    1. What's the schedule on when Reckoners parts 2 and 3 be released?
    2. What are your plans for the Mistborn universe? More specific, will there be a sequel to The Alloy of Law? Will there be Mistborn books taking place in a further future society, with respect to Alloy of Law?

    Brandon Sanderson

    1) Two is in January. Three hasn't been set yet. We'll see when I finish it.
    2) Yes, there will be a sequel, probably next fall. And yes, we will eventually go further into the future.

    What influenced your characters in Steelheart? Comic books? Specific ones?

    I’ve read a lot of comics. Watchman influences everyone. Kingdom Come - one of first that really made me think about comics. The original Turtles. Graphic novels (self contained) like the Killing Joke.

    He is based on an author. Q: It’s Jim Butcher, right? B: I couldn’t say if it were, with these handsome locks and wearing a trenchcoat, and the goatee. Q: It’s totally Jim Butcher. B: Well Jim Butcher doesn’t have hair like this anymore. He cut his hair.

    So my friend wanted me to ask you, after we both read Firefight, is there anything you can say about Instabam? Powers or anything.

    See facetiously in my head I had Instabam have power over instant potatoes, but I’m probably not going to do that. But that is what I had in my head when I wrote that name. Yeah, instant potatoes “Poom” can cook food at the snap of fingers. I don’t know what their powers are. I didn’t work that out. You can say instant potatoes if you want.

    In /The Reckoners/, was there a particular power that I gave to someone because I just thought that power was cool.

    And yeah, the tensors. They can turn things to dust. For years I’d been walking around looking at our society where we have all this metal and this wood around, and things like that. I just loved the idea of just being able to turn it to dust. Maybe it’s like a “reducing things to their more primal state” or whatever-- but anyway it was one of those magics that was in my head for a while. And really superheros are magic. I don’t pretend that they’re science fiction, they’re magic. So I just designed these magics that feel cool to me.

    In Firefight you said Obliteration-- he wasn’t an ordinary Epic, he was a force of nature. Why did you say that?

    It was in David’s voice, and that is kind of how he views it. It’s not necessarily true, it is what he viewed.

    Well they think it is because Edmund is a Gifter and isn’t using his powers directly. That’s their philosophy on it. Whether that is true or not remains yet to be seen.

    And are there established trade routes between Epic-controlled areas? Are they patrolled by Epics?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes. Umm, yes to an extent. For the most part you know that if you hit an Epic’s trade caravan you’re all dead, y’know? So they don’t have to worry about it that much. But some are patrolled. Not by the Epics, but by their people.

    Where did you get the idea for the Reckoners series?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Where did I get the idea for writing the Reckoners series? I almost got in a car wreck. I was driving to a book signing and I was late and somebody cut me off in traffic. And it was like-- I had to slam on the brakes and things like that and I thought-- At that moment I’m like “You, person in front of me, are so lucky I don’t have superpowers, ‘cause if I did I would blow your car up right now. BOOM” It’s a great Michael Bay effect, like it explodes and I drive through the smoke. It was really awesome I remember it. And then I was immediately horrified, right? I’m like “Here I write all these books about people protecting the world with their powers and what would I do if I had them? I’d be blowing up people because they inconvenience me.” *laughter* And this is where the series came from, I thought about that the entire rest of the drive, which was about another hour. And I thought “What if-- What could we do if people just started manifesting superpowers and-- You couldn’t throw them in prison, or if you did they’d just break out. You couldn’t defeat them with the armies. What would the society do if there were legitimately superpowered individuals?” It’s kind of the same tactic that Watchmen took, if you’ve ever read that, but it kind of goes the other direction with “They are all evil, what do we do?” That was the origin and I wrote a whole book series about it.

    Why would you choose Chicago as a setting?

    Brandon Sanderson

    I grew up in Nebraska, Lincoln, and Chicago was the big city we would travel to. I liked that it was-- This is kind of going to sound weird but it was a big city full of mid-westerners. Like when I went to LA everyone talked and acted different, when I went to New York everyone talked and acted different, but in Chicago it-- they were kind of like a bunch of hokey mid-westerners had somehow built a big city? *laughter* If that makes any sense. So I have always had a fondness for Chicago. It’s like the big city of farmers or whatnot. I don’t know there’s just something about it, the being on the lake and the profile of it and things like that. And I’m a Batman fan and Gotham is Chicago. Chicago was my go-to when I was going to destroy a city in our world; I picked Chicago.

    I just got through the signing line. Since it was a mile long, I only asked about the Reckoners.

    Brandon Sanderson

    The ratio of Epics to normal folks is about 1 in 10,000. Brandon then clarified, without prompting, that was pre-Calamity population and the ratio is much higher now because so many normal people died. He then gave an example of Newcago, which has about 1000 Epics in a population of 250,000, so in that particular case the ratio is 1:250. (He didn't say, but I'd expect that to vary from place to place depending on the local politics.)

    Some did, some didn't. For example, Canada didn't… and things didn't go very well for them.

    Were the areas where they didn't livable?

    Well, livable is a broad definition. For some people, Newcago is livable.

    What happened with Abraham’s court marshal?

    So, that is backstory that is also a RAFO. Why Abraham was there is not something that he likes to talk about. It’s not that he’s shy, but at the same time it’s not something that he easily talks about, so I will not talk about it. I will let him someday, perhaps, talk about it.

    Do we get to find out eventually where Calamity comes from?

    Eventually, like the next trilogy I do will dig into that... You've got to remember, in the teen books I’m not going to dig into lore as much, they're written as action novels. So in the next series I'll get you some of your answers, but that's not what the point of these books-- like The Stormlight Archive, the point is the lore. In these books, the point is “have fun”. So you will, but it's going to take a little bit longer.

    It came from me writing a bad metaphor on accident, and then being like, "I'm going to run with this and see where it goes." I like it [as a character quirk] for David because his personality is that he's a little overzealous about things, and so trying so hard on the metaphors is a great way to express that.

    So for Calamity, like about these others that you mentioned, are we ever going to figure that out? Or--

    Oh yeah, so the next series I’m doing deals with the greater-- sort of interdimensional travel and who are these people.

    Okay good, because I was like “You can’t leave me like this” at the very end. I really like how it was put together and stuff. My own theories were that David was, his powers were figuring out Epics’ weaknesses—

    Brandon Sanderson

    I considered that, I really did. At the end of the day, when I brainstormed the trilogy I said you know what would be most fun for me in this series is to do a trilogy that is basically an origin story for a character and then when I come back to The Reckoners, if I do, because the next one’s a parallel dimension, right?

    From where Firefight is? Or another--

    Brandon Sanderson

    That-- We will get into why certain ones are stable and certain ones aren’t and why Megan can pull from and we’ll do something there with a new character. And if I come back, then Mizzy will be the main character in the sequel series.

    Does that make sense? That’s where the plan for this is, we’ll see how the new series goes, they’re announcing it next week. And the entirety of the magic system is based on interdimensional stuff.

    So it’s kind of like Megan has opened up this idea of a quantum multiverse, and now I’m going to do a quantum multiverse which is not something I can deal with in the cosmere so it’s exciting for me to be able to do it.

    Yeah ‘cause the first one we see about the others I was like […] this is not the cosmere.

    Not cosmere. Going straight-up quantum multiverse, in kind of a classical sense. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on string theory and things. It’s so hard, string theory breaks my brain. Quantum mechanics break my brain, but they’re fun.
