I know what he isn't. He can't be Artur cause they were both present wen mat sounded the horn and he can't be Gaidal Cain because Birgitte said that Cain was ugly and that she always hated him when she first saw him, and thing like comments from Lanfear when he is sick in bed in Tar Valon "You'll be alright, once you fill out a bit" and that Queen,well,uh...pretty much raping him - her son describes Mat as "her pretty" imply he is not ugly. Sorry, shoulda put a few fullstops in there... Also when he and Birgette meet up they tease each other and play around and stuff, not hatred. Olver, now he's your Gaidal Cain. He's ugly isn't he? What other reason could he be in the book?

I agree, not Artur or Gaidal, that would be to much of a paradox for me to handle, plus you bring up some good points.
