An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

    Interview: 2010

    Matt Williams (8 November 2010)

Was the fog in A Crown of Swords during the fight between Toram Riatin and Rand a bubble of evil or did Fain control the fog?

    Brandon Sanderson (8 November 2010)

    RAFO.

    Footnote

The glossary entry for Daved Hanlon in TPOD says that it was a bubble of evil.

    Interview: Nov 10th, 2000

    Question

Have you ever seen "Army of Darkness"? There's a scene in there where Ash (the protagonist) smashes the mirror and mini dopplegangers come out of each shard.

    Robert Jordan

No. When did the movie come out?

    Footnote

Army of Darkness was released on October 9, 1992...and The Shadow Rising was released on September 15, 1992. Looks like both parties are innocent (not that most fans of WoT would have minded if RJ had referenced the movie).

    Interview: Oct 6th, 2005

    Robert Jordan

For Phil Reborn, the wind that makes Rand almost impale himself on Lan's practice sword was one of the first bubbles of evil. A tiny one, but still dangerous.

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2011

    Question

How about Padan Fain and his talents?

    Alan Romanczuk

He acquired his talents when he merged with Mordeth, who [paraphrased a bit] got his from research and sucked the souls from his victims.

    Question

Was Padan Fain behind the killer fog in the Rahad?

    Alan Romanczuk

    What do you think? LOL

    Footnote

We don't have any particular reason to think Fain was in Ebou Dar at that time.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2011

    Wetlandernw

Is there a distinction between the "bubbles of evil" and the "Pattern unraveling" events?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is a distinction, in that they are different manifestations of the same root cause: the bubbles come from the Dark One's prison and slide along the threads of the Pattern until they pop, while the Pattern unraveling is a result of balefire as well as the Dark One's direct influence. The "torn lace" icon is used for both.

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    JordanCon 2012 - Terez (Paraphrased)

Maria told an interesting story about a cockroach infestation in the carriage house, which she says inspired the bubble of evil in The Gathering Storm.

    Interview: Jan 10th, 2013

    Question

Where did the idea for the zombies come from?

    Brandon Sanderson

Are you speaking of Hinderstap? (Questioner explains further.) ...Yes you're speaking of Hinsderstap. Hinderstap came out of working with bubbles of evil and things like this, and Harriet saying to me at one point, "The book’s not creepy enough." [laughter] She said, "Go read..."—she gave me the scene with the dead rat from early—is it Eye of the World, that has that scene, where they're in the dreams, and things?—she's like, "Get me some more creepy. It's supposed to be getting worse and worse." And so I'm like, "Alright, creepy it is." And that was where it came from.

    Harriet McDougal

Thus is the nature of inspiration.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Question

    Who was Hinderstap?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hinderstap was me, that was one of my additions. Entered in because Harriet actually said, we need things to be scarier, it's the end of the world. Come up with some really cool bubbles of evil, Brandon. And here are some examples of things that Robert Jordan came up with. Be freaky. And I did my best.
