An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

wo lives, two times, two Dragons in another's head

by Flinn: 2003-04-17 | 3 out of 10 (4 votes)

Previous Categories: Who is the other person in Rand's head?

Here's something that is pretty way out there, but I've thought about it more than once

1. The Wheel of Time is a WHEEL, circular, neither beginning nor end. At the beginning of the books it says **an Age yet to come, an Age long past**. Also, see Herid Fel's discussion with Rand.

2. More than once during LTT's ramblings he stops after Rand yells at him and asks if Rand is really there, etc. Could it be that when he recedes into Rand's head, he is going back to his reality and time?

3. Rand and LTT are tied the the same places, people, events and soul. Rand is the reincarnation of LTT, so, in the AoL, couldn't the Third Age (Randland)be in the the past as well as the future (see 1).

4. Part of this theory is that Rand is in LTT's head in the AoL. This goes along that the past is the future, and the future is the past. It seems to me that if LTT is in Rand's head, and he's from the past, then Rand would also be in Lews Therin's head, as he's from the 3rd Age, which, if I'm right, is also in the past.

The only problem I have with this idea is not mixing it with the taint. LTT, as far as we know, before the taint, was a sane guy not given over to having discussions with himself in his head causing general questions if he was mad or not by the public. He didn't know of war, as Ishy said, and such. Would Rand have "rambled like a mad man" in his head or just been a rational second voice? And are there only two times that the Pattern uses this soul throughout time? And if in the future, how about the guy in two futures from now? It isn't until after the taint that LTT goes mad...did he hear Rand's voice after the taint...well, we don't really know...he speaks madly of Ilyena but not Elayne, Aviendha, or Min...so I just don't think it works.

The Ages are sperate parts of the wheel and they are all indivdual every time they are made. I find it hard to believe that the AoL can be going on at the same time that the 3rd Age is going on so that Rand can talk to LTT and be in LTTs head while LTT is in Rands head. Doesnt work for me.

AND LTT talks about how he killed all his homies. if he was in his time, he wouldnt know that yet...right? maybe the guy that rand can almost see is the dragon from the future. maybe LTT could barely see rand back in the day. Or better yet, maybe LTT's voice in Rand's head is just a psychological justification for knowing things that he shouldn't. Maybe he couldn't handle at the time remembering things from a different life and so created this other voice in his head to tell him crap. Its like he bottled the LTT section of his soul up and it now can only leak out. Also, i think that third person he can almost recognize is the merged version of him and LTT. Am i crazy?

and all in the defense of cows.

I always thought that it must be the ist age dragon - if Rand is going to live in anyone's head it's more likely to be in the 4th age. This obviously relies on the premise that there is a dragon each age - I think this has been examined elsewhere

Let's not forget that LTT is aware of things in Randland too. He's aware of others in the room with Rand. Wanting to kill Ashaman and even admiring pretty women. There's no indication that Rand can do the same thing, and it definitly would have come up. Rand wouldn't have to wonder if LTT is real or not.

I believe LTT is there simply to teach Rand since there's no one else to do it. It's just he patterns way of letting Rand tap into LTT old memories.

I don't see enough evidence to support this theory in the books and plenty, mentioned here by others, to oppose it.

My contribution is about the Wheel - there's no reason that each Age has to be identical, and many for them to not be. While the Wheel does turn, and Ages come and go, and all that rot, extend the analogy a bit with me...

The wheels on your car (or other vehicle of choice) turn, but the ground under them is constantly changing - the constant revolution about a fixed point leads to forward progress in a definite direction.

While the Ages all have the same pattern (no hint of DO, DO 'unleashed', DO mostly locked up, DO sealed completely), the specific people and actions are different each time.

This view of changes in the Ages is supported by Ishamael (admittedly, a poor witness) when he claims that the Dragon has served the DO in Ages past... when clearly LTT did _not_ serve the DO, making two distinct variations in one swell foop.

LTT is too clearly aware of the end of his life, and also too clearly aware of Rand's surroundings, to be in both places at the same time.

LTT knows that he should be dead, and is surprised by the fact that he exists in the World. This points to the fact that he can't be connected to Rand in his life. Do you suppose it possible that he's suspended in stasis somehow inside Dragonmount?

To argue the Pscyological reflex

The I should be dead thinng is rand's thoughts seeping through, that LTT should be dead.

But I think that it is the Wheel compensating for no male Aes Sedia.

Thus the voice is LTT. If the first age had a dragon:

The third voice is the 1st age dragon

If not:

Guire Amalanson.
