    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Luckers (10 January 2011)

I wonder if Whitebridge is made of spinglass. Does anyone have an answer?

    TEREZ

I always took 'spinglass' to be a WoT way of saying 'spun glass'. Very fragile. Also...

    TEREZ

'The man opened his mouth to protest as citizens always did; they seemed to think Aiel were made of spinglass'.

    TEREZ

Obviously fragile is what he's getting at. Now, if you could do it like cuendillar...that's different.

    TEREZ

Per Moghedien I get the impression there are many forms of cuendillar. Maybe iron is easiest.

    LUCKERS

That's a good point—I missed the spinglass = fragile reference. As for cuendillar... perhaps.

    LUCKERS

There is an argument in the same vein towards Callandor being cuendillar.

    TEREZ

Well, people argued Callandor=cuendillar because it stopped balefire. But if Perrin can do it... :)

    LUCKERS

There was also Osan'gar's comment during the cleansing that though the Choedan Kal would be destroyed...

    LUCKERS

... he'd still have Callandor. Of course he could have meant to balefire Rand and attack Narishma. Still, weird.

    KRIT PETTY

Callandor is the most powerful sa'angreal without the Choedan Kal. He might just be noting the fact.

    LUCKERS

It's the expectation that he would have Callandor after he balefired the hill which is significant.

    TEREZ

He didn't say he was going to balefire the whole hill. Elza got his hill, though. ;)

    TEREZ

Strongest Rand could manage with fat man was man-thick. He could sweep it, but it's not necessary.

    LUCKERS

I did make that point, but it's weird, risking Narishma's response to the attack.

    LUCKERS

Rand was distracted, why not kill Narishma first, then Rand. Also Osan'gar links the balefire to...

    LUCKERS

    ... Rand's death—"But still, he could take Callandor after al'Thor was dead."—as if it's a result.

    TEREZ

I read it as him seeing Rand as the only real threat.

    LUCKERS

Which is weird, in itself. Callandor circle responding to reversed webs—a scary, and impossible thing for someone from the Age of Legends.

    TEREZ

True, but he might have figured out the ter'angreal thing like Demandred, and he was at point blank range (for balefire).

    RUTH HINCKLEY

So if the cuendillar Egwene makes is white, why are the seals half black? Saidin-made? Different type of cuendillar?

    TEREZ

re: black/white, I always figured this was why Elayne couldn't get the colors right with the stone ring (no man).

    Brandon Sanderson (10 January 2011)

@WoTLuckers @Lironah @Terez27 Now that's an interesting conversation. Re: cuendillar.

    TEREZ

lol, now I get to catalog the whole conversation because Brandon said it was interesting.

    Interview: Jun 27th, 1996

    AOL Chat 1 (Verbatim)

    Ellisande

Cuendillar grows stronger when the One Power is directed into it, but can the One Power be drawn out of it, causing it to break?

    Robert Jordan

Read and find out! :) That's something I may or may not use in a future book, but it's information that I don't want you to have yet. And that's the reason why I say "Read and find out" when I say it. :)

    Footnote

Later hints suggest that it is the True Power causing the seals to break.

    Interview: Jun 27th, 1996

    AOL Chat 1 (Verbatim)

    LewsTher1

What was the process through which cuendillar was made?

    Robert Jordan

Entirely too complex for me to go into here. If there's anyone out there who can channel on the level of a Forsaken I would be happy to enter into a correspondence with them on the making of cuendillar. :)

    Interview: Jan 16th, 2003

    Michael Martin

What happens to a piece of heartstone if a gateway is opened across it?

    Robert Jordan

Heartstone is pushed aside, gateway remains intact. (He appeared fairly amused by this one.)

    Interview: Jan 27th, 2003

    Réal Heppelle

I asked him why Egwene would want to change an iron chain into cuendillar (making sure that I pronounced it correctly CWAINDEEYAR :) I thought he would send me packing if I made a pronounciation mistake). I understood that the chain prevented enemy boats from entering Tar Valon, but I wasn't sure why she would want to make it indestructible.

    Robert Jordan

He responded that iron doesn't TURN into cuendillar, iron is the base of cuendillar. He said that the links of the chain fuse together and become a solid piece. Thus making the chain impossible to raise, lower, or remove. This prevents boats from entering AND leaving Tar Valon. It then became obvious that this was a way for Egwene to successfully siege the island without using the One Power on anyone (as Lord Gareth wanted). I don't know why I didn't realize this on my own, but thought others might want the additional insight.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

Why did turning the Tar Valon harbor chains to cuendillar help? You would think a chain made of cuendillar would be flexible because it is in separate pieces.

    Robert Jordan

No, as I showed you in one of the scenes where they are learning to make cuendillar. They had two items touch each other when they were turning it into cuendillar and they fused to one another, so what you have is a series of chains where each link is fused to the next, so in essence what you have is one solid piece of cuendillar.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

Are the Aes Sedai ever going to try to use cuendillar to make it into armor? Since they can't make weapons, does that restriction extend to making armor?

    Robert Jordan

    Read and Find Out.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2005

    Isabel

Will Nynaeve be able to make cuendillar?

    Robert Jordan

I doubt it, it is as much talent as it is strength. And I don't think she has that talent.

    Isabel

    And can men make cuendillar?

    Robert Jordan

Yes. But they wont use the same weaves the women use, so they will have to figure out how to do it themselves unless they can get it from one of the male Forsaken, if he happens to know it. It is an oddity that Moghedien even knew how to do this, it's just her fascination with things that are valuable.

