    Interview: Dec, 2010

    T.T.

    5. Is Hoid a Herald, or a Shardholder, or something else entirely.

    6. Was the letter posted on the top of chapters to Sazed?

    7. Barring the Almighty, did we seen a Shardholder (like Sazed) in this book?

    Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads)

    5. Hoid is something else entirely.

    6. It is written to a character who exists outside of Roshar. I won't yet say who.

    7. I think "Shardholder" would get confusing alongside "Shardbearer." Basically, in the Cosmere's terms, when someone holds a Shard of Adonalsium, I call that person a Shard of Adonalsium. They are imbued with the power of that Shard, but they also become the Shard. Fans can use whatever terminology they wish, but this is how I term it.

You did at least see the direct effects of two of the Shards of Adonalsium, but I won't say whether or not you actually saw a Shard of Adonalsium.

    Interview: 2011

    atheistcanuck (21 Mar 2011)

The Almighty's original name was Tanavast, yes/no?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

Yes and no. The concept of the "Almighty" in Roshar has a lot of meanings, many of them wrong.

    ATHEISTCANUCK

But the person who held the Shard Honor was originally named Tanavast?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Yes. You wiggled it out of me. That was the name of the original holder of the Shard Honor

What is the name of the Shard which is the Almighty?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Ah... RAFO!

    Footnote

It's Honor, and the original person holding the shard is Tanavast.

    Google+ Hangout (Verbatim)

    Andrea Digney

    Was Honor Splintered?

    Brandon Sanderson

Was Honor Splintered? ooh someone's been paying attention, very much. I would say that yes Honor was Splintered. That is a very important question to be asking, someone really knows their stuff.

    Interview: Sep 22nd, 2012

    Zas

So the number of Shards that have been on Roshar is three, correct?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Correct.

    Zas

People have been thrown by you saying that Odium is not native to Roshar.

    Brandon

Odium is not native, that's the thing. Are any of them native? So if you dig the deeper question, are any of them native, ehhh, none of them are native to the planets you've seen so far. What I probably should've said to be more precise is that Honor and Cultivation were there long before Odium showed up.

    Interview: Mar 17th, 2012

    Question

A question related to that. There’s an idea going around that all the spren that can Nahel Bond, all Knight Radiant spren are called honorspren, and then Nohadon talks specifically about honorspren. Is that the case? You know, is it just the Windrunner spren, or is it all the spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m going to deal with this in the next book. So I’ll just go ahead and let it be a literal RAFO. It is coming.

(interruption, leading Brandon to lose his train of thought)

So what we are dealing with here is that all Spren are indeed all pieces of the one who has gone, so those spren are all- except the Windrunner spren, the spren like Syl, have certain umm.

    ZAS

Nohadon mentioned that "All the spren aren’t as discerning as honorspren."

    BRANDON SANDERSON

So there has been dissension among them about who gets to call themselves honorspren, if that makes sense, and there is some disagreement among scholars about which ones are really, you know "This is what defines an honorspren".

But the spren you are running into are all (something) of either Honor or Cultivation, or some mixture between them. And you can usually tell the ones that are more Honor, and the ones that are more Cultivation. That should be able to be (something).

    Interview: Oct 1st, 2013

    Question

None of the Heralds mention or address the Almighty in the opening scene of The Way of Kings; it's a little strange, considering they are his champions. Have they seen or spoken to the Almighty?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, the Heralds have spoken with the Almighty. They also feel that what has been done to them is partially his fault.

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2013

    Wetlander

Did the Splintering happen before the Recreance?

    Brandon Sanderson

I will reveal this as we go. However, be aware that in the past, when a Shard was killed, the person holding it, it is a slow burn to actually kill someone; because power cannot be destroyed. So, what it means to be killed means something a little different in these cases.

    hoser

    Did Tanavast survive Honor's splintering?

    Brandon Sanderson

Tanavast is dead. Good question. However, that is as of the start of The Way of Kings.

    hoser

So he could have survived the Splintering...

    Brandon Sanderson

He could have survived the Splintering.

    hoser

    ...as a mortal...

