Except for the fact that Elayas says he is bonded to Rina, and we have a Green Ajah Aes Sedai in the Tower, named Rina.

**TITLE: Path of Daggers, CHAPTER: 10 - Changes

The older man waited until they were a dozen paces from the tents before he replied, and even then, he spoke quietly, as though he suspected someone behind them might have ears as good as theirs. "One who knows my name will be bad enough. Warders don't run off often, boy. Most Aes Sedai will free a man who really wants to go—most will—and anyway, she can track you down however far you run if she decides to hunt. But any sister who finds a renegade will spend her idle moments making him wish he'd never been born." He shivered slightly. His smell was not fear, but anticipation of pain. "Then she'll turn him over to his own Aes Sedai to drive the lesson home. A man's never quite the same after that." At the edge of the slope, he looked back. Masuri did seem to be trying to kill the carpet, focusing all her rage on attempting to beat a hole through it. Elyas shivered again, though. "Worse thing would be to run into Rina. I'd rather be caught in a forest fire with both legs broken."

"Rina's your Aes Sedai? But how could you run into her? The bond lets you know where she is." That nudged something in Perrin's memory, but whatever it was melted away at Elyas' reply. "A fair number can fuzz the bond, in a manner of speaking. Maybe they all can. You don't know much more than she's still alive, and I know that anyway, because I haven't gone crazy." Elyas saw the question on his face and barked a laugh. "Light, man, a sister's flesh-and-blood, too. Most are. Think about it. Would you want somebody inside your head while you cuddled up with a likely wench? Sorry; I forgot you were married, now. No offense meant. I was surprised to hear you'd married a Saldaean, though."**

**TITLE: Crossroads of Twilight, CHAPTER: 21 - A Mark

All three Green Sitters were there, indicating very strong support among their Ajah, or heavy pressure from the head of the Green. As senior, Talene should have answered Elaida - Greens stuck to their hierarchies in everything - but the tall, golden-haired woman glanced at Yukiri for some reason, then just as oddly, at Doesine, and put her eyes on the carpet and stood plucking at her green silk skirts. Rina frowned faintly, wrinkling her upturned nose in puzzlement, but she had worn the shawl for fewer than fifty years, so it was left to Rubinde to reply. A sturdy woman, Rubinde appeared short and stocky alongside Talene, and almost plain despite eyes the color of sapphires.**

It makes MUCH more sense for Rina to be another person then for her to be Verin.

**Actually, i dont know what book or where, but somewhere i think it said that Verin used the nickname Rina.**

And Verin's alias is Eadwina, not Rina.

Arien Sedai: 2003-12-13

If Verin is Rena, why wouldn't Elyas have told Perrin her full name? Also, it's likely that Perrin mentioned Verin in Elyas's hearing at least once.

7

WinespringBrother: 2003-12-14

The main obstacle to Elyas being Verin's warder is that she is a brown, and browns only take one warder at a time. Verin's only warder is Tomas. But Rina, being green, can take other warders and let Elyas run around.

8

natas: 2003-12-14

I've always thought Rina was a black sister, and that's why Elyas ran away from her. Can't remember where, but there was a Green/Black sister telling of fuzzing the bond between her three warders, and the warders were tracking her. It didn't matter about one of them though, because that particular warder was a darkfriend also.

9

Zaela Sedai: 2003-12-14

It took her ten years to bond Tomas, she's been with him much longer than that. Most AS don't bond old warders. (with the exception of Asha'man)

TITLE: Lord of Chaos, CHAPTER: 11 - Lessons and Teachers

Verin watched her for a few moments before speaking. It had taken her ten years to get over Balinor's death and bond Tomas "

I don't think there is any way Verin is Rina, for one everyone would no it because of Elyas calling her it and second she's not green which means one warder.

10

Dorindha: 2003-12-15

And, Verin does have a warder - Tomas.

11

Cor Shan: 2003-12-15

Well, aside from the fact that it is obviously wrong, but still -

Wouldn't a warder running off count as his dieing to a sister? Or his loss of warder status?

12

WinespringBrother: 2003-12-16

Apparently not, Cor Shan. Elyas has mentioned his being a Warder and mentioned escaping being gentled too many times for this to not become a major issue at some point in the future. Maybe he will sense something happening to Rina and go nuts or something, or clue Perrin in on violence at the White Tower through the bond, and they will travel there. That could get the plot moving again.

13

Deadsy: 2003-12-16

Interesting Winespring. I wonder if her being made damane could stop her from being able to mask the bond. Or perhaps she just would stop masking it because she wouldn't care anymore. (Just thinking of the Seanchan attack).

14

Cor Shan: 2003-12-16

I meant for the bonding issue. Like if Jane Sedia of the White Ajah's Gaidin ran off, would she be able to bond another? I think she would be able too if no other sisters knew about it, but, if any others knew, they would have others find out somehow, resulting in a birching. (I doubt it would be a stilling offence)

15

Zaela Sedai: 2003-12-18

Cor-

Sisters CAN bond as many warders as they like, but only the green WILL bond more than one. It's all custom. And knowing AS I don't think any would bond another warder unless theirs died (except the greens of course)It's the whole custom thing.

I definately agree that Rina will play into this somehow, Elyas wouldn't have mentioned her otherwise.

16

rubbernilly: 2003-12-19

Elyas ran off because his wolfbrother-nature was asserting itself and the AS suspected him of being a darkfriend.

Unless Rina was one of those AS that wanted him killed, I think that there would still be some loyalty there from his end. I look forward to a day when they might reconcile.

About masking the bond if an AS is made damane... we see what it is to mask the bond when Elayne, Avi, and Min bond Rand. Imagine the sense of the other person in your head wrapped up in a handkerchief, tie it off, and the sense of them is significantly dulled.

Now, Min could not manage the feet, and Min cannot channel. However damane can still channel, still have that piece of them. They just have an object that allows someone else when and how they channel. I think that the damane could mask the bond...

...I was about to say that a stilled AS could not mask the bond, but that is silly since the bond is broken when they are stilled.

On damane AS masking their bonds with their warders... why would they want to do that? Wouldn't they want to be rescued? And, getting back to Rina, even if she and Elyas were at odds over his leaving, if he were her only hope at rescue from the Seanchan, I think that very quickly everything would become water under the bridge between them.