    Interview: Oct 17th, 2005

    Mad Cao

As far as I know, only one person other than myself asked a plot related question. That question was if it would be possible to complete the cuendillar chain on the south(?) harbor.

    Robert Jordan

RJ answered that the joining chain link (which would not yet be cuendillar) would have to be closed around the existing chain and then turned to heartstone, but the new link could not be touching the old at the start of the change.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2009

    Question

Was the Domination Band made of cuendillar?

    Brandon Sanderson

The original one is made of cuendillar. The one that was destroyed was a copy, but one would assume that the copies are made of cuendillar, too. The True Power works by destroying the Pattern. Everything that is done with it involves damage to the Pattern. For example, when we see Ishamael Travel, he does so by poking a hole in the Pattern. Cuendillar can be destroyed using the True Power. There is another way to destroy cuendillar, too.

    Footnote

Brandon said in another interview that the second way cuendillar can be destroyed is by the unraveling Pattern.

    Interview: Jun 10th, 2010

    Luckers

On the issue of cuendillar. It is stated that the One Power makes it stronger. Brandon said there is another way besides the True Power. Were the [people in the] Age of Legends aware of this, and is this why they could equate the relative strength of something indestructible?

    Maria Simons

    And an encyclopedia.

    Footnote

(Maria's answer is a continuation of her theme in the previous two questions.)

    Interview: Jul 16th, 2011

    herid

I asked him whether the second method to destroy cuendillar (the first is True Power) can be figured out based on available info and the laws of the world of WoT.

    Brandon Sanderson

He said he doesn't think so but that the method is such that when/if we see it we should feel that it does conform to the rules of the WoT universe. Unfortunately, I can't recall his exact wording but I don't think the way he said implied that we would definitely see it happen.

    Footnote

Brandon said that the second way to destroy cuendillar is by weakening the Pattern. (The first way is with the True Power, as we saw in The Gathering Storm.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2011

    forkroot

If cuendillar is brought into Tel'aran'rhiod, can it be destroyed in a nightmare (the same way Perrin destroyed the dreamspike)?

    Brandon Sanderson

If you were strong enough in Tel'aran'rhiod, you could probably force it to break, but it would remanifest itself pretty quickly. (He compared it to how Perrin was able to force Hopper back together for a moment, but no more—it snapped back to "reality" pretty fast.) RJ was pretty strong on this point—it's really, really hard to destroy the stuff. Even an opening gateway wouldn't do it—either the edge would push the cuendillar object out of the way, or the object would block the gateway from opening or closing. (You could actually block a gateway open by sticking a piece of cuendillar in it.) RJ was firm: there are only two ways for cuendillar to be destroyed: the Pattern unraveling, and... one other thing. (From the way he said "one other thing" I think we'll be learning about it in A Memory of Light. He enjoyed that question too.)

    Footnote

Brandon said in another interview that the second way to destroy cuendillar is with the True Power.

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Ted Herman (14 November 2011)

Would a keeping weave protect the seals on the Dark One's prison?

    Brandon Sanderson (14 November 2011)

    No, it would not.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Question

Do the Seanchan know how to make cuendillar?

    Brandon Sanderson

You're trying to figure out if the collar Semirhage put on Rand is cuendillar. (this was a long convo so I can't remember all of it... I THINK he said the original had been made of cuendillar, and that the Seanchan had copies of it, but would not answer whether those were made of cuendillar as well. He wouldn't say if Rand was wearing a copy or the original, he said it didn't matter. And that he knew of at least two ways to destroy cuendillar—The True Power and one other way. He looked thoughtful when Muirenn mentioned the theory that women make white cuendillar and men make black cuendillar, but wouldn't confirm or deny.)

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Aubree Pham

    From dinner re: balefire philosophy:

Talked to Brandon at the Stormleader dinner last night. He had a few things to say on this topic:

    Brandon Sanderson

    1. The bruises on Min's neck were not an error. After consulting with Team Jordan, it was determined that indirect effects remain. Rand was the one who strangled Min, not Semirhage directly, so the bruises stayed.

    2. Brandon knows of two ways to destroy cuendillar. But he would not confirm if the Domination Band that Rand was wearing was made from cuendillar. He said it was not relevant to what happened.

    3. The bracelets did not disappear when Semirhage and Elza were balefired because they were not considered to be intrinsic to their person. It would be the same if someone was holding a book and was balefired, the book would drop to the floor.

    Footnote

Moghedien said the Domination Band was a form of cuendillar, and the assumption is that Rand was able to destroy it because he used the True Power.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson

He would not confirm the Seanchan have the tech necessary to make cuendillar, or if ter'angreal copying would skip the need to also make the copied item into cuendillar. He did say: "If the Seanchan had the knowledge of how to make cuendillar, don't you think we would have seen it by now?"

    Interview: Feb 12th, 2013

    Wetlander

Since balefire strengthens cuendillar, what effect would Egwene's opposing "Flame of Tar Valon" weave have?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Good question!

    Wetlander

(But then we got interrupted and didn't come back to it, so if someone is curious, they could try again and get the rest of the answer. Related questions might be... Would Egwene's weave strengthen cuendillar simply because it is the One Power? If for every weave there is an opposite weave, could there be a weave that would turn the Tar Valon harbor chains back to iron?)

    Interview: Feb 19th, 2013

    Question

Why did we not see cuendillar made into chain mail or shields?

    Brandon Sanderson

BWS does not know if something like this was ever done at some point in the history of WoT.
