    Interview: Jan 25th, 2005

    Week 15 Question

At the risk of being RAFO'd: Mesaana was punished for ignoring her orders to go to stop Rand from cleansing saidin. Was Semirhage also punished for ignoring orders, or did she have special exemption? (If you're going to RAFO us, consider giving us some other little tidbit instead?)

    Robert Jordan

Semirhage was present at Shadar Logoth, though not seen. You didn't see Graendal, either, though admittedly Moghedien thought of her, thinking it would be good if she or Cyndane died. If I always tried to show everyone who was present at a battle or the like, the books would be a LOT longer than they are now. And those battles would get rather boring, a list of names. Go down the checklist and make sure everyone gets mentioned. Boring. Anyway, Mesaana was the only one who tried to sit it out. By the way, Moridin also was not present, for reasons that will become self-evident as you read on.

By the by, Rand and his companions very likely would have been killed or captured if the Forsaken were not who they are, if they had been willing to form links and coordinate their attacks. But they suffer from a combination of arrogance toward the "ignorant peasants" of the current Age and distrust of one another. Forming a link is all very well, but who leads? Which of them would be willing to give up control over their own ability and put it completely under the control of another of them? Who are you willing to let get behind your back in a fight? Moghedien? Semirhage? I didn't think so.

    Footnote

We did see Graendal at the Cleansing, actually; Verin's group encountered her. As for the 'self-evident' reasons why Moridin was not there, it likely has to do with the sickness caused by his link with Rand (we saw in Knife of Dreams that Moridin also suffers from it). Short of that, it almost surely has something to do with the link between them.

    Brandon Sanderson (17 November 2009)

Re: Mesaana. People have been misquoting me a lot on this one. Early in the tour someone claimed to have a quote where RJ said...

    Brandon Sanderson

...that her alter ego hadn't been seen. This shocked me, since I thought she had been. I have been waiting until I got home to check it out.

    Brandon Sanderson

The only thing official I have said is that someone claimed RJ said on the Knife of Dreams tour that she hadn't been seen, and can say nothing until...

    Brandon Sanderson

...I am off tour and can research old RJ interviews to find if I've missed something. I think it likely the person was mixed up.

    Brandon Sanderson

(later) Word from Maria: RJ said we HAVE seen Mesaana's alter ego on screen.

    Brandon Sanderson

That's good. The guy from DC had me worried. I thought I'd known from the notes exactly who Mesaana was, and that she has been on screen...

    Footnote

Robert Mee, the guy who provided the original quote from RJ confirming that Mesaana had been on screen, told me in an email that he might have been the one to cause all of this confusion since he misremembered the quote when he talked to Brandon. He's probably right, as he saw Brandon in Bailey's Crossroads on Nov. 4, and the confusion first showed up a few days later. He sends along his apologies to everyone!

    Interview: 2010

    Terez (30 July 2010)

Does Min's comment to Corele mean that the Dark One can subvert her viewings BEFORE the Pattern is destroyed?

    Terez

Asked in reference to the viewing that Elza would serve Rand. Or did it simply not imply she would serve forever?

    Brandon Sanderson (30 July 2010)

Elza did serve Rand, in her own way. It did not mean forever. That was not a subverting of the viewing. (Or wasn't meant to be.)

    Terez

Thanks! That's what I thought but some will still say you didn't answer the original question lol. It's Theoryland.

    Brandon Sanderson

Robert Jordan taught me to give Aes Sedai answers.

    Terez

    Fair enough. :)

    Terez

There is one case in which I suspect that RJ gave an Aes Sedai answer and the reporter may not have gotten it exactly.

    Terez

Q: Was Else always Lanfear? RJ: No. Else did exist as a separate human but was played by Lanfear after Else was expelled.

    Terez

Strange, because of the personality 'Else' showed, and the Tear trap being Mesaana's trap, not Lanfear's. Any comment?

    Brandon Sanderson

    MAFO.

    Maria Simons

(later) I cannot find anything to clarify the question.

    Terez

PS, thanks for taking time to do Q&A here. Far superior to tour reports, since the Aes Sedai answers are direct from you. ;)

    Terez

...not to mention the quick responses, and the fact that you have more time to think the answers out. You are awesome!

    Terez

By the way, not knocking the tour reporters. They rock; we have a lot of good stuff because of them.