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, he could have survived for a time, but then he could not have then...

    hoser

    ...passed away in his sleep...

    Brandon Sanderson

    Right.

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2013

    Wetlander

Was Odium able to Splinter Honor because the Heralds abandoned the Oathpact?

    Brandon Sanderson

Good question. Um, their abandonment of the Oathpact is related... but mostly tangentially. If I was pinned down on that, I would say no.

    Wetlander

Is there any of the Oathpact still functioning because of Taln's continued participation?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, indeed.

    Interview: Aug 9th, 2014

    Khyrindor

Hoid went through Cultivation's Shardpool to get to Roshar as opposed to Honor's. Yet, he notes he never got along well with Cultivation. Why did he choose her Shardpool rather than Honor's?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

    You're making assumptions!

(I asked if it's possible that it was Honor's and he said it's possible.)

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Brandon talked about something he called "Honor's purposes" or maybe "Honor's Purposes," and how they are the reason 10 is such a holy and dominant number - I assumed it meant Honor has (had) 10 of those Purposes. It was heavily implied in the conversation that Odium, if he has similar Purposes, does not have 10 of them.

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question ()

How many parties were there to the original Oathpact?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds and Honor. They thought that by walking away from their oaths, that it would break the Oathpact. They're going to find out that it's not quite as broken as they had previously thought (meaning the Heralds).

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    EHyde

So I'm just gonna run with that right now. Is Surgebinding in general a melding of Honor and Odium ala Feruchemy being in some senses being not directly of Ruin or Preservation?

    Brandon Sanderson

Honor and Cultivation is what you mean? Um, there are spren of all three shards. And those spren can work within the bounds of the magic that has already been set up on Roshar.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Question

I am very convinced that Adolin, with the events that happen with the last book. You’re sending him down a like a dark path. Is he possibly going to be a-- Antagonist(?) protagonist(?)-- A bad, eventually? Or is he--

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m going to say this, the things that Adolin did do not contradict some of the moralities on Roshar, in fact they follow them directly. Some of the moralities on our planet would say what he did is the right thing to do. I think treating it as a “dark path” is too reductionist to say. There are people who would seriously argue, and they would have a good argument, that what Dalinar was doing by leaving Sadeas around was a good idea. And then there are other people who would say “You know what Sadeas did was a challenge and it was rightly then responded to” and then there are people who would say it was absolutely immoral. So, it depends on your philosophy. What would Honor say? Well, Honor’s dead, so-- *lots of laughter* You know Honor would not have been behind that action, but Honor’s dead.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

If another Shard came to Scadrial, would that be enough to create a godmetal?

    Brandon Sanderson

If another shard just came to visit, probably not.

    Question

If they brought a spren or-

    Brandon Sanderson

If they came and completely Invested the world, then things might start happening. But there's some special circumstances, remember. Ruin and Preservation created that planet. Specifically. And so there's some goofy things that happened because of that. For instance Roshar was not made by Honor, Cultivation, or Odium. That's one of the big differences about what's going on there.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

What Shard is the opposite of Odium in the sense of the [board? Borg?]

    Brandon Sanderson

There are several that could be considered opposite--

    Question

I mean in the assimilation sense, you’ve said that Odium doesn’t want to absorb any of the other ones but which one would want to?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, which one would want to join with him?

    Question

    Or any of them.

    Brandon Sanderson

*pause* I think that *long pause/picks up after next question* I think that if personalities had been different, Honor and Odium, there would have been a very natural pairing, not that they’re opposites but they would have attracted.

    Interview: Feb 16th, 2016

    little wilson

You mentioned that "half-ish" of the existing Shards are whole at the time of Shadows of Self. Is that counting splinters?

    Brandon Sanderson

No. Splintered is one of the ways they are not considered whole. (He's thinking about Dominion and Devotion and says that's the opposite of whole)

    little wilson

I was thinking about shattered versus splintered, and going with shattered with Devotion and Dominion. And then splintered would be Honor separating a piece of himself to create the spren (pre-Shattering).

