he Title of Crossroads of Twilight

by DragonsShield: 2004-07-20 | 5 out of 10 (2 votes)

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

I recently read an essay analyzing the Titles of Robert Jordan's Books and what they meen in the book, in this essay it says that it meens there is a major decision comig which i don't see much in the book except Egwene deciding when to attack the Tower. It very well may be that but i think it has to do with the Dark Hunt. I remember reading about the Wild Hunt of Darkhounds led by the DO. In the description it says that the most dangerous time to see the hunt is at an intersection or crossroads right before sundown or sunrise most of the time seeing the Hunt meens death to the viewer. Knowing this I think that the title Crossroads of Twilight means that there is great danger to come to a main Character. As great a danger as seeing the Wild Hunt at twilight at a crossroads.

Well, considering that we see the trail of a huge number of Darkhounds in Crossroads of Twilight, your analysis is sound. As for danger to a main character: all three ta'veren have been confronted with something very dangerous, that may or may not pan out in Knife of Dreams.

**Knowing this I think that the title Crossroads of Twilight means that there is great danger to come to a main Character.**

No, not a main character; more like ALL main characters. The majority of the book was to do one thing: bring everything to a climax, but only just before it. The only plot thread that exceeded this, was Egwene's turning of the chain. Everything else, is at a high point, a crossroads if you will, a point of no return (if there ever has been).

might have something to do with the word "twilight" being used a lot, especially in the prologue and the last chapters. and, I believe, a lot of crossing of paths. both metaphorically and literallly. a lot of possible choices for everyone and they all need to be made in the face of danger (hence the twilight part) and all of them might be the wrong ones. (hence the crossroads part)

plus, I think it might have something to do with the Darkhounds lurking around Perrins camp. and elsewhere, obviously, since they don't seem to be following Perrin around like faithful doggies... makes me wonder where'd they go

As the motto quote at the heading of CoT is speaking about Darkhounds, the Darkhounds meaning of the title is obvious. And since the role of the Darkhounds pack in the book is too small, the main meaning must be symbolic. The danger, right. There's of course no special danger visible yet in the book, not such that would be different from the other books. So what is the meaning.

My guess is that the heading has to reflect the phase of the main storyline of the series. Close to the end of series as RJ said. The meaning would be so: the main characters are already in the situation that makes them most succeptible to the ultimate danger. But the danger is not yet coming to them. But it is already on way. THe houds ride already but haven't yet reached their target. But the target is already on the crossroad at tweelight. Both crossroads and tweelight are mentioned, so all the different conditions of danger are fulfilled.

The darkhound idea is sound, but I also think that it refers to the ghosts: When we have seen them in COT it has been at a crossroads, and at twilight. So Habor was a crossroads (of two trading roads, I think).

I don't remember the rest of them now.

I know it sounds insignificant next to Darkhounds etc, and it hasn't been mentioned because it is blatantly obvious, but I think that it is important to point out twilight as a time before darkness. I think that there is always a chance that the DO can cahange the weather again, possibly bringing darkness o the world. Those holding the Bowl of the Winds can right it again, but by the time they have done this, the damage could already be don- e.g. someone important dying as a result of hypothetically "seeing Darkhounds at the crossroads"

RJ stated in an interview that he doesnt give a title to the books usually until he is finished or nearly so..and that he always intends to have the books be longer than they are...but once he has them written down...realizes his intentions are a little far fetched. And RJ..for the most part..has ever scene in his head minus the minor details...if the title was refering to the darkhounds...he probably would have come up with the title b4 writing the book..but since he didn't...since he waited to give it a title until he was finished writing...after realizing exactly what he could fit into the book..it most likely has to do with the major plot lines that were brought to a climax but not yet resolved...didn't have enough pages to tie up the plot lines...thus titling the book as it is. If he managed to finish most of the lines..he probably would have named it something else...as to what...only RJ knows..and then again..even he most likely doesn't..for he decided on this one

To this means that there has been a lot left to be resolved. That everything is hanging in the balance. Because everything is left on a cliffhanger.

I believe that the name means that the characters are at a turning point (crossroads) and twighlight means that it's all nearing an end