    Terez

I am just reminded of Tam. 'Tell me what she said. Her exact words, mind, just as she said them.' And Thom too. :)

    Brandon Sanderson

Sure. Of course, I'm not convinced half of Theoryland hasn't joined Twitter only to follow/question me...

    Brandon Sanderson

When I'm on tour, do be aware that I don't have notes handy and I'm usually very tired. All answers are suspect.

    Terez

As for stalking you...someone has to do it to keep the Q&A organized, and I elected myself (also before you came along).

    Brandon Sanderson

Ha. Just seems that I get a surprising number of tweets from people with no profile picture, and who are only following me. :)

    Brandon Sanderson

I don't feel stalked at all. This is how I use Twitter, and I'm happy to answer questions.

    Matt Hatch

No profile pics and only following you? That sounds like my twenty other Twitter accounts...

    Footnote

Min and Cadsuane told Corele that she sees pieces of the Pattern, but if the Dark One destroys the Pattern as he aims to do, then her viewings will be irrelevant. Those that are in reference to things after the Last Battle will only come to pass if they prevent the Dark One from destroying the Pattern. Some took this to mean that Shaidar Haran (essentially, the Dark One) subverted Min's viewing that Elza would serve Rand when he ordered Elza to help Semirhage torture and control Rand.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

    Was Else always Lanfear?

    Robert Jordan

No. Else did exist as a separate human but was played by Lanfear after Else was expelled.

    FOOTNOTE—TEREZ

Since Lanfear as Else doesn't make much sense to me (Mesaana seeming more likely for a few reasons, not least that the 'trap' was supposedly all her plan, and personality), I asked Erica if maybe RJ didn't actually say exactly that. (Sometimes fan assumptions work their way into the wording, if no alternative is being considered.) Unfortunately, I asked her 17 years after she made the report, so she couldn't remember, but she did say it wasn't her phrasing (indicating that she apparently just wrote down what was said).

    Interview: May, 2001

    Ruhira Sedai

We know who almost all the Forsaken are, except maybe Mesaana and Demandred. Should we be able to work out who they are?

    Robert Jordan

    Ummm...Yeah.

    SORILEA

Eeks...I hate those answers. Okay everyone...you heard him...time to get those books cracked open again, and let's figure out who they are!!!

    Interview: Apr 6th, 2001

    Lupis

Question: We haven't seen much about Mesaana and Semirhage. I assume they're going to feature somewhere in the future books?

    Robert Jordan

Yes, Mesaana and Semirhage will feature in future books. There are reasons they have been lying low.

    Interview: Jan 16th, 2003

    Matthew Julius

Right before I get my book signed, a group of people clustered near the table asked if they can ask a question...

"How long was Danelle a novice before becoming Aes Sedai?" Or something. Obviously a RAFO, which it was. Those folks seemed to be taking notes, so maybe they'll post something here also. Dunno, maybe that was Michael's group.

    FOOTNOTE—TEREZ

It was indeed Michael's group; here is his account of the question.

    MATTHEW JULIUS

    Which led to my question...

Length of time Danelle spent as novice/Accepted?

    Interview: Jan 18th, 2003

    Question

    Who is Messana?

    Robert Jordan

Who is Mesaana? Think! You have enough evidence to know that by now, I would suspect, and you certainly will have enough after reading Crossroads of Twilight.

    Interview: Jan 18th, 2003

    Robert Jordan

There are many clues as to Mesaana's identity, enough that we should figure it out before Crossroads of Twilight. He basically said that he'd full-out reveal her in upcoming books, though, "...and if you still don't know, well, you'll find out later."

    Interview: Jan 23rd, 2003

    Robert Jordan

I asked if we had actually seen Mesaana's alter ego in the White Tower and he answered "Yes." I think he was waiting for me to say "Who?" so he could respond "RAFO"..... but I didn't. Granted, it's not much, but it's a bit of evidence that Mesaana is not some random Aes Sedai in the Tower... we have seen her.

    Interview: Oct 13th, 2005

    Mashiaramanda

Lastly, I asked (which is the question I asked last year, but all I got was a RAFO) if he could throw us a bone as to where to look for clues to who Mesaana is in the Tower.

    Robert Jordan

He did not, in fact, throw me a bone.

    Interview: Oct 13th, 2005

    Question

Mesaana: Do we have enough clues to know her identity?

