oal is Asmodean

by TJ Robbins: 2001-07-08 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Who is Noal and why is he in Ebou Dar?

While rereading The World of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, I came across something interesting. In the section dedicated to Asmodean, it says he is from a place called Shorelle. In Winter's Heart, Noal tells a story about being to a place called Shorelle where there are giants with faces on their bellies. Also you will remember that Asmodean is a great composer. Well, if you remember when he told the soldiers from the Band that were staying in the Tarasin Palace, the story about Mat fighting the gholam, he told a very elaborate story with "elaborate gestures". In the same paragraph it says "the man was a natural storyteller, as gook as a gleeman". Now remember that Asmodean posed as a gleeman in the Waste called Jasen Natel. Please post a reply and let me know what you think, but I'm pretty sure that we've found another reborn Forsaken.

Okay, you bring up some good evidence. If this was the same guy in front of Carridins, then Asmodean's soul was placed in his body...but do we know if Asmodean was ever good with a knife? As far as I know he was a composer...although, you could make the case that he knew what the gholam was, and that it was a setup scene to get Asmodean in with Mat...and shame on us if it is because RJ would be using the composing thing twice for him...wouldn't that be crazy. Although I am still partial to Farstrider, this does make a sensible second option.

After reviewing this theory, your first assumption is incorrect. It sounded good, but Noal speaks of a place called Shibouya, and Jasin talks of Shorelle. That would have been a great piece of evidence, but now your idea seems very unlikely.

Noal Charin is Jain Charin, aka Jain Farstrider.

asmodean was a composer of music, not stories. this also makes your theory seem doubtful.

Well the theory is good... Too bad that the main piece of evidence was incorrect. Oh well, I liked it!

Would have been cool if it was at all possible. But not only is your evidence incorrect, why would the DO bring a known traitor back into the fold?

This is much more to my liking. As I said in the other post about noal. I never liked him being fastrider, and thought he has the man-in-the-barrel -- who I believe is a darkfriend. Him being Asmodean makes a lot more sense than fastrider. Unless fastrider is a darkifriend, that is.

Ok, given the rise of Farstrider theories that are being replied to, I decided to kill this one because it is just impossible.

1. Asmodean does mention Shorelle as his how town -- but that's the only mention of Shorelle in the entire series. Noal tells of this:

**TITLE: Winter's Heart, CHAPTER: 28 - News in a Cloth Sack

"I'm planning to take the weight off my leg," Mat said as casually as he could. Noal seemed harmless enough. According to Harnan, he told stories before going to sleep, stories that Harnan and the other Redarms seemed to swallow whole, even the one about some place called Shibouya, supposedly beyond the Aiel Waste, where women who could channel had tattooed faces, over three hundred crimes carried a penalty of death, and giants lived under the mountains, men taller than Ogier, with their faces on their bellies. He claimed to have been there. No one who made claims like that could be anything but harmless. On the other hand, the one time Mat had seen him handle those long daggers he carried under his coat, he had looked far from harmless. There was a way a man had of touching a weapon that said he was accustomed to using it. "If I decide to plan anything else, I'll keep you in mind."**

2. Yes, Noal tells stories with elaborate gestures and is a natural story-teller -- but he's also a humble story-teller, because he down plays his own part in saving Mat's life going so far as to make himself seem like a buffoon. Asmodean did nothing but try to further his own image, just like any of the Forsaken.

3. RJ has said quite frankly that Asmodean is dead and not returning -- ever. Him and Sammael, and Rahvin, and Be'lal all have something in common: they ain't coming back.

Noal is not Asmodean.