    Brandon Sanderson

On Scadrial, Ruin and Preservation did the same thing. Their bodies are part of the world. Things on the spiritual realm don't matter where they are in relation to each other. All those spren are still Honor, when he was alive. Does that make sense? Yes, they're splinters of Honor, but they're still Honor. It's not like he's diminished, because his whole essence is the world. There's no diminishing that. So we're talking about the fracturing of the mind and killing of the Shard. That's the distinction between whole and not whole.

    little wilson

Are there any Shards we don't know of that are Shattered?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. (Zas' sister says "Four....ish...right?") Eh....Honor is gone. Devotion and Dominion are gone. There are others. The question is is Cultivation gone or not? I haven't answered that for you. There are others. So this is why I'm not going to give you answers on this.

    Nashan'Elin

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

Can Honor spren, or any other type of Knight Radiant spren, be evil?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, because I don't call the shards good and evil. There are no good and evil shards in my opinion, like and so, what evil and what's not evil can totally have spren of honor that you would consider evil. They have free will, but they are much more limited. It is very hard, or impossible, for them to lie but they can be cruel.

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

Is it normal for people to become connected to an area after being there for a bit, like with Kel and wherever he was when he found the Ire, or is something special going on?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is normal for a cognitive shadow to get stuck to places, because they exist through investiture it is normal for them to get tied to an area. Kelsier was still in Scadrial when he found the Ire. This happened with Odium and the two shards on Roshar, Preservation to Ruin, and the Heralds (To Roshar? Braize?). (I think this is basically what happens with shards when they invest on a planet, so this same thing happens at smaller levels than shards.)

    Footnote

(After about an hour and a half he started answering more questions, so I sat nearby and wrote the gist of the questions and answers he was getting. Thsi next part is going to be paraphrased, but fairly accurate. It wasn't as rapid fire as it had been, as I and other people didn't want to keep interruption him while he was playing magic.)

    Interview: Jun 11th, 2016

    Barnes and Noble YA (Paraphrased)

    Question

Another interesting thing I heard was when he was explaining a little about the secret organizations to a young lady who was a fairly new fan.

    Brandon Sanderson

I didn’t hear the exact question, but Brandon spoke with certainty when he said that Amaram and Gavilar were Sons of Honor. I had taken Gavilar’s involvement with a grain of salt to this point. He also said that we know the most about their purpose–to return the Voidbringers as a means of making the Heralds return–and they they were the “most wrong.” He said that we can pretty much infer the purposes of the diagram group through the epigraphs and text. He said we basically don’t know anything about the Ghostbloods’ purposes. (which matches what Mraize told Shallan. I am very excited to find out more about them and if they know Hoid)

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

Is it possible that someone could have gotten to the Cognitive Realm on Scadrial without the Well of Ascension?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Question

    ...Can we know how?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, how many Shardpools would Scadrial have?

    Question

Two, so the Pits of Hathsin would be so?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. So you’ve adopted the term “Shardpool.” That was never really my term, but I’ve started using it. What happens with a Perpendicularity is large concentrations of Investiture, particularly purely attuned to one of the Shards, will create an access point. You’ve seen another one--

    Question

    Yeah, yeah I know these.

    Brandon Sanderson

You know which one I’m referencing?

    Question

    Yes.

    Brandon Sanderson

That you didn’t see a Pool from?

    Question

    Oh wait… [Laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, he knows, so… We’ll move on.

    Question

    Why??!! [general protest, laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, fine. Umm, at the end of Words of Radiance.

    Argent

There has to be one there because Jasnah has to leave somehow, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, but Honor’s Perpendicularity moves.

    Question

    Woah...so...Highstorm?

    Brandon Sanderson

    [hems and haws]

    Question

So, I don’t know if this is a RAFO sort of question, but you call them Perpendicularities, will we see this sort of thing created?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, Perpendicularities can be created. You’d need a ton of Investiture. But, basically what Jasnah does is create a little mini Perpendicularity and slips herself into the Cognitive Realm.

    Question

So it’s just a question of skill, not a question of--

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. It’s hard to pull off...but some of the powers are built to do it.

    Question

    Brandon Sanderson

She is still there. Alive and kicking.

    Question

And she can probably know how to not turn her back to the--