    Robert Jordan

I think so, but I'm not absolutely sure. Her Third Age role has been at least mentioned.

    Interview: Nov 7th, 2009

    Question

Has Mesaana's alter ego been seen yet "on stage"? [I suspect the fan that asked this is one of the Blues I mentioned earlier, though she may be a Brown, too.]

    Brandon Sanderson

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to RAFO [read and find out] that." Any yes/no would set all the fans, especially on the message boards and fans into figuring it out by process of elimination. The crowd pressed him for hints, and he did confirm that she is still in the White Tower. This statement was met with speculative "oohhh"'s and pensive looks as new theories were born then and there.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2009

    Question

Is Mesaana still in the Tower?

    Brandon Sanderson

Egwene makes some deductions about this at the end of the book. Egwene is not incorrect.

    Question

She could swear that she's not a Darkfriend on the Oath Rod, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

As long as she believed it to be true. Every remaining Aes Sedai in the Tower has retaken the Three Oaths. You should be thinking about ways to defeat the Oath Rod. There is a way to do it.

    Interview: Nov 17th, 2009

    Question

Do the Forsaken consider themselves Darkfriends?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oooh, you are tricky! I know what you're doing. I would say that, in general, yes they do consider themselves Darkfriends, though there are ways somebody would be able to get around that. I would say, yes, that that is not the sort of mental gymnastics that...it is very easy to convince yourself that you are not a Darkfriend.

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2009

    Question

Someone asked for clarification about whether we had seen Mesaana and Demandred's alter-egos on screen.

    Brandon Sanderson

Sanderson said that we had seen Mesaana's alter-ego on screen as of Knife of Dreams, but that we had not seen Demandred's alter-ego on screen as of Knife of Dreams. Sanderson would not elaborate on whether Demandred's alter-ego had been seen in The Gathering Storm—Sanderson didn't want to narrow down the suspects for us if Demandred really had appeared in The Gathering Storm.

    Interview: Nov 16th, 2009

    Question

How does Nynaeve compare with Semirhage in One Power strength?

    Brandon Sanderson

I'm pretty sure she's stronger, but they are very close. RJ has a list of all the channelers' strengths. On that list, only six people are stronger than Nynaeve. It's such a rare event that pretty much anytime we meet someone stronger than her, it's explicitly said. There are two One Power strength scales—an 'old' and a 'new'. Nynaeve was the top of the female list for the 'old' list. Six are stronger on the 'new' list.

Brandon was pretty certain that Nynaeve is stronger than Mesaana, who isn't particularly strong in Forsaken terms.

Brandon was very open and willing to talk about this issue—people who care about these things should ask at every opportunity.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2010

    Ted Herman

How in the world did Lanfear survive that gigantic explosion that was depicted in the ter'angreal?

    Terez

[I don't remember what she said! WSB? I think Tam was talking to me about something, but I seem to remember that question getting fielded to the floor.]

    Ted Herman

Maria didn't even say RAFO. That was put out for discussion, which I am fine with. Some thought she wasn't physically there, or used the shield weave that Rand used in The Path of Daggers.

    Matt Hatch

Is Lanfear the only surviving person that is aware of how the Bore was created?

    Maria Simons

I don't know. Mesaana or Demandred might know.

    Interview: Nov 7th, 2010

    RDDK

I asked Brandon how, now that Mesaana is braindead and all, she got around the Oath Rod.

    Brandon Sanderson

He told me that one of the three ways the Aes Sedai had surmised was correct. Considering it probably would have been mentioned if they found an Oath Rod among her things, that it probably was the weave the investigators had rediscovered.

    Interview: Dec, 2010

    Dawn

I thought of one more question I had. The revelation of who Mesaana was impersonating inside of the White Tower—was that something that RJ had dictated in his notes/outlines, or was that of your own creation?

    Brandon Sanderson

That was directly from the notes. It was the person who most people had guessed it was, because of the foreshadowing that Robert Jordan put in.

    Interview: Jan 10th, 2011

    Andrew B ()

In Towers of Midnight's glossary, it is noted that Mesaana is destroyed (as opposed to Asmodean and Aran'gar who are noted to have been killed). If the Aes Sedai were to execute Mesaana, would the Dark One be able to put Mesaana's soul in another body? Or since her mind was destroyed, is Mesaana's soul permanently damaged?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

Nobody's soul gets permanently damaged in that way in the Wheel of Time. Whether the Dark One can recover her and transmigrate her soul or not is a RAFO.

