    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Erica Sadun

What was going on in Aelfland when Mat went round and round and round the same location? Were they traveling in time?

    Robert Jordan

Not traveling in time. The physical laws of nature differ. Mentioning the Dark One [in Randland] is bad luck. In Aelfland, it is *REALLY* bad. You cannot go to Aelfland in Tel'aran'rhiod (similar to stedding).

    Interview: Mar, 2000

    Paul Ward

Possible question: Why did the ter'angreal doorway burn down when Lanfear and Moiraine passed through?

    Robert Jordan

When Moiraine and Lanfear went through the ter'angreal, it burned in part because both were channeling, and the world on the other side of the doorway has a radically different set of natural laws. The odd optical effects witnessed in that other world are not artificially produced artifacts. (complete answer)

    Paul Ward

The laws for channeling are different on the other side of the doorway...interesting.

Do the Finns inhabit a perpendicular world?

    Robert Jordan

No, it is a parallel world.

    Ted Herman

Does the physical location of the world of Finns have anything to do with the bells ringing when the ta'veren were in together?

    Robert Jordan

    No.

    Ted Herman

Have the Finns existed as long as the Wheel?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Ted Herman

    Do they have souls?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Ted Herman

Are the Finns from human stock?

    Robert Jordan

    No.

    Ted Herman

Did they originate in their current location?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Ted Herman

    Matt Hatch

The Finns reside in a Parallel World, is that correct?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Matt Hatch

Okay, so are Parallel Worlds and Mirror Worlds the same thing?

    Robert Jordan

    No, they are different.

    Matt Hatch

Okay, well then do Parallel Worlds have their own reflections?

    Robert Jordan

    Possibly.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2005

    Question

Mr. Jordan, if you could, I would like to know who built the Tower of Ghenjei. If you can't tell us that, is there any kind of detail you can share without compromising the future?

    Robert Jordan

I am sorry this is a RAFO.

    Interview: Jun 10th, 2010

    Luckers

This is also from one of Brandon's hash outs with Matt from Theoryland. In it Brandon speaks of the nature of Parallel Worlds.

Brandon: Extrapolations of this question get us to: is there one Dragon for all different Parallels or are they all different Dragons? Traveling through the Portal Stone seems to indicate that there are many different lives Rand could have led. The same thing happens with several of the ter'angreal that people go through. The question then is, are those all separate universes? Do we have a multi-verse sort of concept? Or are they possibilities and do these worlds all exist or could exist, what is the difference. In some of those Rand failed. So, is Rand the Dragon in all of them or is Rand not the Dragon in some of them? What happens in the ones where Rand failed? Are they real worlds? Are those different worlds where there is a different Dark One who then takes over and destroys that world or maybe not, maybe he makes it has he wishes. Or are those just possibilities, reflections of this world that don't really exist except when we touch them? Those are all very good questions. Robert Jordan said that Tel'aran'rhiod is a reflection of all different worlds, which implies other worlds continue to exist. The World of the Finns is something different...

Matt: ...he called it a Parallel World...

Brandon: Yes, the Parallel World, that one and also the one Rand and Lanfear visited are persistent regardless of someone from this world visiting. Yet, many of those seem almost shadowy and reflections of the real world, some of them seem as real just strange when visiting them. What happens in these different world, that sort of thing, those were never questions that Robert Jordan answered...

Ok, my request for clarification is mainly concerned with that last paragraph—specifically it left me confused about whether Brandon is speaking about Parallel Worlds or Mirror Worlds. Brandon seems to lump both in together, describing some as shadowy, some as solid. Brandon describes the Finn world as THE Parallel World (we also know the Ogier world is a Parallel World), but in the same paragraph Brandon seems to define it as a persistent Mirror World of some form, and grants that same allocation to the world Rand and Lanfear visited in The Great Hunt.

    Maria Simons

Cut Brandon a break, here. I had to look it up to make sure that I had which one was which correct. The 'finn worlds are Parallel Worlds, the Ogier world is a Parallel World. The place that Lanfear, Rand, Loial and Hurin went to was a Mirror World, as were all of the ones in the Portal Stone incident.

    Luckers

[Sorry Brandon! I am an uber geek and get carried away and never meant to attack you! Mea culpa!]

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2011

    Question

Did the Eelfinn know Mat would be returning when they gave him the ashandarei and told him "Wise to take leavetaking, etc..."?

    Brandon Sanderson

They don't have perfect knowledge of the future (think Dreamers) but they knew it was a possibility. Also, they gave him the ashandarei in fulfillment of his request for leavetaking, but were hoping he would not realize that, and be trapped in their domain.

    Interview: Apr 17th, 2011

    Ted Herman

When the Eelfinn told Mat, 'Wise to ask for leavetaking, when you set no price' etc., did they know he would be back?

    Brandon Sanderson

The 'Finns do not have a perfect vision of the future, but are capable of reading some things about it, and so I would say it's likely they knew. They didn't know everything, though.

    Ted Herman

So, it's...to the best of their knowledge, they couldn't...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. They sincerely tried to kill him, but they knew there was a strong possibility he'd be back.

    Ted Herman

Did they know that his ashandarei was the answer to the leavetaking thing?

    Brandon Sanderson

They knew what they were giving him. They were hoping he wouldn't.

    Ted Herman

    Excellent. Thank you.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Question

How come Lan couldn’t tell that Moiraine was alive, and with the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn? Because he felt the severing of the bond?

    Brandon Sanderson

He did not have the bond any more. Since the bond was severed, he couldn't feel her any more.

    Question

But why would the bond be severed, she was still alive?

    Brandon Sanderson

RJ says it is because she went to another dimension, and when that slice happened, it cut the bond. The bond couldn't function across the dimension there without some sort of connection there, without some sort of opening portal or something like that.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Question

In book 6 or 7 when Moiraine gets thrown through the portal, was it RJ's plan to bring her back in Towers of Midnight?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, he actually wrote most of the scenes that take place in the Tower of Ghenjei and afterwards.
