An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

The Bell Tolls

2012-04-24: Some thoughts I had during JordanCon4 and the upcoming conclusion of "The Wheel of Time."

    Interview: 2010

    Felix Pax (10 August 2010)

One of Tuon's Conflicts, is will she 'protect' the Tinkers from harm and keep her word? Or is Tuon loyal to the a'dam?

    Brandon Sanderson (10 August 2010)

Tuon is loyal, so far, to the a'dam. In her mind, leashing Tinkers who could channel would be 'protecting' them.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Now, how that might change based on interactions with Aes Sedai—and the true secret of sul'dam—is still uncertain.

    Interview: 2010

    Luckers (12 August 2010)

Is it possible to force someone (a learner) to start channeling?

    Brandon Sanderson (13 August 2010)

Almost anything is possible, under the right circumstances.

    Interview: Jan 14th, 1997

    Thomas Howard

Why couldn't Moghedien escape the leash with the True Power?

I'm just going to quote the whole response to this:

    Robert Jordan

"The a'dam would perceive any [emphasis mine] power use and treat it accordingly."

    THOMAS HOWARD

I don't know about you, but this seems to support the idea that one must be able to channel the One Power in order to use the True Power.

    Footnote

In case it isn't obvious, the Domination Band is not just a 'male a'dam'—there are several fundamental differences that we already knew about before The Gathering Storm.

    Ted Herman

Will a'dam work in a stedding?

    Robert Jordan

    Read and find out.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

Can a damane who has been burned out or stilled continue to be controlled by the a'dam?

    Robert Jordan

    No.

    Interview: Sep 2nd, 2005

    Isabel

Then I couldn't hear any other questions and I went back in line. I could only ask him one question. It's a discussion we had on Theoryland a while ago. Can the a'dam hold every sul'dam?

(He managed to get my question after a few times repeating it. I'll leave that out). Frenzy, you were right. (I hope I remember your stand on this issue correctly.)

    Robert Jordan

The a'dam can only hold sul'dam who have been sul'dam for a long time and so wearing the bracelet for a long time. Four months for example isn't enough. He said the circle helped them get to the point that's described in the book, as being on the brink of being able to channel, one foot stepped over or something. (Quotemasters, please find that quote for me.)

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2009

    Samadai

The last question I asked was, will Elaida be able to withhold Traveling from the Seanchan?

    Brandon Sanderson

He gave us another look, and with a smirk said, "I will say that is going to be an onscreen RAFO."

Right after saying that he said. "Let me ask you this, Do any of you believe Elaida has the will to resist the a'dam? We all said 'No' right away, he gave us a smirk and shrugged his arms.

Now although that wasn't a definitive statement, done with his body language, it damn near locked it up.

    Interview: Nov 15th, 2009

    Question

Mr. Jordan stated that the Seanchan only know how to make one kind of ter'angreal. Then there are the Bloodknives' rings. Is this a departure from Jordan's notes, or a discrepancy in a past answer?

    Brandon Sanderson

Neither. The Seanchan only know how to make a'dam.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2010

    Ted Herman

Can a Dreamer access Tel'aran'rhiod if trapped by an a'dam?

    Brandon Sanderson

At first, Brandon said yes, but then he qualified that with 90% chance of yes.

    Footnote

In 2013, Maria stated that there was nothing in the notes on this, but she believes one cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while collared.

    Interview: Aug 31st, 2011

    Reddit AMA 2011 (Verbatim)

    Ted Herman ()

Does the a'dam only work when the collar is worn around the neck?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, so far as I know.

    Interview: Oct 15th, 2011

    Ted Herman

Would an a'dam function in Far Madding?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, but the damane could not channel.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

How did Egwene easily break free from the a'dam placed upon her in Tel'aran'rhiod by Mesaana when the a'dam placed upon Moghedien (a mistress of Tel'aran'rhiod) was so effective?

    Brandon Sanderson

This got Brandon thinking hard but he RAFO'd it in the end but he did say 'are you a Theorylander?' which did make us laugh. :)

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

In Towers of Midnight in Egwene’s confrontation with Mesaana, how was Egwene able to override the a’dam when Moghedien had so spectacularly failed to do so earlier?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon accused me of being a Theorylander then thought for a bit. He explained that, while the answer might not give anything away, he was loath to go into detail in case it could be used to work out other things yet to come. So, regretfully, he gave it a RAFO.

    Interview: 2012

    Twitter 2012 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Andrew Harrington (23 January 2012)

How do the a'dam circumvent the Aes Sedai oaths to force them to channel against non-Shadow, i.e. Whitecloaks?

    Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2012)

I don't think the a'dam can. However, if the Aes Sedai believes that the person is a Darkfriend, they can channel against them.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

So conditioning their mind right, can do it. (The oaths have a provision for Darkfriends, though some editions left this out.)

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Luckers

Can someone who is leashed by an a'dam touch Tel'aran'rhiod?

    Brandon Sanderson

*blinks at me* Umm. That's a really good question.

    Luckers

I ask, because it's odd that Moghedien never tried to use the dream to escape, or to capture someone in Salidar and compel her to free Moghedien in the waking world, or anything like that.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, that's a good question. I'd guess no, but you can MAFO that.

    Maria Simons

I believe that you cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while leashed, but I can't find anything in the notes that states so outright.

    Footnote

When Brandon was first asked this question in 2010, he said "90% yes". In 2013 (after Luckers' 2012 interview), he said it was "not outside the realm of possibility". Maria answered the question later in 2013.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson

He would not confirm the Seanchan have the tech necessary to make cuendillar, or if ter'angreal copying would skip the need to also make the copied item into cuendillar. He did say: "If the Seanchan had the knowledge of how to make cuendillar, don't you think we would have seen it by now?"

    Interview: Feb 9th, 2013

    KiManiak

While collared, would Moghedien be able to use her dreamwalking abilities to compel a sul'dam or someone else to release her from the collar?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon answered (paraphrasing again) that that is not outside the realm of possibility.

    Footnote

In 2013, Maria stated that there was nothing in the notes on this, but she believes one cannot touch Tel'aran'rhiod while collared.

    Interview: Apr 20th, 2013

    Terez

So, sul'dam usually have to tell the damane what to do, but Tuon doesn't have to do that when we see her in Knife of Dreams...is that a matter of Talent, skill...something else? So it's like, you know, after they work with the Power for a while, they can see the weaves, right? Is it kind of along the same lines? After a while you don't actually have to tell the damane what to do; you can do it yourself through the damane?

    Maria Simons

That would be my assumption. I don't know it positively.
