An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

AR=OP !!!

Previous Categories: The Wheel of Time

Let picture it this way: the OP is a great ocean. Men draw on it in such a way that they pull off the surface, while women draw off the bottom. The backblast occurs, spitting the TP stuff onto the OP ocean. Only the men are affected because it floats on the surface. You can feel others channel depending on how close you are to feel them make ripples.

The OP Ocean is all around the channelers in the real world. Stedding are like islands, and the ocean is more and more corrupted around SG. Channelers draw on OP with their thought and anyone can control TAR with just their thought. So TAR _actually_ is the ocean of OP. When you enter TAR, you are a spirit floating in OP. You don't channel there but you think you do. It reflects the real world, because it is in the real world (covers the planet). You can do anything there because you have no physical world to affect (because we know that the dream angreals are spirit-based, TAR is spirit-based).

Angreals are shaped specifically because they use the language of dreams. Callandor is shaped like a weapon not to signify its use but because its function demands it. Elayne & co. figured out the dream angreals first since they are the simplest mechanisms- since channeling spirit is so close to just plain OP. Rand's gateways to TAR seem to go nowhere because they don't- TAR is laid neatly over the real world. The portals stones require spirit, as well. That's also why channelers are more often Dreamers and Foretellers.

Wolves and sniffers are connected to smells in TAR. Which is how they can smell things other don't and explains why the wolve's share the ability- they exist partly in TAR. This explains why wolves can sense channelers- they are partly feeling the TAR ocean. Min always sees viewings around Aes Sedai because they are connected to TAR more directly than most people.

When you die, you are nothing but spirit- nothing but raw OP. So you can roam around in TAR until the wheel channels you into real stuff- in the real world. OP powers the wheel in that sense. Gateways are needed to enter the spirit world without losing your soul- because your soul is naturally leached off into TAR when you die, it doesn't want to leave.

The pool at the eye of the world was saidin drawn from the OP and put into physical form. It can be purified once drawn, just like Rand removed the TP from the ocean of OP (which he knows as Saidin).

Men see saidin, women see saidar. Two perspectives of the same thing- which is how both can draw on the TP. TP is like a hose compared to an ocean- there is only one nozzle to operate, so male and female use it the same. There is no restriction on gender, because the DO does not conform to the patterns of the world.

I will admit that it was fun to read, but I think the biggest issue you have is with the "bottom" and "top" of the ocean thing. I would drop that, because it isn't integral to your theory. What you should have also mentioned was the "third constant." The DO, the Creator, and TAR are the three constants in all worlds, connecting all worlds, inside of or outside of all things. I wouldn't try to explain the TP the way you are doing it. The TP is not detectable by channelers. I don't see how you can try and connect it with the OP...so would the TP be the fourth constant...which is the problem with calling the OP the third constant. Finally, I don't agree. TAR is so much more than the OP, and serves different functions.

From what we have seen, only heros get to hang around in TAR when they die and await rebirth. TAR would be crammed full, instead of almost always empty, if this were the case.

RJ has said in interviews that pretty much everyone in WoT is reborn. We don't know for sure where they hang out- but I think it's TAR.

Although i dont support your theory i thought it was very interesting however i have to agree with the TAM i think TAR is much more then the OP as for the theory though pretty cool

RJ has said that there is another afterlife for regular people when they die, not Heroes.

i think youve got it right, but you have the ocean thing wrong. saidar would be on top, because the womenjust float into it, saidin would be on the bottom, because men have to reach in and grasp it.

heronblade: 2003-06-13

plus, if men were at the bottom then it would be more of a battle for them to control the powers because of the pressure

But if saidin is on the top it would explain why the taint "floats" on the surface of the OP when they try to access it.

I think what we are coming to is that this is not a good metaphor for the OP at all.

It would be a closer metaphor, I think, to compare saidar to a slow moving river, and saidin to a fast moving river. The Taint, then would be like the froth that floats on the rapids.

Bah. Even that's not a good metaphor. This is just a bad comparison.

solomonrex: 2003-06-18

My theory is not based on a metaphor. It's meant to literally describe what the channelers are accessing. After the last couple of books, when RJ has introduced the wells, it's occurred to me that RJ may be using actual laws of physics in his 'spiritual realm' of TAR and channelers. Fantasy books generally apply some rules in order to make the use of magic a little harder than dreaming. But I think RJ has created a whole logical system here. And we should have enough evidence to figure it out.

I know RJ has repeatedly described the OP has having two halves, Saiding and Saidar and the idea that it's simply a matter of drawing differently on the same source would seem to contradict that.

I've been thinking about RJ's quotes that our world is in the past or future of WoT. So I've thought of a simple way to get from here to there with only one change: introduce TAR. This doesn't explain the Ogier, but there's no way to explain a completely new species if RJ was thinking of our world. All I can think of is that the Bible refers to giants in the OT. But that's probably a mistranslation, anyway.

If the OP is the same ocean, then if a male "gives in" to saidin, wouldn;t he actually be channeling saidar? And how come woman can't channel when they "fight" saidar? And if it can be "purified" once drawn, and the "pure" form is all around the ppl, why can't they see it. Does that mean the OP when u draw it is not pure? Why would it be visible in one "pure" form and not another.
