I've been wondering. Legends are usually based on fact, right? I believe our "dragon! " stories come from dinosaurs - if you don't belive that they were around when people were, get a Bible and read the part in Job about the Leviathan. Or the accounts of the 14th century French town that killed a "dragon", one that looked just like a Triceratops.
So in the WoT, were did the Dragons come from? In the special prolouge for TEotW, Tam al'Thor says, in response to Perrin's question:

"Perrin scratched at his head. "Master al'Thor," he said slowly, "what does 'the Dragon' mean? If somebody's called the Lion, it means he's supposed to be like a lion. But what's a dragon?" Egwene stared at him. She had never thought of that. Maybe Perrin was not as slow as he appeared." "I don't know," Rand's father answered simply. "I don't think anyone does. Maybe not even the Aes Sedai." He let the sheep go that he had been shearing, and motioned for another to be brought. Egwene realized that he had been done with it for some time. He must not have wanted to interrupt his story. Master Cole opened his eyes and grinned. "The Dragon. It surely sounds fierce, though, now doesn't it?" he said before letting his eyes drift shut again.

There has to be something to base this on, and I think Dragons still live - real live deadly ones. Either under the sea or in Shara's neighboring continent.

A good question would be for RJ, do memories of things that occur in a previous turning remain in a new turning (are things from a Seventh Age remembered in the following First Age?)? If not, then either the Dragons are just some name, or they possibly existed (like the Dinosaurs.) And I guess it is plausible that they still exist, like the To'Raken, in some other part of the world.

Actually RJ has said that there are no real dragons. He said something along the lines of that when LTT came to power they gave the fiercest thing ever or something like that. But there arent any living now, thats certain.

Well I don't know about there still being dragons it would just throw a lot of the realisim with magic out the window. But maybe the dragons were somehting remembered from when ogres and trolls and elves had thier time in the wheel a couple a Patterns ago when human were just another race. so maybe dragons were there too and thats why dragons are remembered.

This is strictly based on what we have seen and heard but if i am correct i believe that the dragons described are of the oriental folk lore rather then the european folk lore they are more serpant like perhaps a further inquiry into the oriental folk lore of dragons may shed more light on this idea

I believe that it is as Korell said, that the dragons are from Oriental folklore... As I'm sure you've all noticed, a lot of RJ's names come from variations on Eastern languages, so it stands to reason that some of the legends in the book are based on Eastern legends and folklore.
