An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

nfinite mind-soul-thread "realities", only one that can overcome the DO...

by the stone rocket: 2004-01-13 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Philosophy and the Wheel of Time

Perhaps the "pattern" itself is nothing more than an certain number of threads woven an (approximately)infinite number of times, such that Rand's (or, the Drangon's) "weave" of reality is the only one that doesn't snag, so to speak...so, each soul experiences a certain number of weaves over the turning of the ages and thus constructs a totality out of it -- but only one soul's "construct" will be perfected enough to finally "break on through", if you will, past the DO or, the tendency towards negation/oblivion/what-have-you (that soul being, of course, the Dragon's).

If this is true, then I guess Tel'aran'rhiod would be the sort of "lowest common denominator" level of reality, where the only things that subside are the things that we all agree on, or consider objects.
Hmmm... is it not said that domesticated animals do not appear in TAR? Could it be because we consider them to be "personalities" and not just objects? This would explain a lot. T'A'R could be thought of as a single "object" that can only tolerate a single subjective perception at one time -- thus the battle of wills that often finds one dreamer alter the whole scape, including the straights of any other people embedded in the dream at the time -- the others essentially become part of the object. Indubitably.

My only comment would be that T'A'R is not simply one dimensional, and its other dimensions don't seem to present the lowest common denominator. Mirror Worlds are found within the Unseen World, as is the Gap of Infinity where Egwene can see all of the dreams of all of the people in all worlds. Also, there is the skimming space, where you can travel or use to spy on people within the T'A'R proper space. And T'A'R is the third constant. It is the only thing, besides the Creator and DO, that exists everywhere, either around or within all worlds. So, I would suggest that T'A'R as it is described in the books, doesn't project the concept that it is the base level in your philosophical concept.

I thought that T'A'R didn't penetrate Rhuidean, and maybe not stedding either. Sorry I don't have a page number, but maybe someone else can back me up.

Seana (Aiel dreamwalker) states TSR that she cant reach Rhuidean from T'A'R.

"There are some places one cannot enter in Tel'aran'rhidd," Seana said. "Rhuidean. Ogier stedding. A few others. What happens there is shielded from a dreamwalker's eyes."

Also several other times during the series its mentioned that you can't reach the stedding or Rhuidean(before Rand/Asmodean fight) from T'A'R.

actually rhudien was unenterable cus it was shielded by a mystical fog. i bet you can enter it now in the dream anyways.

interesting little note tho. I have windows remembering my password and theoryland always says its wrong the first time... which is wierd cus its the exact same pw the second time

Yes, you most likely would have no problem entering Rhuidean from T'A'R now that the shield is down. Brings up an interesting question though: What would happen if you tried to go through the doorway there in T'A'R? Would you walk right through it with nothing happening? or go to the land of the Aelfin?

"If this is true, then I guess Tel'aran'rhiod would be the sort of "lowest common denominator" level of reality, where the only things that subside are the things that we all agree on, or consider objects."

Lowest denominator could be the layer of reality that is used as a source of prophecies, and TAR is connected to that layer. But the whole TAR, (even if not taking into account the other dimensions of the Unseen world)? If TAR is a lowest denominator of all the Ages with the same Age-number, so the Ages must repeat with ALL the smallest details of objects and with different personal events. But that is just the opposite: when an Age comes again, the details are different, but the major events are the same. And Why the lowest denominator of the Ages would so easily incorporate personal dreams and imagination? Isn't it very weird for it? So, Stone Rocket, no way it is TAR, it's more likely to be just what the prophecies uses. It's connected with TAR but isn't TAR.
