    Interview: Jan 10th, 2011

    Dylan Huebner ()

Would it be effective/efficient to make Awakened machines? That is to say, could one make a crossbow or catapult that fires itself, or a wooden cog that perpetually turns?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

There is a country that does that.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Chaos

A lerasium Mistborn's kids would surely be Allomancers. If such a lerasium Mistborn traveled to, say, Nalthis, fell in love and had kids with a native Nalthisean, would those kids be Allomancers? Or something else?

    Brandon Sanderson

In most cases, they would still be Allomancers. Mixed, potentially, with something else depending on the native innate investiture. That mixture could do some strange things, though.

    Interview: May 17th, 2013

    Kogiopsis

What would life on Nalthis be like for someone with synesthesia?

    Brandon Sanderson

Synesthesia on Nalthis isn't something he's considered, but it would probably be about the same unless you had a lot of Breath, at which point things would get weird.

    Footnote

Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia; from the Ancient Greek σύν syn, "together", and αἴσθησις aisthēsis, "sensation") is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.[1][2][3][4] People who report a lifelong history of such experiences are known as synesthetes.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Windrunner

Did people exist on Nalthis prior to Endowment's arrival there?

    Brandon Sanderson

Some planets had people before the shattering.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Link389

Are there any other shards on Nalthis aside from Endowment

    Brandon Sanderson

I suppose I can answer this if I haven't already. No, it is only Endowment.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    rags

If I used a hemalurgic spike charged with allomantic powers on a person on say Nalthis, will the focus of allomancy change because the power is being used on another planet?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Stroniax

Can people from one are of the cosmere Ruturn to the place from the cosmere where Awakeners are from (forgot the name)?

    Brandon Sanderson

Meaning, can they travel to Nalthis, where Warbreaker takes place? Yes, they can.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Stroniax

Is there a way to harvest BioChromatic Breath from a planet, if it holds any? (If a person dies, and their body turns to dusty he dust of the earth, then doesn't the earth--or sharever planet they have--therefore hold thousands, if not millions, of BioChromatic Breaths?)

    Brandon Sanderson

Possible. It would be the same thing as harvesting the nature of Preservation or Ruin, which--on Scadrial--took the form of nuggets of metal.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    llwvyn

My question is in regards to the writing system. In Warbreaker, when Siri is teaching Susebron to read, she mentions the letter "shash," which we now know better as a Glyphair from WoK.

    so onto the questions:

Are the two writing systems related, or is this a chance coincidence of names? If they are related, did they stem from the same source? (i.e., do the people of Nalthis and Roshar both descend from a more ancient group of people?) If I haven't gotten a RAFO yet, did the separation from these other people create the legends of being cast out of the Tranquiline Halls?

    Brandon Sanderson

There are interesting connections around the cosmere between linguistics and some cultures. Though different groups of humans were created on different planets, the Shards all share a single point of origin. However, the Tranquiline Halls legends are not related to a Nalthis/Roshar connection.

    Interview: Jan 8th, 2015

    fletchershair

How long has Odium been on Roshar?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

He couldn't say for sure without getting out the timeline, but a LONG time.

    fletchershair

Has he been on Scadrial or Nalthis?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

No, but he is aware of their existence.

    Interview: Aug 6th, 2014

    BlackYeti

Did he [Vasher] actually come from Nalthis and not Roshar?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m not going to actually answer that one. Well I can answer that: yes he does come from Nalthis. It’s pretty obvious that the way that the Breath’s working, the reason he moved is because it’s easier to get Stormlight than Breaths, and Stormlight can fuel being a Returned like him. And so yes, he was born on Nalthis. Becoming Returned without being born on Nalthis would be really hard.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

We’ve seen the Cognitive Realm now on Roshar, with the spheres, and on Scadrial with the mists, but what does it look like on Nalthis and Sel?

    Brandon Sanderson

That is a big FAT RAFO.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

I kind of envision the Old Magic working a little bit like Hemalurgy, where some-- takes a part of the Physical DNA of the person and transmutes it onto the Cognitive DNA because everything seems to be a Cognitive shift for the person, am I thinking along the right lines?

    Brandon Sanderson

You are thinking along very-- Yes you are thinking along the right lines. I won’t tell you exactly but you are thinking along the right lines.

    Question

And then the curse Kelek’s Breath, is that a clue as to the origin of some of the Heralds?

    Brandon Sanderson

Erm… Explain why you think it might be.

    Question

    Uh, well, Warbreaker--

    Brandon Sanderson

    Mmhmm

    Question

    The use of Breath…

    Brandon Sanderson

    Uhuh

    Question

It seems like they have similar strength to somebody who has extra Endowment

    Brandon Sanderson

    Okay.

    Question

So I’m wondering if they come from-- I can’t remember the name..

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds-- You’re wondering if the Heralds come from Nalthis?

    Question

    Yeah.

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds do not come from Nalthis, but that is an excellent question.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2016

    Question

Have we seen the world mirrored by the Expanse of Broken Sky?

    Brandon Sanderson

(long grunting and contemplation) I’m not answering that, RAFO

    Question

What does First of the Sun look like on the Cognitive Realm? I think it’s a whole bunch of grubs, or worms.

    Brandon Sanderson

RAFO, c’mon you know I’m not gonna reveal Cognitive Realm on the other ones.

    Question

    The Expanse of Vibrance… Nalthis?

    Brandon Sanderson

(more grunting) You would be making a good guess, if you said that. That’s an informed guess.

    Argent

That’s not an answer, keep pushing.

    Question

Is the only reason that Yolen is not reachable, according to Khriss, because it doesn’t have any sentience on it thinking of it as a planet, so it doesn’t appear in the Cognitive?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ahh, no. Good question, but no.

    Interview: Nov 22nd, 2016

    BYU Bookstore (Paraphrased)

    Question

In the signing line, I asked him what would have been included in a hypothetical Nalthian essay had there been one.

    Brandon Sanderson

He said it would have talked about how close the scholars there were to being Cosmere aware, and how they knew more than anyone who wasn't a worldhopper. He also said he would have given clues to where the pool was. Also, he wrote "Are you listening?" In my book, although I have no idea what was meant by that.