    Interview: Apr 17th, 2011

    Terez

Will we learn about the information exchange between Graendal and Mesaana?

    Brandon Sanderson

Considering what's happened to Mesaana, I’m going to say that’s unlikely. No, that depends on what you mean by 'learn of'. If you wiggle it out of us, then perhaps some day.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

How did Egwene easily break free from the a'dam placed upon her in Tel'aran'rhiod by Mesaana when the a'dam placed upon Moghedien (a mistress of Tel'aran'rhiod) was so effective?

    Brandon Sanderson

This got Brandon thinking hard but he RAFO'd it in the end but he did say 'are you a Theorylander?' which did make us laugh. :)

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2011

    LordJuss

In Towers of Midnight in Egwene’s confrontation with Mesaana, how was Egwene able to override the a’dam when Moghedien had so spectacularly failed to do so earlier?

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon accused me of being a Theorylander then thought for a bit. He explained that, while the answer might not give anything away, he was loath to go into detail in case it could be used to work out other things yet to come. So, regretfully, he gave it a RAFO.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Claire

    Is Laras Mesaana?

    Brandon Sanderson

RJ once stated that Mesaana had not been seen on screen in her assumed identity yet as of the end of Knife of Dreams. And we see Laras in New Spring.

    Muirenn and Az

But is the Laras in New Spring the same as the Laras we see now?

    Brandon Sanderson

    *laughs* RAFO.

    Footnote

This was directly contradicted by earlier reports on RJ signings, and Brandon cleared it up later: Mesaana's alter ego had been seen 'on screen', and her identity was revealed in Towers of Midnight.

    Interview: Dec 17th, 2011

    Loialson

In Towers of Midnight it was mentioned that Mesaana had traded Graendal an angreal in exchange for information. Did Mesaana put that information to use yet?

    Brandon Sanderson

I believe that she...she did what she could with it. It wasn't as useful to her as she had hoped it would be. I mean, I wanna give you more, because Mesaana's basically out of the picture at this point....

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Luckers

Okay, so the warding on the Great Holding in Tear... it’s just, Moiraine, Mat, Rand, the Wonder Girls, all come and go with ease, yet Mesaana speaks of there being a nasty warding that stopped her getting in, and there is no sign that Be’lal... I mean, why wouldn’t Be’lal have taken the fat man angreal?

    Brandon Sanderson

*nodding before I finished* MAFO. That was something I was going to look into myself, because it stumped me during my last re-read. I never got round to it... you haven’t seen the size of the pile of notes, they are huge, and most of my time... I have to give over to things that are involved in what I’m working on. Sometimes though, I do just go into them purely for fan interest.

    Luckers

I would love to have an afternoon alone with the notes. *another fan nods fervently*

    Maria Simons

It is my understanding that Rand put that warding on when he was getting ready to leave Tear. As for Be’lal . . . well, he was one of the Chosen; what need had he of an angreal to go up against an untrained sheepherder? That’s my best guess, anyway.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson

Regarding Mesaana's alter ego: Brandon said that he had been sent a reliable quote from a Jordan interview that she wasn't anyone we had seen 'on screen' as of Knife of Dreams (? he may have said Crossroads of Twilight? I need to find the quote). Specifically, he said that Laras has been around since New Spring. And would not say if Mesaana was 'on screen' as her alter ego in The Gathering Storm, because he doesn't want to limit good discussion.

    Footnote

Brandon clarified this later; a fan had led him astray.

    Interview: Nov 10th, 2009

    Laurel4Amyrlin

I asked Brandon about Mesaana, and if we'd seen her Aes Sedai alter ego on stage yet.

    Brandon Sanderson

His answer was two-part: per RJ, we hadn't seen her on stage prior to Knife of Dreams, but he wouldn't confirm or deny her appearance since then—that was RAFO-ed.

He did, however, tell me that she WAS still in the White Tower at the end of The Gathering Storm.

    Laurel4Amyrlin

SO. There's a little tidbit of info for you to chew on. I want to hear some theories! :)

    Interview: Apr 24th, 2010

    Maria Simons

Even if she had been Amyrlin during a time when the possible End Time was not on its way, Elaida would not have been good in the position. Also, simply the fact that the Forsaken played a role in putting her there should say tons about her potential for the job.
